Oh, put up the price of downloads. That'd quit all these shitty songs selling a million on trickle sales. :P

That wasn't the point that popchartfreak was making as you know. I know it was rather an off the cuff remark but ENGAGING in the dialogue would be a better approach to take here! :D

Oh Madonna fans you wouldn't be moaning if some of Madonna's old stuff was trickle selling well but it doesn't.

What is fact is Madonna doesn't have a million selling single, the 'Queen of pop' doesn't have what most music followers consider the holy grail.

You can make any artist look bigger than any other artist with arbitrary rules for sales that 'should be excluded'.

I'm not really a fan of either. I just think the way it is,is like comparing apples and oranges. In the madonna era, featured artists were a rarity and there was no downloads, so album tracks didnt sell. So if you excluded those things with Rhianna it would be fairer comparison

How are you speaking on behalf of "most music followers"?

Easily Madonna but Rihanna has been insanely successful over the past few years and although I don't doubt she'll continue she doesn't really have the artistry of Madonna and hasn't had a cultural impact on Madge's level.

Anyway Britney's the real queen!

Britney has never really been a contender for 'queen of pop', really she's been the new Janet Jackson pre-breakdown, post-breakdown essentially gay interest.

Titty:

That was meant to be a joke btw.

Why do you think the OCC announce every new million seller on twitter?

Tbh million selling status has been devalued in recent years. Price Tag is a million seller FFS.

Price Tag and Jessie J were huge at one point. Of course certain artists fall out of favor and sometimes never replicate a success again. I don't like price tag but cant deny for a while it was huge.

As is "The A Team".

'Price Tag' and 'The A Team' were both MASSIVE hits so I'm not really seeing the point here  It is easier to get a million seller now than it was a decade or so ago, yes, but that doesn't 'devalue' the mark IMO. A song still needs to be a huge hit to get there.

It's more accurate to say that the low sales years did the opposite of devaluing the million sales mark.

Why do you think the OCC announce every new million seller on twitter?

Because their 89,000 followers want to know. That's hardly most music lovers.

And there's no evidence that even all those twitter followers are that bothered about sales figures (particularly of old songs); I expect most of them are more concerned about this week's charts
Doesn't the fact that it's easier devalue it, even if it's just a small devaluation?
It is devalued compared to the mid-00s, but then at that time it was practically impossible to do it without being for charity or being from reality TV so I'm sure we'd all rather not go back to those days. I think getting a million seller has just gone back to the same 'difficulty' as it was before.

With unlimited downloads at the time of impact, not really no. the A Team limping past a million 18 months after release isn't as impressive as songs that do it within a few months. Songs have much bigger shelf lives now and though the same can be said for all songs in history, the older songs aren't getting the airplay and promotion the newer ones get. Getting a million seller has never been easier.

That is just a biased opinion. You can easily argue that now there is more competition than ever. When Madonna was releasing singles she would always be stocked and be one of only 20/40/50 cd singles in shops to buy. Now the music buyer can buy any song they like.

This whole thread is a biased opinion and should be locked before the stupidity gets any worse. This is just a stan war.

Not if you don't stan for either artist it doesn't.
