Possibly. Although, I think he's the kind of act whose appeal doesn't depend on any sort of perception of artistic authenticity. People knew him as an X Factor finalist after all, so I can't see how him winning would have resulted in much of a different outcome. As long as the music was the same/similar, I'd like to think he'd still have been successful.

Forgot about that, thanks. Still a bad showing for the release of a good single (IMO).

Olly Murs' biggest advantage is that he doesn't sound like an X Factor contestant. He sounds like someone who had the talent to succeed and just happened to get his big break from the programme.

I actually disagree :P. I think his biggest attribute is his relatability/guy-next-door-ness(!). He's got a fairly mediocre voice but has a load of charisma paired with catchy songs that fit his personality and image. I don't think he's that far removed from the idea of an X Factor contestant, really.

I don't remember Masai but I do remember 21st Century Girls. I didn't think they'd be massive but I thought their career would at least last into the actual 21st Century.

EDIT: Sorry, posted half this in the wrong thread.

But his songs are not the typical X Factor power ballad with the key change and the choir etc. There is little chance of Leona Lewis covering an Olly Murs song. And thank goodness for that.

i woulda thought skrillex would've been much bigger than he is - he was EVERYWHERE for a while and it's weird that never translated into a top 10. and benny benassi.

i think it's a case of music that translates well to druggie nights out / raves etc but is it something you want to sit down and casually listen to? similar thing with early crystal castles

Skrillex is a good example, ask anyone who knows 'Bangarang' to guess where it charted and they'd surely all guess top 10 at least (maybe even number 1). I was sure he'd chart higher than #24 given how known he was even when the Sound of 2012 poll was announced.

Quite a few from 2008 for me - David Jordan, Hot Chip and Sam Sparro I was sure would all get at least one more major hit. I know Hot Chip had been around for a while but 'Ready For The Floor' genuinely seemed like the start of a big era for them. Also when Scooter had that shock #1 album that year, I thought they'd start doing really well with their singles but none of them (in part due to a messed-up release schedule which is a whole other story) charted that highly. 'Jumping All Over the World' did at least spend a fairly long time top 75 for a song that only peaked at #28. Also wasn't expecting them to flop so spectacularly when they returned a year later.

Going back to being a kid, HearSay seemed like they were going to conquer the planet for a while - this being way before the reality TV floodgates opened they stood out so much at the time.

Stooshe obviously come to mind. As well as Amelia Lily.

Here people obviously mention all the female singers that have once charted...

The New Radicals

Estelle

Sweet Female Attitude

Glasvegas

AlunaGeorge (could be too early but not looking good)

Sweet Female Attitude never struck me as the sort of act that would last past one hit. They were essentially two random 20-somethings with no evident personality who had a great song and got lucky!

Agree about New Radicals though, they were essentially the OneRepublic of their era, the singer Gregg Alexander going on to become quite a prolific songwriter for acts like Texas, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Ronan Keating. Quite surprising that he never gave it another go with his band, but perhaps the download era is more forgiving to previous one/two hit wonders than the physical era used to be as songs are now allowed to gather momentum if they get attention from somewhere.

Not really a artist as a whole but I am really surprised how poorly Lily is doing this era, they all sound like hits too so I dont really understand it.

They're just lazy pop songs, and it shows. Catchy but with a forced personality and unintersting or cliched lyrics and topics. It just feels like such a huge step down from everything from her first two eras. They feel try hard and even Lily has admitted she's not a fan of them so it's going to be hard for anyone else to care.

I say this as somebody who used to absolutely ADORE her, I know most people prefer her second album (which IS great) but for me Alright Still is one of the seminal albums of my teenage years, amazing.

Well said!

I think SFA could be big if they debuted now. But in dance genre, you also never know..

Lily Allen doesn't really belong into this conversation.

Their album sampler was E V E R Y T H I N G.

If Westlife had broken up sooner (say circa 2005), I believe Shane Filan could have had a Ronan Keating-like successful solo career.
Yasmin post-'Finish Line'. She's such a stunner as well :(.

I loved Yasmin and the three singles, 'On My Own' was fantastic. I think the gap she left between 'Finish Line' and 'Light Up (The World) was too long though.

I thought Erik Hassle would be a lot bigger than he was in the UK, catchy songs. 'Hurtful' was a tune. The same with Eva Simmons, everyone was talking about her hair when 'This Is Love' came out and IMO she made the song, but not much materialised after that. Shame, I think she could have been a massive popstar.

Robyn was another one - Yes she's had a couple of hits but with how great some of her songs are (more recently as well... 'Indestructible' and 'Call Your Girlfriend', it feels like she should have been bigger.

Also Wynter Gordon! 'Til' Death' and 'Buy My Love' were TUNES. 'Sugar' and 'Dirty Talk' should have peaked higher too IMO.

Edited by Parallel Reality

YES at Wynter Gordon. I thought Dirty Talk would be a huge top 5 hit and she could potentially be a huge star! DT did sell well but nothing else even remotely touched the chart.

And Mini Viva, their debut is probably the best album that never was :(

Though it's worth noting that 'This Is Love' becoming a hit was already long after her initial hype coming to nothing - the prediction thread for 'Silly Boy' remains one of the most ridiculous threads on BuzzJack, with almost unanimous #1 predictions based on it 'sounding like a Lady Gaga song' or something along those lines. Of course the song missed the top 100, rightfully IMO as it was a terrible song  Although it will forever hold the record for having the highest uninflated points total in the BuzzJack Song Contest.

Neon Jungle :basil:
