Ah. thats going to cause my May June 1980 charts a problem to resolve

Just select, for instance, italics in the middle of the word but don't put any text between the tags. Then you can use the word kitchen.

Just catching up with this.

What is all this nonsense about Death Disco?

An absolutely immense record and the perfect post-punk single.

And how good was it that it was played on TOTP for millions of people.

well agree about it being on TOTP, it belonged there and music is the poorer for not having a weekly music show now!

I am reliably informed that after tonight there's no more TOTP on BBC4 until late September due to the Proms and them getting too far ahead now.

So here we go again with an episode from the end of August 1979. There’s a bit of a break after this so we won’t be seeing Christmas in September. Anyway we get a dreary Bellamy Brothers song over the chart.

Secret Affair with something a bit more lively. I’ve got a vague recollection that the run-off was designed so that “This is the time” was repeated ad infinitum.

Oh sear, it’s Dollar with one of their worst efforts. Let’s face it, there better efforts were pretty awful. This is truly abysmal but somehow it got to number four. Twitter joke of the day - “It’s hard to believe that, when Dollar split up, David Van Day went on to become 50 Cent”.

Time for some class with Nick Lowe.

Back to the rubbish with Sister Sledge with Legs & Co caught in a trap.

Worse to follow with the Gibson Brothers wearing matching…. well, matching something.

Bye Bye Tubeway Army, hello and welcome to Gary Numan. Another great tune for his second single.

Johnny Mathis with his last top 40 hit. Maybe When A Child Is Born will be streamed into the top 40 this year. Just one member of Legs & Co (one leg?) because the others have gone gone gone.

From Mathis to The Stranglers. This week’s “only on TOTP” moment.

BA Robertson, the Commodores and The Specials can be seen on the late night repeat. Obviously, many people will watch a recording and skip the Commodores. Unless they are having trouble sleeping.

And it’s Cliff at number one. Apart from Living Doll with The Young Ones all his subsequent number ones were Christmas hits.

Boney M over the credits providing inspiration for Duck Sauce.

Not sure precisely when it’s back. It may not be until after the Proms which means some time in September.

As i'm doing my month by month charts it seems so wrong to be broadcasting an episode I never saw (being as I was in california late Aug/early Sept) in July. These are the songs of mid september for me.

So what did I miss? Pretty damn good episode actually, though Bellamy Brothers need a slap for introducing a hideous pick-up line to the world.

Love Secret Affair, though the track with the endless loop was I Am The Beat, I think....at least I don't think my copy had a loop on it

Dollar, not one of their best, and I saw David Van Day in a hideous stage farce the other year. No, not a Dollar reunion, they were passable last time I saw them :P I suggest googling Cheryl Baker's opinion of DVD for a laugh.

Nick Lowe, brilliant. Sister Sledge, so brilliant it was a bigger hit 5 years later (another one of my personal anthems, lyrically). And again in the 90's.

Gibson Bros, fab, BA Rob fab, Gary Numan classic, Specials classic, Cliff classic, Mathis good, Stranglers good, Boney M good, Commodores a song of my American holiday (presume it's the country-tastic Sail On).

Now That's What I Call A Bloody Great Episode. Pity we didn't have cheap videorecorders in 1979....

Anyways, all of those missing episodes might not be being repeated but I'll be adding any missing greats to my August 1979 charts, coming soon, so just click on links.

I'm sure I Am The Beat had an endless loop. Perhaps my recollection of the same on Time For Action is wrong.

Not necessarily....my memory could easily be flawed!

Not sure precisely when it’s back. It may not be until after the Proms which means some time in September.

Nudge nudge. You didn't read my post before this. ;)

Yes great episode this week. I liked Secret Affair (though I like My World better), Sister Sledge - (as stated its been a top 20 hit three times-such is the talents of Nile Rogers), Nick Lowe and Gary Numan with Cars (also a top 20 hit 3 times!)

If Cliff's arrested I can honestly see the BBC thinking that these repeats are more trouble than they were worth. He had several hits in 1980. The next scheduled repeat is the chart dated 1/9/79 and guess who was No.1?

Wonder if On The Beach, No.9 this week in 1964, will be quietly dropped from POTP tomorrow on Radio 2. He's also in one of next week's featured charts. The guy had so many hits across the decades.

In most cases it will be simple enough just to drop Cliff from the programme. After all, the early evening showing often misses out acts. Obviously that is a little more difficult when he is number one. They may decide that, as long as he hasn't even been arrested, let alone charged with anything, they can show his appearances.
if they drop Cliff it's a case of Media Assuming Guilt again, after all the ridiculous miscarriages of justice where innocent people have been harassed and ridiculed to sell newspapers, I think the BBC would be wise not to appear to be treating as guilty someone who hasn't yet been charged with anything (so far just had the police nosing around and notifying the Sun for a huge publicity-driven "we think he's guilty let's get some more accusers coming forward" scoop). Seem to recall that worked very well with a landlord in Bristol.

Whether Cliff is guilty or not, it might be best if BBC4 stopped showing repeats in order week for week and just jumped ahead. There's surely only so long they'll be able to keep the repeats up for as changes in controllers / government cuts etc. may lead to it being cancelled (or even BBC4 being taken off air a la BBC3).

It would also mean you don't get the same songs on week in, week out if they decided to skip a week due to it being too similar to the previous one.

Well if cliff is found guilty of anything then thats goodbye totps he was never out of the charts between 64 and 06

The 5th Sept. episode, so three weeks behind, but someone says there are only 9 that can be shown before Christmas so will work out okay.
