The Spice Girls were massive flops because they weren't the biggest group of all time and we've been kidding ourselves that they were in any way successful for years and we must stop trying.

This basically.

G.R.L currently #2 on Australian ITunes, wonder if it'll made an inpact in the UK, Capital have playlisted them. :)

Kinda worried about Neon Jungles album released next week though, it seems really hard for albums to do well for girl groups!

What do we all think the future holds for GRL after Simone's tragic passing? :(
What do we all think the future holds for GRL after Simone's tragic passing? :(

I think they will take a year out to recover. They might continue as a 4 piece or not at all. Simone was a major influence and played a huge part in the bands vocals

It'll have to be it for the campaign for 'Ugly Heart' in the US. As Cameron said, they'll have to take time out and, if they continue, it will be as a four-piece.
I don't think they'd replace her; too prominent vocally and although early days, you could tell they all got along. So sad :(

It would be really distasteful if they replaced her with a new girl, but the thing is, their songs will need to be completely re-worked, as her voice was really prominent above all the others. Even in the performances I've seen she was clearly pushed as the leader of the group, in a very Nicole Scherzinger way.

I was nodding along in complete agreement until you compared Simone to Nicole Scherzinger :o

Well, it's obivous it's not exactly the same case, as Nicole was more than glad to be pushed to the front. What I meant is that Simone was very prominent image-wise and vocally, so whatever new music that GRL releases now is going to sound very different.

If they continue, I predict Emmalyn becoming the lead singer. As much as Lauren and Natasha have brilliant voices, Lauren's is nice but not very powerful and Natasha's although powerful... is quite thin. Paula, for obvious reasons, will not become lead singer.

Emmalyn I'd say has the overall package to be what it takes to become the 'face' of GRL; I mean, the girls themselves even said at one point that she had the BIGGEST voice of the group. Sometimes she is a bit and miss, though - live that is of course.

Their choreography will of course remain on point as Paula has always done a great job with it and even though Simone was a brilliant dancer, the other girls are equally as talented in that respect. It's just odd because the group will never look the same again. It just feels like there's now a huge gap where Simone once was and it almost feels as if Simone held the group together in a way.

Anyway, I hope they do carry on eventually and become hugely successful. If bands such as Queen and Suicide Silence can do it, I'm sure these girls are strong and independent enough to hold it together. It would be a huge shame if they disbanded as they are so beautiful and talented and I love them to bits.

RIP Simone.

For once I actually agree with you :o

Little Mix - Seem to have very "average" success here? I mean, they can never be described as flops but it seems that they aren't destined to be MASSIVE. They aren't really singles artists and their album sales are fine, but nothing amazing. Even with X-Factor, Britains Got Talent, a connection to One Direction and all the other promo/airplay they just don't seem to be generating much of an interest. Where do they go from here? They aren't taking off in America either no matter how much money has been invested in them. I don't know what will happen with them. Will they continue releasing 200K - 300K selling albums, one or two top ten singles per album and then disappearing again? The fun of girl groups has mostly been their huge single success (Spice Girls and the #1's, Girls Aloud and their top ten streaks) and the sexy image, so Little Mix aren't really filling the traditional girl group role or even feel like they are "there" most of the time. There's no gossip, no lads talking about the "fit one", no sexy music videos, no huge singles....just decent sales, decent single success and then rinse + repeat?

Neon Jungle - Career over for them? There was clearly a demand for them in the spring but they completely killed their brand by releasing Louder and Can't Stop The Love. They became successful for being the edgy, gritty, polar opposite to the "nice" girl groups and they completely watered down their output for the album release. The album flopped, Louder flopped, Can't Stop The Love didn't even chart. Do they have much of a fanbase? Apparently their next album is going to be more "personal" which I guess means no more big dance anthems.

Fifth Harmony - Had their big X-Factor debut on a semi-final and only went in at #21. I doubt they will do much better than that in future without the "OMG NEW GIRLBAND" X-Factor slot. Apparently haven't done well in the US either so probably get dropped next year.

The Saturdays - Longest running girl group we have, very hit and miss. Currently taking time out/recording a new album but radio completely abandoned their Greatest Hits campaign and they seem to be self-funding their albums now. One hit could turn it all around (What About Us says hi) but with four kids and no radio support, will 2015 be the year they split?

G.R.L - My prediction for most success in 2015. Simone's death has been tragic but also been a huge talking point in music. Everyone is waiting for their next move and Lighthouse will probably be massive. They are more "women" than Little Mix/Fifth Harmony, have sex appeal, have talent, have the producers and have one genuine hit under their belt.

I could see Little Mix having a slump next year (thinking Rebecca Ferguson type success), Fifth Harmony being dropped, Neon Jungle releasing another top 40 single and then dissapearing again, The Saturdays to either have a surprise hit or split and G.R.L's Lighthouse song to be massive.

Fifth harmony won't be dropped just because they do rake in money from US success. But other than that I 100% agree with you Shadow. Little Mix have huge pre-album singles but after that their singles recieve average success and album sales are alright too, nothing uhmazing but still. I think they're the biggest band at the moment given sales climate.

Little Mix - I do think not releasing their third album in Q4 this year could have proven fatal for them, I suppose we'll see but they can't really afford to go that long without releasing anything and miss that opportunity.

Neon Jungle - We may hear from them again but I'm doubtful it will do much. They should've just moved on from the album quickly not long after it was released and put out something new/better than what they had on the album to try and keep themselves afloat.

Fifth Harmony - 'Sledgehammer' looks like outperforming 'Bo$$' in the US and could even do well, so who knows?

The Saturdays - They will never ever get to release anything again, that is for definite.

G.R.L. - I think 'Lighthouse' could prove to be huge for them, but time will tell.

G.R.L. all the way as "the" girlband. Ugly Heart is doing so well over here still and Lighthouse sounds promising! Saying that I love pretty much most of the big girl groups at the moment and I don't think Neon Jungle/Little Mix/The Saturdays are bringing anything new to girl bands in general. Fifth Harmony at 21 over here yeah it's a bit low but BO$$ is pretty unique compared to what we've heard from the other three over the last 12 months or so!

G.R.L definetly are in the best position right now, Ugly Heart seems to be a genuine hit and had it had further support, could have been even bigger than it was. Providing that Lighthouse is good, it could be a massive hit for them. I could see them potentially enjoying the same success PCD had back in the day.

Fifth Harmony will unfortunately not last too long, and neither will Neon Jungle. They just do not stand out as much as I love them (especially Neon Jungle). The Saturdays will probably not release again I think.

Little Mix could go either way, I could unfortunately see them doing a Boomerang or Elephant with their next lead single though :(. I really hope not. Female X Factor stars seem to have a much quicker expiration date than male ones do for some reason which is annoying.

The Saturdays will definitely release something again. They're recording a new album and they're pretty much paying for it with their endorsement deals. Frankie on Strictly, Rochelle doing presenting and Una doing The Voice (Ireland) is to raise their profiles for the band.

I hope you're right because it'd be a shame for them to end with their last single being a generic dance number.
