September 23, 201410 yr DLT Guilty of 1 charge of assault on Mrs Merton Show, cleared of 2nd, undecided of another http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-29331740 Not guilty of Panto Assault http://www.crawleyobserver.co.uk/news/loca...awley-1-6315622 Edited September 23, 201410 yr by Musicmaster
September 23, 201410 yr no more DLT TOTP's I guess that means, guilty of the heinous crime of groping. With apologies to the woman who feels it was like being being punched, I'm just going to say being groped is NOTHING like being punched. I've been groped and I've been beaten up, physically assaulted, it's like comparing chalk and cheese. I know which one is the more scarring to me....
September 24, 201410 yr One charge of groping - alleged to have happened years after any of his episodes were made - is not a valid explanation to block his episodes anymore. Not trying to defend it, but they can't use the same excuse for blocking Savile's episodes with DLT.
September 25, 201410 yr Author We’re back after a summer break and we have reached the beginning of September 1979. An awful start with Frantique over the chart. Ooh, a slightly different start with the first act getting an introduction. And it is The Ruts who get the first full performance. Not great but a vast improvement on Frantique. On to Randy Vanwarmer. It has to be aid that the best thing about him is his name. Even better, it’s almost his real name. He was born Randy van Wormer. Possibly one of the worst attempts to convince us he really is playing that guitar. In a 1970s version of BBC cost-cutting Legs & Co have retrieved the props they used for Another Suitcase In Another Hall. Making their first appearance it’s Madness! Yeah!!! Doesn’t Suggs look young? A change of tempo for some Roxy Music. A second successive song with some sax. Next up, the mind-numbing tedium of The Crusaders. Where’s that mute button? And, of course, it’s another Randy. And yet more sax. It seems to be ELO month on the BBC (not that that’s a bad thing). We’ve already had their Radio 2 concert and now they’re on TOTP with a song that could only be by ELO. No Randy or sax on this one. I never did find out who Bruce was. Bellamy Brothers and Racey have been cut. See them later tonight if you really want to. Back to the novelty names with Bill Lovelady. Boney M next with Barbra Streisand. Sort of. Cliff still at number one. He has survived the cull. A good finish with Flying Lizards over the closing credits. That’s what I want.
September 30, 201410 yr Quote from Jan Leeming: " I was a professional dancer in the 1970's, appearing on Top of the Pops for a year .It was the fashion to wear a dress so short that any slight movement meant one's underwear could be seen. I would wear knickers over my tights that matched my dress, as it was expected that the cameramen would try to get shots of these while we dancers gyrated on a platform .We dressed provocatively to get noticed. I can remember that if the DJ or one of the production team didn't make a pass or pinch my bottom there was a feeling that I was not attractive. I did not find it offensive - I am of the era when you were flattered if a builder whistled at you . I am in no way endorsing inappropriate behaviour, but for the 'carnival princess' who accused Dave Lee Travis of assaulting her to say she has suffered '40 years of hell' is hard to believe. I was fortunate that during my year at TOTP. I do still have the album signed by Tony Blackburn, which was presented to me for winning best dancer. I was invited to the BBC Bar, where even Morecambe & Wise flirted."
October 2, 201410 yr Author So, what treats have BBC4 got is store for us this week? Here we go again with UKIP’s second most famous member presenting. Not a great start with Racey over the chart. Starjets are first in the studio with their number 51 smash. They were not heard from again. That doesn’t seem to have been a great loss. Apparently they included John Terry. Or it might have been John, Terry. It’s Kate Bush!!!!! Whatever happened to her? We’ve skipped a week so Madness are on again. Not that I’m complaining. Oh dear, now we get the Bellamy Brothers. The one in the middle seems to have wandered in from a film set. Ah, that’s better. The Tourists with the wonderful Loneliest Man In The World. Should have been a massive hit but only got to number 32. Still, Dave and Annie went on to do quite well. The Police have a Message In A Bottle. They use mobiles now. Sad Cafe next. I remember the song very well but not that haircut. Rainbow now - never was a fan. ELO - another repeat from last week although we get Legs & Co this time. Any theories about Bruce? Gary Webb (now performing as Gary Numan rather than Tubeway Army) replaces Harry Webb at number one. Only the ninth act (at the time) to top the chart with their first two singles. How times have changed. A naff song for the chart and another one over the closing credits - it’s a (thankfully) brief but of Bill Lovelady.
October 2, 201410 yr Didn't know Starjets were from Belfast(Béal Feirste in irish if you want) RIP Paul Young singer of Sad Café, he has been gone 14 years this year. He died too young, 53.
October 3, 201410 yr From the Tourist onwards was great! For those interested the 8 previous acts to have their first two hits goto no.1 were 1 Stargazers 2 Tennessee Ernie Ford 3 Adam Faith 4 Gerry & The Pacemakers 5 Mungo Jerry 6 Rod Stewart (Reason To Believe peaked at 19 - however this was the b side of maggie May, which is the same single.) 7 John Travolta 8 Art Garfunkel Not as you may expect, no Beatles, Elvis, Rolling Stones, Slade or any other major chart acts that may first come to mind. 9 Gary Numan Edited October 3, 201410 yr by fiesta
October 9, 201410 yr Author I'll be watching the football tonight so I won't see TOTP until later. If anyone wants to put their comments up then feel free.
October 9, 201410 yr Didn't know Starjets were from Belfast(Béal Feirste in irish if you want) Genuinely true fact - my dad was asked to be the lead singer of The Starjets when they were first starting out at school. He politely declined. The one who did end up being the singer, Terry Sharpe ended up getting a Top 20 singles a few years later as a member of The Adventures, with the fantastic "Broken Land".
October 9, 201410 yr Well Suedehead2 offered it up  The Prince, Madness the rundown and Kid Jensen, ahh a cool DJ from the 70's it's still Ok to like. XTC and the magnificent Making Plans For Nigel, lyrics as relevant today as the day etc etc Still sounds fresh and pretty unique to me.. Next up Blondie in their prime, fond memories of a whole album done pop video stylee for the first time (I think) and Dreaming a great choon. Debbie Harry was THE pop star pin-up amongst lads at college/uni. Matumbi, cool British reggae, Point Of View and one it's great to shuffle along to in your bedroom. Trust me, would I lie to you...? The Buggles. THAT video. That song. MTV-kick-starting synth-pop classic, Trevor Horn (nuff said) and Geoff Downes (Yes!). Brilliant. Everyday Hurts, Sad Cafe, pleasantly sad, though never one of my absolute faves, Paul Young was a good singer though. Squeeze, Jools Holland with 2 guest vocalists..err just kidding, Chris and Glenn are terrific songwriters, together or solo, but especially together. A great live band (or solo) to boot. Slap n Tickle was a great little gem of a single, who wouldn't enjoy a bit of slap n tickle, I mean, really.... Legs n Co are no substitute for goddess Kate. At the very least they could have worn inappropriate fat body suits (err Them heavy People..? No? Suit yerself) The Jags, one-hit wonders, and the very Elvis Costello-a-like Back Of My Hand, a catchy lil ditty I was and am partial to. Number One: Message In A Bottle. The Police go mega with this single, I get back from 2 weeks in the States and this was suddenly up there. Biggest band at college, give or take Genesis, Floyd, Mac and Abba. Two mates and myself bought the single in adjacent college dorm-room digs and we had a simultaneous needle on the record race to see who's record-player was the most out-of-synch in rpm's. We had no internet in those days, you had to make your own fun.... Finally the end credits is Nick Lowe's wonderful Cruel To Be Kind. Some forget about the "kind" bit though.... :o
October 9, 201410 yr Author Thanks for those observations :D I'm watching it now - Sad Cafe are just finishing - so my ramblings will be up soon. You're right about Blondie. My Debbie Harry poster was next to the Kate Bush one on my bedroom wall in my hall of residence the previous year. Not a deliberate attempt at deception unless I was deceiving myself about my sexuality.
October 9, 201410 yr Author Oh. and  to your comment about the lack of internet. Mind you, my university did have some sort of internal e-mail system. UCL ahead of the game again!
October 9, 201410 yr Author No help from Twitter this week as I’m watching a recording but here goes. Another chance to hear early Madness but it’s only a short clip over the chart this week. Oh, they’ve found a picture of Rainbow rather than a rainbow. XTC in the studio. People of a certain age called Nigel - including a very good university friend of mine - can relive their embarrassment. Damned good song though. The great start continues with Blondie. This quality can’t last can it? If it does, I really will think I’m dreaming. Oh, and another thing, that irritating logo (or DOG to use the technical term) is absent again. It just keeps on getting better. Until now. The long-forgotten (by me at least) Matumbi next. They did the theme tune for a television show but this one, Point Of View, was not used by the programme of (almost) the same name. Possibly because it isn’t very good. On to the Buggles. The aforementioned Nigel loathed this song. I though it was tolerable. Nigle was a Yes fan at the time (we all have our idiosyncrasies) so was horrified when Trevor Horn worked with them. Still, Horn went on to produce Frankie Goes To Hollywood which is now probably his greatest achievement. Mention the Buggles now and people might think it is a name for Jake Bugg fans. Anyway, Sad Cafe are up next. Another indication that we have missed a week again as their haircuts were also on last week. Squeeze are next up. Jools Holland may be an irritating tit now but Squeeze put out some great singles in their day. Actually, he was a bit of a tit then but was at least kept in the background most of the time. And at least his hair was its natural colour. It’s Kate again! Sadly we have to put up with a typically rubbish Legs & Co routine. And so now it’s The Jags. A bit like The Knack from a few months before and with a similar chart history. The Police in their second week at number one. I won’t shed any tears about missing the first. It’s something about a ness-o-ess. I suppose that means it has to be called a monster hit. Nick Lowe over the credits. I thought I’d save a bit of time by watching a recording but I haven’t skipped anything in its entirety.
October 10, 201410 yr Another good show this week. Legs & Co looked as if they had slept in for TOTP and didnt have time to get dressed before coming to the studio :o But I'm not complaining :D For those who like facts, Matumbi included Dennis Bovell, also a songwriter/producer who wrote and produced the lovers rock hit Silly Games by Janet Kay. October 18, 201410 yr One charge of groping - alleged to have happened years after any of his episodes were made - is not a valid explanation to block his episodes anymore. Not trying to defend it, but they can't use the same excuse for blocking Savile's episodes with DLT. Apparently there's an interesting 3 page story on Jimmy Savile in the Mail On Sunday tomorrow which has got the anti-yewtree brigade very excited.
October 18, 201410 yr Apparently there's an interesting 3 page story on Jimmy Savile in the Mail On Sunday tomorrow which has got the anti-yewtree brigade very excited. just read it. pretty damning of the police force and the system of anonymity, seems fairly factual based as opposed to vague 10-year-spans of claims that can easily be refuted in lots of cases by alternative facts - it's entirely reliant on the police force doing it's job, the same one that has apparently lost Savile's 20-years-worth of diaries. Meantime, legal fees are soaking up his £3m pound estate leaving little for any actual claimants that may have a good case, except those going for compensation from the taxpayer. That's about the gist of it...

October 21, 201410 yr Excellent article by James Masterton on the banning of TOTP episodes http://www.masterton.co.uk/2014/10/condemned-to-revise-it/
October 22, 201410 yr good article, pretty much says it all, though I'd add in also double standards with acts such as R Kelly (who irrefutably married a 15-year-old) and Jerry Lee Lewis (married his 14-year-old cousin) who get no stick at all - R Kelly is getting loads of airplay right now, end of the day he (by the laws of the UK) would be branded a paedophile, convicted, presumably found guilty and banished from the airwaves. Aaliyah's not around to testify of course, but the hypocrisy of the BBC is laughable. That's apparently fine because he avoided conviction, while being convicted of a grope is enough to be banished forever from history. Pathetic. Cold-blooded killers are fine because theyve served their sentence for their crime, but a grope is forever unforgivable even after the sentence is over. The BBC need to examine their wildly-flayling knee-jerk moral decision-making process.
