I'll Take The Cat Crept In over the fab Love Cats.

Cool For cats? The Siamese Cat Song?

Fridays episode was fab, lots to love, Banging Simple Minds, Style Council, Tina Turner, and others!

Adam Ant is in Bournemouth on Saturday - hopefully he will drop one of the worst Cat Songs, Puss In Boots. Donald Trump's ears may prick up at the title though.

Another skipped episode takes us up to the second programme of December 1983 so it’s nearly Christmas. Mike Read and Tommy Vance are our hosts. Read looks like a twat. What’s new?

We get underway with the Thompson Twins so it’s a good start for once.

Oh dear, a chance for Read to be racist.

Anyway, it’s on to Billy Joel with the follow up to his number one.

Paul Young and Tina Turner have been cut.

We’ve had Billy Joel who wrote and recorded Just The Way You Are. Here are Tears For Fears with The Way You Are. Frankly, it’s some way short of their best. Curt Smith recorded an album under the name Mayfield, allowing him to say Curt Is Mayfield.

Chart time.

Howard Jones in questioning mood.

More chart.

Back to songs following a number one, here are Culture Club with a Christmassy video and another silly hat. Damned good song though.

On to the top ten rundown and we have a fabulous new number one from the Flying Pickets. I think we can assume the surviving members won’t be voting for Theresa May’s Team.

Wham close the programme.

Ah thanks!

Just watching the 80s most shocking moments of ch5 and one moment was Divines appearence performing I Think Your a Man. Have we passed that episode?

Thanks!

Is Relax in the lower part of the chart in late 1983 at the time? Heard it peaked at 67 or something at this time before the push in January 84!

Yes, it's in the chart "by now". It entered in early November 1983 and climbed steadily before entering the top 40 in January 1984. I'm not sure whether it was played on TOTP before the BBC (aka UKIP's Mike Read) banned it.

Wonder if they ban it on these repeats?! The totps performance isn't until Jan 84 so should be shown in the next month or so!

Wonder how it charted, did it get random spot plays?

I'm sure it was never on TOTP when it was number one but I can't remember whether it was on before that. If it was on, I'm sure they'll show it now. For the sake of ccuracy they will have to leave subsequent appearances out of the repeats :(

On that 80s moments programme I was watching they showed a totps clip with all the flags in the studio etc so it must have been performed at some stage. Think it had the 20th anniversary banner in the background during the performance?!

Yes it was on before it reached No.1 according to Popscene and am sure they'll show it now. Think it's the 20th anniversary one which also has clips of old songs and is not Yewtreed.

Edited by common sense

2 missing TOTP editions from 1975 have been found inclu the 600th edition from October and 17/07/1975 edition

unfortunately both are presented by DLT which means they are unlikely to be shown unless the BBC do a u-turn

Most likely option would be a special edition of TOTP2

600th edition is a DLT one 9-10-75: Presenter: Dave Lee Travis (600th TOTP) (Wiped)

fab news!

I def want to see the John Miles, Hello, Sparks, & early Sister Sledge performances again. Most of the others are around in one guise or another I think, except maybe Smokey.

My memory says the TOTP orchestra ruined the Susan cadogan & Chris farlowe ones though. T.Rex was also a bit off. Probably very faulty memory though!

I'm quite happy to live the rest of my life without seeing the Sister Sledge performance.

On this lovely spring day we get the last Top Of The Pops before 1983’s Christmas show. Our hosts are the dynamic duo of John Peel and David Jensen. Someone seems to have locked their fancy dress box this week.

We kick off with Slade’s Christmas classic re-released on its tenth anniversary. Norman may have had the odd Christmas sherry.

Back to 1983 now with Culture Club and one of their best songs.

The Tears For Fears repeat has been cut.

The Billy Joel repeat, on the other hand, survives.

Something fresh - but awful - next. Before soap actors started recording singles we had Dennis Waterman and George Cole. It’s actually even worse than I remembered.

Chart part one.

Paul McCartney with a bit of whimsy, We even get the introductory bit of the video. the song runs out before the video can show Germany winning on penalties.

Chart - the next bit, complete with Peelian wit.

Howard Jones with another repeat. Shame he hasn’t had time to get changed after doing the decorating.

The top ten starts with Cliff Richard, Tina Turner and Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton. Even in 1983 they had a combined age of around 749.

The chart rundown ends with the classy Christmas number one from the Flying Pickets. No snowman suits this week. However, somebody somewhere wants to know who emptied their bean bag.

We end with some utter rubbish from Roland Rat. Why?

Merry Christmas.

Strange to think at that period no one had heard of xmas songs from Mariah Carey, The Pogues, Wham and Band Aid (tho not long for the last two)!

Was the xmas day episode we always miss just songs of the year or a new episode?

B

Just watched the episode from before xmas 1983 there with The Pretender performance of 2000 Miles, such an underrated classic! Pity that performance didn't take them into the top 10!!

Also is it just me or are the no1s spending longer than normal at the top spot - Karma Cameleon 6 weeks, Uptown Girl 5 weeks & Only You set for 5 weeks and we have Frankie in 1984!! Was there a reason for this?
