ugh iggy is so contrived, attempting to be an older black male when you are from the outback of australia and 23 doesn't translate well. also, yeah, the 'clueless' themed video was great but when you have a hit don't use that as your moodboard to offset everything else.

Eh ?

I do agree that she's inherently contrived though - not that that's in any way off-putting for me as I like a lot of her music.

well if you highlight every other word you come out with a different sentence altogether

NATIONAL JELLY KINDNESS

(without facetiousness she reminds me of a middle aged rapper in terms of mannerisms and the way she expresses and projects herself though that probably comes down to her inspirations etc idk etc)

Be who you WANT to be, and ALL that.

I don't understand how her being 23 or from Australia has anything to do with being contrived? I mean sure, you can assume that. But, woudn't that be the same as saying anyone who acts outside of a said stereotype, is "contrived"?

And let's be real... most mainstream acts are contrived. I don't think it's fair to count someone out in the rap game, because they are from Australia and young. I'd say her style is extremely refreshing. But, each to their own. <3

It's not just a case of her acting outside of a stereotype - her act consists of putting on a heavy American Southern (?) accent complete with related colloquialisms. She's very contrived. I'm sure even she'd admit it (maybe not publicly though :P).

Every time I've heard her talk she has sounded like she had a light Australian accent.

Though she did move to Southeast USA at the age of 15, and judging by her influences it makes sense to me. She is heavily inspired by Southern hip-hop. As someone who lives in the Southeast, she has been very well accepted by the musicians and fans here so maybe she is just mirroring what she immersed herself in... music wise and celebrity wise.

She is raps best drag queen, minus the penis. Everyone loves a quality drag queen.

Oh, I was only talking about her rapping accent. I agree that her speaking voice is natural.

I'm sure she's very inspired by Southern hip-hop and there's an element of mirroring in how she performs but I also think it would have been a very conscious business decision to adopt the accent, performance style and mannerisms in order to give herself a better chance at commercial success in the US - hence the 'contrived' critique.

As I said before though, it doesn't bother me at all as she's great at what she does.

Oh definitely. But, like I said before... every mainstream artist that a record label invests in is "contrived" to a certain extent. PR training, etc. I don't think it's fair to focus on the young Australian girl who is "trying to be black". And that's not quoting anyone from here, that's from people that live around here.

Reverse racism at it's finest. Talent is talent, she still spits out lyrics better than most rappers in the game, ESPECIALLY the men.

Without wanting to open a can of worms, I think it's understandable that people focus a bit more on her than other artists and I don't see how there's any (reverse) racism involved (although I probably haven't witnessed the reactions you're talking about). If you hear one of her tracks on the radio for the first time, one of the last things you'd believe would be that the artist was born and raised in Australia to an Australian family! It's that juxtaposition of her accent/rapping style with her background, and I believe to a lesser extent; her appearance. That's why I think she gets a bit more focus than other artists who can also be said to be contrived.

Anyway, 'Fancy' is great, isn't it?

I mean yeah, I definitely see what you're saying. I just don't see how it completely turns people off an artist if they like the music.

And I love every song she has recorded, thus far. Basically... I'm completely on board (obviously).

lol. I do understand what you're saying though. Her appearance might be seen as "risky" by some, but I think it makes her easier to market. If a black male older rapper did Fancy, I don't think the general public would care as much, whilst Iggy is almost the polar opposite of someone you'd expect to do a song like this, and that alone gets her attention (and the fact that it's a catchy song helps a lot obviously).

I think it was a bit similar with other artists like Macklemore and Nicki Minaj, they can crossover to the mainstream/people that aren't really into hip hop, partly because of their appearance.

I had major distaste for everything she released prior to "Fancy" but that song is TREMENDOUS. I may give the album a quick spotify

My problem with Iggy and being a bit contrived is the lyrics to Work. She's from the Gold Coast 90mins drive from Brisbane and about 10mins to the Queensland border and 15mins north of Byron Bay, the most easterly point on the mainland. You don't get red dirt that side of the range and you most certainly don't get sugar cane that far south.

Anyway this song is brilliant, much better than Change Your Life which I can't really get into. Up there with Work and Bounce for sure.

^ Interesting. Please tell me you get school skirts and back lanes though or I'll lose all faith in her .
