September 1, 200618 yr What people should do if they're scared of going to the gym is buy one of those treadmill things from Argos so they can do exercise at home. There's a problem there though too - fatty foods are cheap, hence most poor people are forced to buy them. Buying a treadmill isn't exactly cheap, and most people aren't scared of going to the gym, they can't afford to go to the gym. We need to tax fatty foods and subsidise healthy foods. The problem is, most healthy foods don't exactly taste as nice as fatty foods - we need to find, or make, a health food that doesn't sacrifice taste. Another reason why dieting is quite hard.
September 1, 200618 yr True, but you have to consider that it isn't all that hard to eat more than you should without calorie counting. 200 or so calories isn't that much. That's, say, a few biscuits, or maybe an extra snack or two, which most people wouldn't realise added up so easily. It's not the kind of extra that the stereotype constantly makes out, i.e. extra burgers, it's a shockingly easy amount to overeat by, and an accident that can consistently be made. Well, in most cases you know full well that people eat way more than they should, or not the right foods. Everytime I watch 'You Are What You Eat' they show what the person eats in a day/week, so there's no denying it.

Well, they can save up for it just like everyone else has to.
September 1, 200618 yr Well, they can save up for it just like everyone else has to. We're talking about POOR people here, people who struggle to pay the bills. Poor people can very rarely save up.

Everytime I watch 'You Are What You Eat' they show what the person eats in a day/week, so there's no denying it. The people who eat load, as on 'You Are...' aren't the huge majority. It's extremely easy to go overweight and people on those sorts of shows are usually the extremes of society, but it leads people to believe they are very common and in the majority.
September 1, 200618 yr We're talking about POOR people here, people who struggle to pay the bills. Poor people can very rarely save up. Yes, and I'm not exactly rich yet had to wait until christmas and get my gym membership as a present. They shouldn't spend all their money on food then.
September 1, 200618 yr Hahah omg some of you lot are being WELL harshignorant in here. Shocking =/. And I agree with everything that Prince of Sheba's written. [pointless, hah]
September 1, 200618 yr Yes, and I'm not exactly rich yet had to wait until christmas and get my gym membership as a present. They shouldn't spend all their money on food then. :o That last line is the most ignorant thing I've heard on here. Poor people do NOT spend all of their money on food, they struggle to pay bills, and they get the fatty foods because they're CHEAP, they do NOT spend all of their money on food. These are people who struggle to have a good Christmas, where the children are lucky to get a present on their birthday, and people assume they spend all of their money on food because they are fat, when in fact they are fat BECAUSE they cannot afford to buy healthy food. How on earth anyone can think poor people would spend all of their food when they can't afford to pay their bills is beyond me.

I thought we were talking about fat people, not poor people? You're twisting my words here. <_< Not all food is expensive anyway, normal stuff like bread and beans is cheaper than Mcdonalds.

Well you said that line in response to my quote, so I took it as referring to poor people as was in the quote. And bread and beans isn't exactly a very healthy or varied diet either <_< Edited September 1, 200618 yr by Prince of Sheba
September 1, 200618 yr Well you said that line in response to my quote, so I took it as referring to poor people as was in the quote. And bread and beans isn't exactly a very healthy or varied diet either <_< I was just giving an example of two foods that aren't junk foods. Beans are good for you anyway, protein. And don't do that <_< face at me, it's healthier than a microwave burger.

September 1, 200618 yr I think there is a crisis but I don't really see it TBH. At my school well its the years 7 and 8's that are have the "obese" kids. Obviously you still get bigger people in all of the other years but on the whole it tends to be the younger years that have obese kids. However when I go out I can really see obese kids, but its not always there fault. At Mcdonalds or whatever its like 20p extra to go to to a large meal than a medium meal and it doesn't help that the adverts are all over the shop, I mean the English Football Association's main sponsor is McDonalds. thats not setting a good example to kikds at all. Some people are just different though. Personally I can eat as much as I like as I just burn all the calories off becuase I do a lot of exercise but some people just don't work that way but the fact is Britan and America especially are facing an obesity crisis and its only going to get worse. -_-
September 1, 200618 yr I mean the English Football Association's main sponsor is McDonalds. thats not setting a good example to kikds at all. Absolutely correct Rooney. I find it quite disgraceful that these 'superfit' athletes seem to be all out there sponsoring McDonalds, Coke, Pepsi, etc... They're just thinking about the money and not really giving a toss about the health of kids who look up to them as role models. I'd like to see the likes of Beckham, Ronaldinho and Co. actually sponsor fresh fruit, veggies or natural fruit smoothies as opposed to fizzy pop, then let's see how long it takes for healthy eating and nutrition to become 'cool' with the kids.....

Well that would be nice but of course companies who make things like natural fruit smoothies unfortunately don't have the money for it and that's the deciding factor with those type of things :( That is another big problem though even with products that are supposedly really healthy like that have all kinds of c**p in it yet it's marketed as 'a perfect way to get on your way to five a day' or something like that. Too many people care more about raking in the money rather than caring about the 'fighting obesity' so they come up with cons like that. -_- Same with McDonalds adding lettuce to their burgers and pass them off as 'healthy salads' and they were later found out to have more fat than the normal burgers. Saying all this though I survive on Ready Meals when I'm at University yet I'm UNDERweight

The government really needs to knuckle down and subsidise these kinds of things TBH -_-
September 2, 200618 yr cripes! firstly, it certainly isnt only poor people who are obese, in fact id suggest quite the oposite, that wealthier people are more overweight. 'you are what you eat' (comming back on tv on weds) clearly shows that these fat people eat $h!te... all processed foods, nothing fresh. it really is a simple equasion, intake more fuel then you expend.... you will get fat!!!!

Exactly Which is why more sport at school is essential, at least 8 hrs a week or more of physical activity combined with healthy school dinners instead of the $h!t that is shovelled out of troughs in the school dining rooms Parents also need to be encouraged to make their children play sport outside of school or join gyms, infact the government should heavily subsidise it as it will work out cheaper than what fat kids full of cholesterol will cost the NHS in future years

September 2, 200618 yr and they should change the food that is being served to kids in school as well. i've been watching jamie olivers programme trying to change things in schools and its afwul to see what kids eat on their lunchbreak.
