I've just finished re-watching Chasing The Saturdays and as Living For The Weekend is pretty much over, I thought this would be a good discussion to have: Should the girls have tried going global sooner?

Really, in my opinion, they left this way too late on in their career. I'd have done the following which is basically have the states behind a campaign to the UK i.e. we'd be ahead by one era:

1) After finishing the Headlines! tour in early March 2011, fly over to LA to film Notorious in March instead of April.

2) While in the states, promote for a release of an American version of Headlines!/titled release with Higher OR Ego as lead and the other as the second single.

3) Run the American campaign from middle of March right through until August - only flying back out for the big performance of "Notorious" and finishing On Your Radar.

4) Return to the UK in early August to film All Fired Up/My Heart Takes Over, making trips in between filming back to the states to continue promo.

5) Once OYR ended, focus on remaining state side to launch OYR with All Fired Up/Notorious as singles there. In due time, What About Us would have happened anyway.

It may only be a year earlier than what originally happened but lets be honest, What About Us is great but they were far more fresh and new in Headlines and before than they ever were.

Thoughts, everyone? :D

They really should have done it with 'Higher'. Flo Rida was on the record and with Notorious and All Fired Up following it would have smashed.

Have been tried? Yes, for crimes against music.

Agreed, Ego as well.

I agree that, if anything, they should have gone with Higher. It's the perfect pop song, has Flo Rida featured, it was very successful over here and the video was shot in the US. If that was successful, it should have been followed with Ego and Headlines would be released. Then the On Your Radar singles are a perfect progression from their.

That would be the perfect plan but would it have worked? I could see them scoring a minor hit but not something that would have made them a household name. What About Us's initial performance on US iTunes showed that it could have done something if it had been added to radio and the group had done more to make it a hit but I do think they missed the boat with earlier releases and, even if What About Us had done well, Gentleman or Disco Love definitely wouldn't have done in the US!

I think you've hit the nail on the head!

I don't think they ever had any intention of global success. They had never bothered promoting outside the UK in four years and I think the only reason they bothered with America was because British artists were blowing up over there. They were absolute idiots for wasting months filming a crappy reality show when they could just have went over and promoted their music and probably had a hit out of it. It was E! who got them their TV appearances and they seemed to have no intention of making 'What About Us' a hit. It was only ever promoted on TV to promote the reality show.

Theyll never go back to America or any other country to promote because they've missed their chance. In 2010/2011 they were the only active girlband, were relevant in the UK and had no babies. Now radio aren't touching them, they've had a ton of flops and they have three kids. I'm afraid their career from here will be endless This Morning and Loose Women appearances, with the occasional song denting the top 500 of the New Zealand iTunes charts or something.

I don't think flops are the reason. I just think they are too far into their careers to launch off anywhere. They're too old (as an act). They always will have a small following in the US who can boost their album into the itunes top 100 but not big enough to keep it there.

I can't remember which album cover it was but inside the booklet I definitely recall reading something about America, possibly from Frankie?

Precisely that, completely agree; Una is approaching her mid 30s which is quite impressive!

They did bother with Asia, though.

I can't believe you basically said they shouldn't have bothered with the only thing, like you said, that got them the slots to perform their music on. As if Peter could get them Jay Leno on his own. You better thank E! for all the opportunities they had in the US and these guys did throw a lot of money on them.

certain people shading the girls. ✔

certain people adding negativity unnecessarily ✔

certain people trying and failing miserably to support the Girls. ✔

give it a by already!!

Of course I'm grateful to E! for getting them the promo and trying to make The Saturdays happen, but it was a one-sided effort. E! were booking them on big TV shows and promoting the hell out of their reality show and The Sats were getting pregnant and their label/management didn't seem to be doing anything to make the music happen. It was like they just took a back seat and let E! do the work for them, then when everything went tits up they just packed it in.
