March 12, 201411 yr I will assess Up in more detail when I get to it in my countdown of fave films of all-time. There'll be a wait as it's pretty high UP. As for the fun parts of the movie, it's an adventure/explorer romp 30's-stylee, a commentary on the individual getting stomped on by big biz, it's about finding love after living with abject loneliness and loss (for young and old alike), and it has a wacky bird and bitchy dogs, a mad scientist, period charm and modern fizz. It's pure genius. What topic is more universal to mankind, and ever will be, than loss and loneliness and love. The great thing is it avoids the usual Hollywood obsession of romantic young couples falling in love and sh*gging, cos love can be more than that, it's not the be-all and end-all in life and there are other kinds of love. So there! Nyah! 5 out of 10, harrumph! B-)
March 12, 201411 yr Completely agree. While it may not be as witty or on point as a lot of their other films (it has wit in abundance but comparing it to their highs i mean), it deals most explicitly with the most universal theme that they've attempted to tackle. The 'Toy Story' trilogy does it too which is why i feel so strongly for those too, but here it's arguably more damning and "real". And in my opinion, two of the most relatable characters in their entire output in Carl and Russell. Yes the talking dogs/bird whatever wear thin eventually but the charm of those two shine through for me.
March 12, 201411 yr In addition, I also think the latter part of Up is really adept in covering the theme of moving on from death of a loved one. Most people have to deal with grieving at least once in their life and it can be a difficult theme to handle (particularly when a lot of the audience are too young to know about it) but I think this is done excellently. A really emotional theme about real life done beautifully which is not prevalent in many other Pixar movies. I generally think the movie as a whole was a real risk for Pixar which paid off massively. The characters are all wildly different for one and the actual plot quite eccentric - balloon house, talking dogs, big birds, flying machines. It could easily have been a mess but it was probably my favorite Pixar movie post Nemo. Edited March 12, 201411 yr by Chez Wombat
March 14, 201411 yr Author As mentioned before, the commentary will contain spoilers. You still believe that the original is the best though, something I personally disagree with but can't complain at! A key factor to the sustainment of quality is that time is taken between the second and third film, it wasn't rushed in order to make quick money but attention was allowed to be given to the story. This paid off as well as it, deservedly, became the highest grossing animated film ever! It builds on some of the messages contained in Toy Story 2 about growing up and makes them the focus of the story. We've all been there and that's what makes it even more magical, it's got the fun and action for the younger audience but the older audience can easily relate to the messages it's trying to convey. It was great to see the main Toy Story characters again for a final full length film, in particular allowing Jessie and Bullseye to be part of the gang. It has everything that you would want from a Pixar film and therefore, in some ways, it feels like a Pixar Greatest Hits and it shows that they do still have their magic in them which, according to many critics and indeed this rate, they have been lacking somewhat in recent years. It's full of action, a thrilling and interesting story including certain plot twists, a wide range of new and exciting characters and, on top of this, strong messages and moving scenes which is what Pixar does best. For anyone, in particular those who grew up with the films like many on Buzzjack have, the incinerator scene is truly moving. It's the second best Pixar moment, after Up's first scenes for me as it really makes you believe that there is a chance that they are about to die even though Pixar would never realistically actually go through with it. The film also uses some of Up's messages as well as Andy has to move on, this time he is moving on from his childhood. The end of the film sees him pass on his toys to Bonnie which is the perfect end to a perfect trilogy. The toys are allowed a new life with a girl that truly cares for them and it suggests that the toys will continue to provide enterainment, joy and fun for generations both within the story as well as in the real world. 93JqK32LqW4 I know most people see this as OMGAMAZING, but it's pretty much on par with the second one for me. Hilarious, touching and cute, but still missing that slight spark needed to lift it to perfection (even though I have no idea what that spark IS).That dumpster scene is the closest time I've come to crying when watching a movie in AGESWay better than the 2nd one and almost as good as the first. Excellent movie. For now it just doesn't have the same place in my heart that the others do. Edited March 14, 201411 yr by Rabbit Heart
March 14, 201411 yr Thank god this isn't #1. I'm not sure if it deserved top 3 but it's really great nonetheless
March 15, 201411 yr 'Toy Story 3' is absolutely flawless. It really is the perfect "threequel" film and shows other companies HOW to do a trilogy and not fluff it up at any point! That incinerator scene got me crying! Firstly because I genuinely thought that was going to be the end (it didn't even occur to me that Pixar would never kill anyone off!) but then when they survived it, I couldn't handle it due to being overwhelmingly happy  Such a strong scene. (It was horrible (but such a beautiful touch) having them join together and kind of accepting their fate).
March 15, 201411 yr Perfection. Very personal to me too (given i named my dog after Woody in the build up to its release) and so it'll always resonate with me because of him. That scene in particular was torturous. I'm slightly worried that 'Finding Nemo' will beat 'Toy Story' now. Worried, not because i dislike 'Finding Nemo', but more the latter is one of my favourite films of all time and has to do it :(
March 15, 201411 yr I've not got much to add to what everyone else has already said about those two movies. They're utterly fantastic. The opening sequence of Up is astonishingly well done. It's the closest I've ever come to genuine tears watching a Pixar movie. Similarly, the incinerator scene in Toy Story 3 almost got me again. Totally superb. I'm hoping for a Nemo win personally, but either of the remaining two deserve it. The top 4 in fact were all deserving. Perfection.
March 15, 201411 yr As fantastic as the opening scene of Up is, TS3 being above it just goes to show what the rest of the film is lacking. The incinerator scene is, of course, incredible but the whole thing is wonderful. Hope the first one wins although Finding Nemo would be (almost) worthy as well.
March 16, 201411 yr Growing up, there were two addresses you'd remember: Your home address & P Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney. 'Finding Nemo' will hopefully win, but I have kind of come to accept that it'll "only" come second, but behind 'Toy Story'? I'll GLADLY take that! I really thought I was the only one on here who loved FN that much. So I'm pleased to see there are more fans <3
March 16, 201411 yr Finding Nemo should win this but I'm not holding my breath Toy Story would be a decent winner but it's not THAT good imo
March 16, 201411 yr Finding Nemo is my fav all the way but i'm kinda hoping Toy Story takes it now. iconic etc.
March 16, 201411 yr if i had taken part in this toy story would have garnered a 0 from me. really hate it and have done since i first saw it as a boy.
March 16, 201411 yr Toy Story IS Pixar. if i had taken part in this toy story would have garnered a 0 from me. really hate it and have done since i first saw it as a boy. This has upset me more than it should :(
March 16, 201411 yr Toy Story IS Pixar. This has upset me more than it should :( ohhhh don't be upset, plenty of fans of it. I voted for it and have loved it since I first saw it and no nostalgia or childhood trauma influencing my judgement  Top 100 greatest films of all time list...has to be in there - I first compiled my all-time fave movie list at 14, very few from then still in it. Lotsa Pixar though B-)
