Posted March 6, 201411 yr It was always just a matter of "when this game will be adapted into a film" as opposed to "if this game was going to be made into a film" really, wasn't it? http://25.media.tumblr.com/c8661730324064ddc6f366196a5654c2/tumblr_n21733bWjF1r863jjo1_500.jpg One of the biggest video games of 2013, The Last of Us, is officially getting a movie. Screen Gems has just signed to distribute a live action version of the Naughty Dog game and creative director of the game, Neil Druckmann, is writing. Sam Raimi‘s Ghost House Pictures will produce. Deadline broke the news of this deal. Here’s a quote from Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper: Screen Gems’ Brian Dukes and Eric Ling brought this game to my attention insisting we go after it and when I saw the quality of the storytelling, I knew the audience for this project was far greater than just the gaming community and that Neil Druckmann must write the screenplay. I am thrilled that SCEA’s Riley Russell was able to get me in front of Neil and Evan Wells to plead my case. Sam and his team at Ghost House round out the perfect team to help realize Neil’s vision. The dramatic action game, which was released last summer for PlayStation 3, follows a young man named Joel who escorts an important girl named Ellie across a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies and other unpleasantness. Think Children of Men meets The Walking Dead, with a little The Professional thrown in. Fans of the game will be happy Druckmann is writing the script and having Sam Raimi attached is a dream too. Screen Gems distributing the film, though, isn’t as big a surprise. The game was a Sony PlayStation exclusive and the parent company began to register URLs for the movie late last year. This is a production everyone knew was coming for a long time. Here’s the full press release: "Screen Gems will distribute the live action film THE LAST OF US based on the critically-acclaimed PlayStation®3 exclusive video game, developed by Naughty Dog. Neil Druckmann, the Creative Director for the game, will also write the script for the film. On behalf of Naughty Dog, the project will be produced by Co-Presidents’ Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra, as well as Creative Director Neil Druckmann and Game Director Bruce Straley, along with Sam Raimi via their Ghost House Pictures banner."SOURCE: http://www.slashfilm.com/the-last-of-us-movie/ I've still not played the game myself, but I have seen some play through's of it and it looks like the most beautiful game ever made (visually). I am interested in the film, but more often than not, game to film adaptations really do FAIL to deliver the goods, so I'm a bit hesitant about this. Still waiting for this 'Assassin's Creed' film though! :arrr:
March 6, 201411 yr Thought this would happen for some time, especially with Sony registering the domain last year. If they get this right, it could be massive. It's the best game I've ever played. The world is spectacular. I'd rather get a direct/non-direct sequel game, but guess that might take a little longer if Neil Druckmann is working on the script. The problem is it's all the little things that made the game so spectacular, that I'm not sure the film would be able to re-create. However the story is the key to the game and it's what makes it such a good game. Josh Brolin to play Joel please.
March 7, 201411 yr i'm about half way through playing this, and every time i go on it i can imagine it being a film :D and i did think 'i wonder if they'll ask ellen page to play ellie' too :heehee:
March 7, 201411 yr Ellen Page is far too old to play Ellie, and think there's already been some tension with her in regrards to the project. Someone like Chloe Grace Moretz woud be good, Still think Josh Brolin is the perfect Joel.
March 8, 201411 yr Ah IDK how to feel about this! The Zombie narrative feels SO overused right now in tv/cinema! It's an incredible, incredible game but I feel like the fact that it was a game was what made it so powerful to me? Obviously it could be really strong, but I just have mixed feelings tbh. IA with Rooney that I'd rather just have a sequel/spiritual successor to the game and not a film... Has there ever really been a *good* movie based on a game? There's a bunch I find fun in a campy way (Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, etc.) - but the formula just never seems to work. Edited March 8, 201411 yr by Mariah Scary

July 26, 201410 yr So this has had OFFICIAL confirmation and Sam Raimi has been in talks with 'Game Of Thrones' star, Maisie Williams, to play the lead female role! She would be a really, really good choice. She's got the tom-boy look, the cheek, wit and to play Ellie. Would really be like The Hound and Arya Stark haha.
