Born and raised in Barranquilla, she began performing in school, demonstrating Latin, Arabic, and rock and roll influences and belly dancing abilities. Shakira released her first studio albums, Magia and Peligro, in the early 1990s, failing to attain commercial success; however, she rose to prominence in Latin America with her major-label debut, Pies Descalzos (1996), and her fourth album, Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998). Shakira entered the English-language market with her fifth album, Laundry Service (2001), which has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Its lead single, "Whenever, Wherever", became the best-selling single of 2002. Her success was solidified with her sixth and seventh albums Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 (2005), the latter of which spawned the best-selling song of the 21st century, "Hips Don't Lie". Shakira's eighth and ninth albums, She Wolf (2009) and Sale el Sol (2010), received critical praise but suffered from limited promotion due to her strained relationship with label Epic Records. Her official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", became the biggest-selling World Cup song of all time. With over 550 million views, its music video is the eighth most-watched video on YouTube. Since 2013, Shakira has served as a coach on the American version of The Voice, having appeared in two of its six seasons. Shakira has won many awards including five MTV Video Music Awards, two Grammy Awards, eight Latin Grammy Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, twenty-eight Billboard Latin Music Awards and has been Golden Globe-nominated. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and she is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, having sold a total of 125 million records worldwide, over 70 million albums and 55 million singles. Her U.S. album sales stand at 9.9 million. Outside of her work in the music industry, Shakira is also involved in philanthropic activities through charity work and benefit concerts, notably her Pies Descalzos Foundation, her performance at the "Clinton Global Initiative" created by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and her invitation to the Oval Office by President Barack Obama in February 2010 to discuss early childhood development. In 2013, Shakira was listed on Forbes as one of the 100 most powerful women in the world. - Wikipedia Chart history (Year peak title): Shakira 2002 02 Whenever Wherever -1- 2002 03 Underneath Your Clothes -2- 2002 17 Objection (Tango) -3- 2006 09 Don't Bother -1- 2006 01 Hips Don't Lie (Shakira Featuring Wyclef Jean) -2- 2006 34 Illegal (Shakira Feat. April 6, 201412 yr Pleasing position for Shakira, higher than Did It Again managed as the second single from her last English language era! Empire has grown on me hugely with the video and The Voice performance, such an odd sound for her though, so Tori Amos. Not the sort of sound we hear in the chart in 2014 usually at all!
April 6, 201412 yr I like this Shakira song but if only it was a certain other 'Empire' in the chart... 5_9BOFtwvZc #bjsclxihype
April 6, 201412 yr Shakira's vocals sounds so good on this and it all leads up to an explosive finale but I think it's some of the lyrics that put me off being totally on board with this.
April 6, 201412 yr Shakira getting a post-album top 40 hit :o Get dat relevance! Another good song from her anyway, quite different to her other songs which is nice to hear
April 6, 201412 yr "Empire" has grown on me massively. Good to see The Voice performance boosted it into the top 30!
April 6, 201412 yr I like this Shakira song but if only it was a certain other 'Empire' in the chart... 5_9BOFtwvZc #bjsclxihype Yes please  Would love this to be a chart hit, it'll never happen though :(
April 6, 201412 yr (40) Kristen Bell-Do You Want to Bill A Snowman 2 UK top 40 hits for the "Frozen" soundtrack. Not bad for a Disney movie.
April 6, 201412 yr Did will.i.am perform this on The Voice or is this just climbing because of his presence on the show?

April 6, 201412 yr There's something very Fleetwood Mac about that HAIM chorus...... I have seen a lot of Fleetwood Mac comparisons re: HAIM. Second album to be their 'Rumours' please! (Just ignoring the fact Fleetwood Mac had a ton of flop albums prior to their big success)
