Posted January 26, 201411 yr This poll is prompted by this abuse of 'artist-featuring' : Feelin' Myself (feat. Miley Cyrus, French Montana, Wiz Khalifa & DJ Mustard) - will.i.am IMO this is far too many names included, several of whom make minimal contribution, leading many to being credited with hits they don't deserve. I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to contribute - just that they shouldn't be listed as featured artists, below a certain level of contribution.
January 26, 201411 yr In that case all of them made a decent contribution (Miley, French and Wiz did a rap, and DJ Mustard produced the song) so I say they deserve a credit.
January 26, 201411 yr I'd say 2 is probably enough, any more than that just becomes too much of a mouthful!!
January 26, 201411 yr I'm not in favour of producers being given a featured credit on someone else's song
January 26, 201411 yr I think 1 to be honest. I get very fed up to see one hundred names featured and yet I couldn't tell you what each one contributed. I yearn for the days where collaborations were exciting because they didn't happen very often.
January 26, 201411 yr More the better. Love seeing lots f artist on one song, but not when there is an 'and' or a 'versus' for some and 'ft' for others. Made up example- Miley Cyrus vs Bob Marley + Johnny Depp ft Lana Del Rey + Ryan Lewis vs Tom Jones ft Alan Hansen w/ John Newman.
January 26, 201411 yr I'd say make as many credits as you want but for chart purposes OCC should count only the first feature.
January 26, 201411 yr I probably say 2 artists is enough, as I find it annoying to fit the Artists and the track on one line for my database.
January 26, 201411 yr I really don't think it matters. Have as many or as little as you want. Not sure why any should be discredited by the OCC either?
January 26, 201411 yr Author I probably say 2 artists is enough, as I find it annoying to fit the Artists and the track on one line for my database. That's the main reason I object to multiple featured artists too. :) If there's more than 2 artists to a song I just name the first two, then put etc.
January 26, 201411 yr I think lead artist should only be credited..Rihanna has tons of features..and when u include her own singles and features she has sold more records than Madonna..it doesn't really seem fair or right to count them as her own singles
January 26, 201411 yr I think lead artist should only be credited..Rihanna has tons of features..and when u include her own singles and features she has sold more records than Madonna..it doesn't really seem fair or right to count them as her own singles It's totally fair IMO, Rihanna made a contribution to these tracks and it's only right that she's credited for it, regardless of whether she's sold more records than Madonna or not.
January 26, 201411 yr Imagine if every artist that contributed to 'All Of The Lights' by Kanyé West got a feature. Kanyé West feat. Rihanna, Drake, Kid Cudi, Nicki Minaj* (?), Tony Williams, The Dream, Charlie Wilson, John Legend, Elly Jackson (of La Roux), Alicia Keys, Elton John, Fergie... * - I don't know if she actually features but there is a female rap in the version I have that sounds a lot like her. I kind of think the OCC should list two maximum, even if there are more.
January 26, 201411 yr The Complete Book Of The British Charts (a reference book published around the start of the millennium) had a policy whereby if there was only 1 guest artist credited, the track would be listed in the histories of both the main and guest artists, but if there was more than 1 guest artist, then only the main artist would get the hit.
January 26, 201411 yr Author Imagine if every artist that contributed to 'All Of The Lights' by Kanyé West got a feature. Or Band Aid!
January 26, 201411 yr Or Band Aid! That's a point actually, I think that if a song features so many artists there should be a cut off point where they just stop listing the artists and just call them Various Artists or something similar (Perfect Day, anyone?) I think the problem nowadays is that artists would have been listed on the sleeve of the single 15 years ago but in the digital age there is no equivalent for this so artists need to be listed just to get recognition for their contribution.
January 26, 201411 yr Why *shouldn't* featured artists get the recognition though? They contribute to the song so it's only fair that they get credited, no? 'Various Artists' is hardly gonna be that good on a will.i.am track. Various Artists - Feelin' Myself. Not quite the same as will.i.am featuring some well known names like Miley and Wiz Khalifa. It's the big names that get some more interest for the track. Like with this new Busta Rhymes track, I'm not entirely sure why/how it's blown up but surely Kanye and Lil Wayne's names are enough to get some of their own fans interested. Q-Tip isn't quite as big a name.
January 26, 201411 yr There are also loads of contributions that are uncredited though. Let's just put the whole list of authors to the credits and make everyone happy then.
