What are sales like in Australia?

Single & album certifications are: Gold = 35k, Platinum = 70k. As others have said they very rarely release sales but lots of songs get at least some sort of certification, so I would hazard a guess at sales being a tad stronger than they are in France (where a #1 sells around 12k on average). Which isn't terrible for the population of Australia!

Sales are much larger than that, the number one regularly sells more than 30k, I think Happy sold about 37,000 a few weeks ago. I still remember how bad when sales were in 2006 where the #1 would barely sell 5,000. I do have some archives sales of #1s somewhere which I could post if someone is interested (nothing from the last few years though). I do remember Gangnam Style selling close to 70,000 one week and One Direction debuted at #2 with 57,000, which was the highest sale for a #2 back in 2012.

I'd like to see a list!

Feels a bit ridiculous that you can get a Platinum certification in one week though

I don't remember what the numbers were for Psy/One Direction, but I think they were a bit higher. I remember at the time that both singles sold the most that anything had sold in a week since Anthony Callea back in 2004 :o Fair to say that "Live While We're Young" is one of the unluckiest #2s ever :P

Also some vague approximations of sales expectations in Oz in recent times:

#1 - 30-40,000

#10 - 12,000

#40 - 5,000

#50 - 4,000

#100 - 1,200

For albums it's about a quarter of that.

Is there a reason certifications are so low, then? Have they just not adjusted them since sales pick up?

Just noticed Gabrielle Aplin Top 10 on iTunes.

I presume there's no John Lewis in Aus (but I see they deliver), so she's doing well

Jessica cracking the top 20  hopefully she can do it officially too for a 2nd top 20 this era - it's bizarre that To The End Of The Earth only peaked at #21.

I didn't actually realise Jessica was still relevant somehow :o After 'Gotcha' kinda flopped I assumed she was on the way out, but I see I've missed a #2 hit since? :o Impressive.

She's really not as big as she was at her peak in the Been Waiting era, or even as big as Get 'Em Girls but Pop A Bottle was pretty big and I'm quite surprised Never Be The Same is looking like being a top 20 hit!

Such a shame To The End Of The Earth didn't make top 20, glorious song

Apparently "The Power Of Love" benefits from its use in an ad for the forthcoming TV series Resurrection...the video for that is on her Youtube channel.

Great chart this week! Pleased to see "Shot Me Down" up to #3 and Jess Mauboy with a nice debut.

My best guess is that they've just been like that so long that it would be weird to change them now. It's probably a good thing though, as any transition would be messy, and in general the excess accreditations make up for the lack of publicly available sales figures. It'd probably be a bit late to do so anyway with sales peaking in 2011 ("Party Rock Anthem" is 13xPlatinum) and so compared to then, the accreditations don't seem so ridiculous! Sorry for rattling on, I rarely get a chance to discuss these matters.

13x platinum but less than 1,000,000 sold. That seems strange

Don't apologise :o It's very interesting to hear about stuff like this and I wish it happened more! In general I think record certifications around the world should be a lot more fluid than they are, even the UK could use an adjustment in my opinion.

It's certainly very interesting imo as it shows how artists actually do in the countries that rarely give out sales.

I'm glad quite a lot are giving out certifications, but some don't give out any at all which seems weird *cough*myflopcountry*cough*

Does Holland really never give out certifications? :o I know 21 is 9x Platinum over there but in general I don't know much about it. So many European countries have terribly managed charts and it just gets worse once you go further east and all the charts turn into "airplay charts" :drama:

The only thing I ever see certified are Dutch artists. And 21 and Beyoncé. That's all i know off. I think they need to apply for that and obviously worldwide superstars don't care for an insignificant certification from here.

Every country needs the certifications like the UK does now
