What do you guys think was the most undeservedly under performing film at the cinemas or unjustly highly criticized movies of 2013? And what do you think was the worst film of 2013?

For me it has to be;

- Carrie (The acting was very good and was extremely entertaining. Should have more than 50% on rotten tomataoes if it wasnt constantly compared to the original).

- Philomena (It did well in the UK, but poorly in the US. WHY??!! One of the best movies last year).

- The Call (Definatley the most under-rated film in the UK last year for me! Superb acting, intense, thrilling and all around great performances. If it did well in the US, it puzzles me why no interest in the UK :()

But the worst film last year was Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

Heard if Short Term 12, it is supposed to be very good! The thing about The Call is that you don't expect it to be very good but the acting is amazing and there is a lot of suspense. My mate found himself yelling at the cinema screen during some parts at the characters. The end fell apart though but it was very under-appreciated in England

-I haven't watched "Philomena" yet. It was released in my country yesterday. But if you watch the rest of nominated films (apart from Nebraska) you will realise why nobody cares for "The Call". It's very weak movie in comparison with these film. It's good only as a pop-corn movie. It has suspence but some scenes were hilarious and they shouldn't be based on the basic story..

-The Carrie was good because the legend "Stephen King" wrote this novel. I would like it more if i was a teenager.

-I think that the most underated film of 2013 was "Dead Man Down". This movie was amazing!!! Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace were great as "couple". It has an interesting story with intense and the directory was decent. This movie should be more successful but i think that the marketing team didn't help it (Shame!). It was definitely one of my favourite movies in last year. I know that it hasn't an Academic profile (which i love) but i think that it was great as an action movie.

I think The Call was released at an unfortunate date when the oscar films were just getting released. Obviously people are going to watch an Oscar-buzzed movie than one that has 50% on Rotten Tomatoes (can go either way) bu the majority of my friends loved it. But that might be a teenage thing :P

I hate it when a movie is really good but gets so poor marketing so they cannot cater themselves to a wide enough audience. Really want 'Laggies' to do well this year but such an awful distributor has decided to pick it up. I doubt it'll even make it to $20 million worldwide

Side Effects was really good. Didn't see the final twist coming for quite some time! It's quite a good thriller, but didn't get much mainstream recognition, despite the critics liking it, and it has a strong cast too.

Worst film I saw was White House Down.

'Disconnect' and 'Maniac' are two films that went unnoticed, but deserved more attention. Particularly the latter. Such a wonderfully, dark, twisted and chilling remake of a horror classic. A remake done RIGHT, imo. Elijah Wood makes a damn good psycho!

'Disconnect' is one of those that follows several people's stories, but connects together towards the end and I found it so gripping and brilliantly done. Jason Bateman was brilliant in it!

Maniac looks creepy and disturbing! Apparently people threw up in its first screening. But it got good reviews, still, too scary and gory for me :P
Oh yes, it's SO messed up! Just how I like films though. (I'm a psychopath in reality, I guess. :P)
I agree with Philomena! For one that hasn't been mentioned yet I'd answer The Way Way Back. Superb casting, plus the same directors as The Descendants but even better than that in my opinion!

I find it hard to define 'underrated', it all depends on the angle. I mean, I LOVED Philomena but critically, it's one of the 'Best Picture' nominees and I seem to remember the UK Box Office run being consistent (I think it peaked in terms of position during the 3rd weekend of release?) but internationally maybe it is underrated. I've not heard any buzz around it in real life either, among people I know.

A truly underrated movie that I really enjoyed was One Chance, the one with James Corden as Paul Potts. Funny, charming (+ a song from Taylor Swift on the soundtrack!) yet Wikipedia lists the box office takings as just under $6m. :(
