September 2, 200620 yr cripes! firstly, it certainly isnt only poor people who are obese, in fact id suggest quite the oposite, that wealthier people are more overweight. 'you are what you eat' (comming back on tv on weds) clearly shows that these fat people eat $h!te... all processed foods, nothing fresh. it really is a simple equasion, intake more fuel then you expend.... you will get fat!!!! And most of the people on 'You Are What You Eat' aren't exactly rich are they?
September 2, 200620 yr I saw the program you were talking about Nicky, and i agree 100%. Your very right about kids not wanting to exercise btw, p.e at my school consisted of p***ing around until you got told off, and that made no difference because all the fat kids didnt want to do it anyway, they simply wouldnt listen. Its their own problem, so its up to them to sort it out, i agree, its got to be hard, but not impossible.
September 2, 200620 yr plus theres TOO MANY KIDS SPENDING TOO LONG ON THE INTERNET!!! lol. and not playing out with their m8s, footy, bike rides or whatever. That's generally because they CAN'T. 10 years ago when I was small, where I lived there were two nearby school fields and two other fields where we could play and I spent a lot of time there. Now, one of the school fields has been fenced off and the other one is being fenced off .And the other two fields are now full of houses. This is also true for many places. And unless you live near a proper park there never really IS anywhere to play any more so people HAVE to do different things with their time. tv, internet, ps2 etc... And if they do go out, there isn't much for them to do like there used to be.
September 2, 200620 yr The thing is it's too easy these days to get overweight. People assume that fat people are always shovelling food into their mouths when they're actually not most of the time. Most overweight people live in cities, where it is really hard to get exercise as most playing fields at schools are being sold off and you can't exactly go out and play or exercise in most playgrounds in the cities these days - they're infested with chavs and druggies mostly these days. It's very easy to gain weight if you don't calorie count - a McDonalds meal fulfills about 3/4 of the amount of calories a child should get in a day, and when you take into account the salt and grease loaded meals that passes for school lunches these days, is it really any wonder we have an obesity crisis? PE isn't exactly all that good for kids - at my old school, PE would usually consist of throwing a bean bag around a room, and climbing up an apparatus until some idiot would mess around and PE would be stopped early. Some great exercise that was. Even when it is proper exercise - like running - overweight kids rarely get any encouragement, and if found wanting, are usually made to do it again in front of everyone, which is extremely embarrassing for them, and hardly puts them in the right frame of mind when they're being made fun of by the other children. If anything, it puts them off exercise, as they are made to think they can't do it. Also, losing weight once you have it is VERY hard. Gyms cost an arm and a leg these days, and starvation isn't exactly a good diet, and usually ends up being ruined. Even if they do lose weight, it will usually be gained back quickly unless it is a sustainable diet, something very hard to come across. No wonder most people these days are more overweight. I find it very upsetting the way most people stereotype overweight people these days. Most people claim they shove burgers into their mouths constantly when in fact they don't. It is so easy to get overweight these days. Maybe they should be less ignorant. EDIT: Also, with sport, quite a lot of overweight children aren't willing to do it. They rarely make an effort because when they do, all it is rewarded with is laughter, and they rarely feel it makes any difference in the long term, so they end up going home depressed. Comfort eating is also a big problem - I confess that I was overweight when I was younger, and I used to comfort eat. I'm still a little overweight now, even though I exercise more and no longer eat so much. If someone would make fun of you, you would eat something nice, because it usually made you feel better, not about yourself, but you would in a way be swallowing your emotions down as well. It's a horrid cycle which will not stop unless people realise that ridicule DOES NOT help at all. I despise the common view that ridiculing overweight people motivates them, as this is very rarely the case and people who think it is are complete fools. This is probably the best post I've ever read on this fourm. B)
September 2, 200620 yr Which is why more sport at school is essential, at least 8 hrs a week or more of physical activity combined with healthy school dinners instead of the $h!t that is shovelled out of troughs in the school dining rooms Parents also need to be encouraged to make their children play sport outside of school or join gyms, infact the government should heavily subsidise it as it will work out cheaper than what fat kids full of cholesterol will cost the NHS in future years I do agree with you on the fact that kids need to do a lot more sport at school and the goverment needs to take a long hard look at it, but its easier said than done. The thing is with PE that is very kid is different; some kids are great at it and some kids aren't and its normally mixed ability so for some kids PE can be quite depressing really as there are people who are a lot better than them so they loose confidence in that respect. Unless you do take PE as a subject once you get into KS4 you only do 1 hour a week which is really quite poor when normally you only do about half an hours physical activity with all gettting changed and messing about. The best sports though for burning of calories though is either football or rugby as your running about for ages and you cover miles without actually knowing it, but some kids are better than others at it and the fatter kids must feel like $h!t when there playing football with everyone else.

I personally think we should introduce cycling into PE, it's such a fun way to get exercise, and maybe each school should be provided with bicycles, as they were the main reason why I lost weight, and they're far better than confidence eroding rugby or football, as in the end most overweight people realise they aren't as good at the sport as the others and just stop trying. And when they are put into rugby teams - I would inevitably end up in the 'rejects' (read - D team) you get no exercise at all because usually you have to do tag rugby, and most people there just can't be bothered, they've been told they're c**p and they have no motivation to make an effort because whenever they do, usually a few people in the A/B team on the next pitch will just look over and ridicule them all. It's basically the same with football as well.

It's basically the same with football as well. Cycling would be good but it would cost the goverment too much money and then you'd have the usual pricks who would trash the bikes etc. -_- I see were your coming from with football though but i'm in two minds abotu the whole situation TBH. Obviously it would be better if the best players played together and the worst players played together, but then the worse players have no motivation and they usually mes around were as the better players take it very seriously and almost too seriously sometimes. If you work hard at football or rugby though you can burn tuns of calories off though as you cover miles and miles across the pitch but some people don't have stamina or the effort to do that though. -_-
September 2, 200620 yr The worst players always get put in goal and defence are then blamed for conceding when all the good players go and play upfornt as they want to score... -_-
September 2, 200620 yr Overweight kids wouldn't have the confidence to do sport and p.e. either. It's easy to say 'make them exercise' but you're not really thinking about what the person wants.
September 2, 200620 yr And most of the people on 'You Are What You Eat' aren't exactly rich are they? i didnt say rich... i said 'better off'.. and i stand by that, they tend to be able to afford food/luxury items. poor people have poor nutrition but that often means smaller amounts, and they cant afford cars to ferry kids to school, video games/internet so the kids play out on the street.
September 2, 200620 yr Overweight kids wouldn't have the confidence to do sport and p.e. either. It's easy to say 'make them exercise' but you're not really thinking about what the person wants. physical education.... the title says it all... most kids dont want to learn maths or english, science or r.e. but its good for them to do so.... likewise p.e.

We can't all have everything we want in life Lucy, sometimes we all have to do things we don't like and not liking PE and sport is not an excuse to not do it, its important that kids burn off calories
September 2, 200620 yr We can't all have everything we want in life Lucy, sometimes we all have to do things we don't like and not liking PE and sport is not an excuse to not do it, its important that kids burn off calories I refused to do it a lot, and *touch wood* I'm thinner than I've ever been :cheer: Maybe I'm just lucky? @ Mushy's point, making a kid sit on a chair and work out some sums is different in so many ways to making an unathletic child attempt an assault course -_-
September 2, 200620 yr ... its not about making an unathletic kid do an assult course.. its about educating them into being healthy by excercise. besides, i dont accept that some kids arnt athletic, we are all born with the same bodies, ok some are more inclined to excercise, but the idea of p.e. is that you educate your body to do excercise! 99% of overweight people around today are like that through bad nutrition, greed, and sheer laziness..... non of which are vallied excuses.

Well I was never told this, maybe you should teach P.E Mushy  I got the impression it was giving the athletic kids an hour to play, and making the unfit kids spend an hour getting humiliated  I agree with the last bit though, although I would lower the percentage slightly -_-
September 2, 200620 yr I refused to do it a lot, and *touch wood* I'm thinner than I've ever been :cheer: Maybe I'm just lucky? I know people like that well just one. He refuses to try in PE all the time and is like a stick. :o He eats quite a bit as well, but its just the way he is and they way his family are.
September 2, 200620 yr Actually, having done PE, we aren't all born with the same bodies. Some people are endomorphs, they gain weight really easily and find it really hard to lose it...there are other types, a type that is naturally slight of build, a type that gets muscly easily and an average type, I forget names though.

September 2, 200620 yr true... but you can train your bodies, they adapt quite quickly.. just look at body builders for eg... and this is the point of p.e. Body builders look weird. :puke2: It's just unnatural.
September 2, 200620 yr Body builders look weird. :puke2: It's just unnatural. i totally agree..... but its an example of what the body can be made to do... :)
