Vince Clarke was the Vince Clarke* of Yazoo before he was the Vince Clarke of Erasure (so far he hasn't been the Vince Clarke of the Pet Shop Boys, that's always been Chris Lowe...but give him time). Anyway, Vince Clarke is also well known as a remixer and one of his greatest jobs was turning the sprawling 'Wrote For Luck' by Happy Mondays into a tight pop tune.

* Vince Clarke (noun): Man standing behind a keyboard on Top of the Pops while a slightly more recognisable partner sings.

Robert Smith of The Cure was a guest on South Park and central to their episode as was Radiohead

Yes, it's obvious but it is an excuse to play Talking Heads - whose song Radiohead is where the pevious band took their name from

Tom Jones covered Burning Down The House with Nina Persson of The Cardigans for his "Reload" album. On the same album, he also teamed up with Divine Comedy to cover "All Mine", originally be Portishead -

Portishead = Bristol. An earlier Bristolian popstar and mega-successful pop songwriter was Roger Cook (a very long list of songs to his credit), who teamed up with the marvellous Madeleine Bell and Herbie "bassline on Walk On The Wild Side" Flowers to form pop/soul band Blue Mink. 4 years of fab pop hits including this one the fab Our World..

(PS Roger Cook is the male singer)

From a band called Sky to a song with Sky in the title, surprised they've not cropped up yet

'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' was (quite) famously covered by all-round oddbod William Shatner. Another of his (quite) famous covers was 'Common People' by Pulp.

When I see People, I think of people who need people, the luckiest people in the world. According to Barbra Streisand. The best thing she ever did was cover the brilliant gospel soul white 60's singer-songwriter Laura Nyro. I'll go with the original version of Stoney End...

Despite being called "Sisters" the band in Scissor Sisters are not related, just like the Righteous Brothers. Here with "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling"

The Righteous Brothers were indeed not brothers and neither of them had the surname Righteous. One of them was actually called Bill Medley so here is a medley which reached the top 30 in 1981

Graham Nash of Hollies was in Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Neil Young was in Buffalo Springfield

From Buffalo Springfield to Dusty Springfield, one of the UKs best soul singers here with "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself"

I had a cat named Dusty once. She was grey with unnecessarily short legs. Despite the unnecessarily short legs, she managed to run away. :(

edit... oops that's too new isn't it? Oh well, it's Kanye's best so hopefully it can be overlooked...

technically it's 2010 and a tad too recent, though I can happily keep your kitty link and double the link into the bargain (sorry for the bad memories!)

Runaway cat meet another runaway stray cat

Stray Cats and Runaway Boys

From cats we go naturally to rats, The Boomtown Rats more specifically with their dark song, "I Don't Like Mondays"

Geldof's mob were almost certainly the only band with the word "Boomtown" in their name. Meanwhile, a couple of years later, this lot were most probably the only band to use the word "boomtown" in the lyrics of a number one single.
