It was released on November 4, 2013, by Interscope Records as the second promotional single from the record, following the release of "Venus". It was written by Gaga, Paul "DJ White Shadow" Blair, Dino Zisis, and Nick Monson and produced by Gaga and Rick Rubin. Following her hip surgery and cancellation of the Born This Way Ball tour, Gaga became addicted to drugs, which helped her get relief from the pain of surgery and also to cope with her sabbatical. "Dope" was written about this addiction and was the evolution of fan song, that gradually turned into a personal confession for the singer. It was added to Artpop because Gaga felt the album needed something more autobiographical. An electronic rock lament, in the vein of Irish folk ballad rue, "Dope" is a bittersweet song centered around a dark theme. It has minimal production and is only composed off Gaga's vocals sung in an intoxicated slur about substance abuse and the yearning for a long lost love more than drugs. The singer had been promoting "Dope" before its release, with wearing a snapback featuring the word DOPE, as well as posting its lyrics on Instagram, triggering the social media website's concern. The artwork featured Gaga with a big blazer, her face covered with a hat and a grill that made her teeth appear larger. Media outlets found the picture to be "odd" and compared it to different horror films. Gaga performed the song at the 2013 YouTube Music Awards, wearing a red shirt and playing the piano, while tears streaked down her face. The performance in its musical aspect was praised for its emotional quotient, while the direction of Spike Jonze was panned. The song received critical acclaim, with reviewers complementing its simplistic production, the songwriting and Gaga's vocals. After its release, "Dope" reached the top of the music charts in Hungary and Spain, while attaining top-ten positions in Belgium, France, Greece, Italy and Luxembourg. The streams from the YouTube Music Awards performance helped the song become Gaga's 13th top-ten on the Billboard Hot 100 reaching number eight, as well as her highest charting promotional single to date. In February 2013, Lady Gaga suffered labral tear of her right hip, resulting in the singer canceling the remainder of her Born This Way Ball tour dates, which she had embarked to promote her second studio album, Born This Way (2011). She underwent surgery and had to be on rest for the next six months. The singer later recalled in an interview with Attitude magazine that she had serious marijuana addiction during that time in order to bear the pain of the surgery. "I would break the habit and it would sneak back in, and I would break it and sneak back in," Gaga confessed, adding that her life had become a smoke-filled cycle: sleep, sing, smoke. Having cancelled the tour and taken a sabbatical, Gaga started working on the songs for Artpop. "I was just numbing, numbing, numbing myself then sleeping it off, then getting on stage, killing it in pain, then getting off and smoking, smoking, smoking, not knowing what pain was. F**k, if I know what hurts the most, you know? I would break the habit and it would sneak back in and I would break it and sneak back in." —Gaga talking about her addiction to drugs. "Manicure" (stylized as "MANiCURE") is a song written by Lady Gaga and produced by DJ White Shadow in 2012 for ARTPOP. She revealed the song title via Instagram on August 29, 2013 and lyrics almost a year before revealing what it was called on Little Monsters.com. The song was registered onto Gaga's BMI on December 15, 2013. It was revealed on July 24, 2012, that Douglas Aldrich, the guitarist of Whitesnake, was recorded playing guitar on a track in Los Angeles. He tweeted twice about it but have since been deleted: "Just got home from playing guitar on a killer track from one of our most popular female artists. Miss Lady Gaga. [she is] very sweet and great singer." He added, "I say she's sweet but she's a badass. . . [it was a] real fun day. I understand why she is mega. Super talented!" This girly rocker is a punky update of the South Pacific classic "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair" as we hear Gaga demanding a "MAN! CURE!" Gaga debuted the song during her headline show at the iTunes Festival on September 1, 2013. The tune immediately gained one big supporter. Adele tweeted after the performance: "@ladygaga mermaids for life! Brilliant as always thank you for a wonderful night! #MANiCUREisthebest." On The Red Carpet Review: Gaga turns up the sass on this clap-along track, with the opening lyrics demanding action: "Put some lipstick on/ Perfume your neck and put your high heels on." The track's clap-along beat is reminiscent of 2008's "That's Not My Name," made popular by British duo, The Tings Tings.Billboard Review: An obvious choice for a future single, the buoyant "MANiCURE" provides everything that a pop fan aching for a new "Poker Face" would want. With a chorus that's grafted onto the listener's brain after a single listen, double-meanings stemming from shouts of "MAN! CURE!" and a colorful arrangement highlighted by a funk guitar breakdown, this ode to superficial perks graces the high ceilings of Gaga's hits. Popdust Review: "MANiCURE" is one of the stronger tracks on the album with a fantastic breakdown to match the crazy dance beat which stays consistent. This song is refreshing to hear on Gaga's album, she's definitely playing it safe with the melody. However, this track is bound to drive some Top Song title, be it in the Billboard charts or the iTunes charts. Be right back, I'm gonna go jam to this while singing into my hairbrush! Rating: 4/5MTV Review: AND, WE'RE BACK. From the very first growled-on-growled-on-growled-on "Put some lipstick on." You know Gaga's comfortably back in her ARTPOP element. The goofy sexiness of "Sexxx Dreams" is back in full force. Mother Monster demands a "MANiCURE" - the "I" is silent, FYI - she's gonna channel from The Ronettes to The Runaways to get it. February 5, 201411 yr can we get a greater variety of scores Kathy pretty please? Were only seeing the scores of those who hate or love the record i.e. the loons or triangles
February 5, 201411 yr That'd be my fault sorry. I only gave the highest and lowest for each but we can do more detailed from now if that's what you want.
February 5, 201411 yr 'MANiCURE' sounded really promising at the iTunes festival, but the studio version is so disappointing. :(
February 5, 201411 yr No massive disappointments thus far, however I would have placed 'Dope' higher than it ended up. :( 'Do What U Want' and 'G.U.Y' to slay :cheer:
February 5, 201411 yr I can't believe such great songs can get such shit ratings on here but critics give them good reviews! Its baffling!

Aura", (originally titled "Burqa") is a song written by Lady Gaga in 2012 for ARTPOP. On October 29, 2012, Gaga sent a message to Zedd on Twitter saying: "been listening to **rq* all day". Some fans believed this to be "Burqa", the working title of a confirmed track on ARTPOP. The name was also mentioned during Monstervision No.8, when Gaga asked Terry Richardson: "Are you singing Burqa?" during the clip. This speculation of the name title was furthered when Joe Germanotta told fans that "Burqa" was the best song on ARTPOP. The song was registered onto Gaga's BMI on November 5, 2013. The song was originally composed under the working title of "Burqa", but the name was changed during the process of making the song. When the demo leaked, from which Emma, a moderator at GagaDaily, whom Gaga's wheelchair was named after, stated that she had been given permission to reveal the title of the track and its producers. A demo of the song, running for roughly four minutes, leaked online on August 5, 2013, and soon began being played on several radio stations in Australia and South Africa. The final version of the song has Gaga singing in a lower voice instead of screaming the lyrics. Gaga explained during a Twitter Q&A that "These vocals were done at a special time during conception of the record. They were important to me and @Zedd. This is our vision". On The Red Carpet Review: The track opens with guitar tinges reminiscent of the singer's 2011 track "Americano." The eerie dance track, which was also featured in the film "Machete Kills," prefaces the album's overall theme as new and unique from previous Gaga releases, with the singer declaring, "I killed my former and left her in the trunk on highway 10."Billboard Review: Two years after kicking off "Born This Way" with the inspiring "Marry The Night," Gaga begins "ARTPOP" under an exotic shroud, relating Muslim culture to the trappings of her famous lifestyle. "Enigma pop star is fun, she wear burqa for fashion/It's not a statement, as much as just a move of passion," Gaga spits on a song that positions "ARTPOP" as an album with ambitious ideas and breakneck electronic passages Popdust Review: Wow! Gaga is not holding back on this new album and “Aura” shows us exactly that. It’s clear that Gaga has been exploring some new sound with this dubstep-influenced soundtrack that quickly transitions into something more familiar as she starts bellowing the lyrics. The beginning of this track may come as a shock (especially the creepy autotuned voice that is first introduced), but don’t be afraid. This is bigger than fear. This is ARTPOP. Popdust says: 3.5/5MTV Review: Well, this track certainly ruffled feathers back when a demo version hit the Internet early in August. While the explosively ethereal choruses on “Aura” are pure Gaga, the verses are cackled, hissed, consciously Auto-Tuned, and more vocally fried than Quinn’s friend Tiffany on “Daria.” I feel like this is an important step for Gaga to take. To paraphrase Willa Cather (‘CAUSE GOOGLE SEARCH IS NOOOOT HELPING ME OUT RUN), an artist must learn to paint before they learn to unpaint; a writer must learn to write before they learn to unwrite. Lady Gaga’s vocal chops had been proven a long time ago, so it’s very interesting to see her exercise vocal stylings that are perhaps less classically skilled but more innovative all the same. Plus, “I killed my former and/ Left her in a trunk on highway 10″ has gotta be one of the greatest opening album lyrics of all time. February 6, 201411 yr Author 7. 'ARTPOP' Average: 7.71 http://i.imgur.com/UgjueLS.jpg The album's eery title track lands in at number seven. Artpop" is a song by Lady Gaga released on her fourth studio album ARTPOP. Gaga confirmed during a track-by-track commentary with Sirius XM that the song is also known as the "Swan Song". It was also the first song written for the album, and the one worked on the longest out of the other tracks. It was first mentioned on a photo posted on Instagram and LittleMonsters.com by Gaga on August 3, 2012. It included lyrics: "We could, we could, belong together. ARTPOP." The same day, she also revealed a photo of a tattoo that read "ARTPOP". The lyrics for the bleepy, Trip-Hoppy title track of Lady Gaga's third album are a contemplation on the crossing of art and pop culture. They find the New York songstress comparing a potential relationship between two people to the kinship between "art" and "pop." She croons: "Come to me In all your glamour and cruelty Just do that thing that you do And I'll undress you Give it time Sometimes the simplest move is right The melody that you choose Can rescue you." Producer White Shadow told MTV News the song was a defining moment during the making of ARTPOP: "I think 'Artpop' is definitive just because it is the title track," he said. "It's, like, one of the first ones she wrote. It's like the backbone of the record, right? It's what the record is about and, again, it kind of set up the stage to do different stuff. Gaga explained the concept of the album during a Sirius XM special: "Every track on ARTPOP represents one adrenaline rush," she said. "Adrenaline of sex, adrenaline of art, adrenaline of fashion, adrenaline of drugs, etc. On The Red Carpet Review: Gaga declares "my ARTPOP could mean anything," serving as a blueprint for the album's overall creative direction. The dance track, which features 80s-inspired beats, is underwhelming as a title track, offering less pizzazz and interest than previous tracks.Billboard Review: "My ARTPOP could mean anything," Gaga sings on the album's title track, while later adding, "Come to me, without your subtext and fantasy." Gaga is an artist that creates for the sake of creation, and this is her manifesto, set over a lurching electro-jazz beast that grows wilder with each passing second. Popdust Review: So this is what it's all been about. Her project, ARTPOP, has been described as more than an album, and likewise, and this is more than a song. I love the simple back beat she uses on this track almost like an empty canvas which allows her voice to be the focus of the song. Her harmonies are typical Gaga: fun - soprano notes with deep, gritty bass tones! Yeah Gaga, "we could belong together" especially with this song! Popdust says: 4/5MTV Review: "My ARTPOP could mean anything," Gaga croons on track No. 8. Unfortunately, here it just translates into a boring title track.
