I *love* Que Sera so I'm very pleased to see it getting 7 weeks, it's better than many #1s the UK has had this year imo.

Happy to see the climbs for both 5SOS and The Vamps this week too. :heehee:

I think Sony are just notoriously dodgy with how they promote their artists; they seem incredibly reluctant to put out albums if there's even the slightest chance it might bomb, so I think Guy Sebastian & Jess Mauboy are the only ones who can get away with actually putting one out. They're especially bad with X Factor contestants, after 5 seasons, only 1 winner has put out a non-covers album. Last year's runner up has one out next month, but no news on the winner!

Sony is a really dodgy label. Just a few months back, they made the headlines for paying their artists like shit with streaming and sales royalties. With X Factor cases, Samantha Jade (2012 winner) was supposed to have her album released, but that went nowhere (as of now). She released one top ten single and the next two singles which basically were not big hits to Sony's expectations. I know she has legal issues with her old management company, but didn't think it would drag out that long. Dami (2013 winner) released a song, but people weren't too aware of it. Bella (2012 Top 4) released two songs and it's a shame that they didn't make an impact at all (especially Forgot You). However, this is Sony - the label with a history of screwing their artists over (I know other major labels have that stigma too, but Sony really takes the cake here), so it's no surprise that Sony Australia are shady also.

If anything X Factor has one leg on The Voice Australia though is that, the alumni from X Factor got some sort of music release. I don't recall any of The Voice winners or finalists releasing anything outside covers. I don't think Universal (The Voice label) are that confident about promoting The Voice contestants beyond the show as well. I only hear of them doing showcases and cover concerts from time to time.

So true on The Voice, though I get the feeling that they initially thought they really were onto something (possibly misguided by the S1 Finale induced sales), that they waited a whole year so they could get Karise to plug her new song on The Voice, with an ad placement lined up...but then no one took to it and I guess they gave up and made Harrison just do a Mother's Day album

  Poor Harrison. It made sales, but still that must be embarrassing for any new artist to go through. When I saw an ad for his concert at Crown in Melbourne (which is kind of Vegas-y), I felt sorry for him. Granted, the ticket prices must have been decent, but it's not like shows at Crown have that much seating, let alone if he gets any profit from it at all.

Jesus, is the Australian music industry really that horrible to its artists? I never thought Jessica would be one of the most successful Australians, let alone one of the few ones who can easily get an album out.

Sony Australia seem incredibly poor, so many stifled careers and missed opportunities.

Did J Lo's album chart at all in Australia? Ouch.

Australian artists do seem horribly handled... They just don't get a chance, there's the odd hit every now and then such as Que Sera now but there are so many cancelled albums I've waited and waited for and had them torn away. I think the highest Sia ever peaked prior to Titanium was something like #22 with Clap Your Hands and now she's loved by America (among others), chandelier is a hit

As she's one of my favourites I always say Jessica Mauboy is underrated, but if you think about it she's massive over there by Australia's standards

Interesting to see the huge climbs for 'A Sky Full of Stars' not only in Australia but worldwide, while it languishes in the UK.

Ed hitting #1 was of course inevitable but I'm sad at the drop off for Nicki. Great to see Charli get that push into the top 40, though :D

Some album sales figures!

#1 Ed Sheeran (25,521)

#2 Coldplay (8,638)

#3 Lana Del Rey (5,036)

#4 Frozen (4,231)

#5 360 (3,259)

#7 Mastodon (2,569)

#8 Milky Chance (2,511)

To put it into perspective, Ed Sheeran has the 2nd highest weekly sales for 2014 so far, behind Coldplay who got 34,097, and just ahead of The Amity Affliction who got 24,099.

Is Justice Crew gonna leave #1 anytime soon? :drama:

I imagine 'Que Sera' will be a big UK hit soon, as the last long running Australian #1 that the world hadn't heard of was 'Somebody That I Used To Know' and we all know how that took off.

I hear that "Que Sera" is the longest running #1 in the ARIA era for an Australian act and going back further the last person to do it was Olivia Newton-John in 1978 :o Fantastic achievement for them (and for a fab song too )
Que Sera is almost the song that The Wanted's We Own The Night wishes it could have been. A sort of jaunty knees-up in the pub anthemic boyband song. I wouldn't mind it being big here at all and kudos to them for getting 9 weeks at the top!
Que Sera took a wee while to hit us but I'm head over heels for it! It's rather fab and if it was to cross over to the UK it'd lead a massive wave of Auspop. They are just so on point at the moment with Jess, Justice Crew, Dami and Sammy J among many others.
  • Author
The Australians barely take to half of those artists themselves, I have doubts that 'Que Sera' would lead to any sort of "Oz invasion".

Auspop is already doing well here this year with Sia, 5 Seconds of Summer and Pnau all grabbing big hits.

As much as I love the likes of Super Love and a lot of Samantha Jade/Jess Mauboy's songs, I don't think they're offering anything new that would make Radio 1 likely to get on board. Whereas Sia and Pnau have the credibility factor and 5SOS have the teen fanbase, and are filling a niche in the mid-point between a boyband and a punk-pop band.

I'm not sure if I can imagine Justice Crew getting a push here but I'm sure it would do well if it did as it is a little different, essentially a fun. song with a rap section.

What's with Kylie's Greatest Hits only charting now? Wasn't it released over a year ago?
I'm highly skeptical of Justice Crew internationally, just because it has the same tacky sound of most DNA Songs productions that I suppose work here, but seem really cheap compared to international counterparts. That and the fact that the success here is so forced, with it being forever discounted on iTunes here, being flogged on every promo & tv show, with this week being the most blunt: They released an acoustic version & remix (both discounted), and when they realised that Sia might get the #1 this week, they announced on Thursday morning, a competition which involves getting the receipt from your purchase of the song which conveniently closed midnight that night, ie. the cut off for the week's chart. It's showing that they're milking every sale they can out of it, since it's doing so poorly on streaming, #19 this week and behind year old "Riptide" Even so, its sales have been pretty mediocre just like the song for how long its been at #1, it'll be lucky to sell over 20,000 copies this week, which (if it's #1 again) would be like the first time in over 3 years that the #1 sales have been so low.

It might have got a soft release back then but only got a full release with promotion last week.
