May 10, 201411 yr The problem is nobody with half a career will touch it - It doesn't even guarantee a UK hit and record deal representing us anymore! Although it has at least for Molly which is some consolation I suppose!
May 10, 201411 yr I don't want to be all dramatic but I'm not sure where the UK goes from this? It almost feels as if we will never get an ESC Top 10 again at this point! I'm sure the Netherlands said this at multiple points in the past
May 10, 201411 yr In all fairness, without sounding like a typical "it's political" Brit because I hate that, we should just give up. Or Maybe try a classy ballad like Jade Ewen again, worked for Austria obviously, plus Sweden and to a lesser extent Norway.
May 10, 201411 yr Oh god, please. There is such an obsession with the UK being hated by other countries. Truth is we don't care, we vote for songs we like, not for countries. And should I remind you all that UK music is all over the continent and all over our radios, so if anything it proves that when it comes to music, we are pretty much open to the UK. That's not the truth at all. There is quite clearly a huge divide. We give it the benefit of the doubt every year, but to have Molly do not much better than Bonnie Tyler is an insult. There's a difference between having songs on the radio in Europe and voting for songs in Eurovision! It's pretty much a given that we'll do badly each year. Adele is on the radio worldwide and I'd bet she still wouldn't pull votes. I don't want to believe it, but it's quite evident it's still political. I'm intrigued to know what those who don't think it's political think actually happened tonight? If you think Molly had a good song and gave a good enough performance, what stopped her doing well? There's not much going in favour of that argument. Edited May 10, 201411 yr by Barbaric Scherzy
May 10, 201411 yr I don't want to be all dramatic but I'm not sure where the UK goes from this? It almost feels as if we will never get an ESC Top 10 again at this point! The way we go is to keep sending a good song and eventually we'll get something that stands out. It's not like the top 2 tonight have always had Eurovision success, far from it. Looking back maybe I should have been less sure of Children Of The Universe, I got swept up in the hype a bit, it's biggest crime is that it won't stand out among a large field and so it got lost, particularly so soon after that show-stopping performance from the Netherlands.
May 10, 201411 yr To be fair, I did think Molly's performance tonight was a bit lacklustre and it really needed a bit more power. The staging could've been a bit better as well. That dress?! Delighted Azerbaijan did so badly.

May 10, 201411 yr I'm sure the Netherlands said this at multiple points in the past  I can confirm that there have been numerous protests against competing in it after all those DNQ's

There's not much going in favour of that argument. I don't think that Molly gave her best performance. That's what happened. It did not feel like the showstopper a winner should. I knew in my gut from that we were doomed. Who would pick up the phone in large numbers to vote for that?
May 10, 201411 yr This political thing is absolutely dire. I had a feeling that those people here who wanted UK to win on Buzzjack is due to the fact it represented their country more so than the song itself, and that we didn't send a complete shit song for once so people go "OMG WE MAY HAVE A CHANCE AFTERALL AND LOOK AT THE ODDS!!". It seems like people are more pressed more than anything because of the position we got placed on Eurovision, so they just have to fall back onto some lame political excuse to reassure the 17th position which Molly placed.
May 10, 201411 yr 'Rise Like A Phoenix' is a brilliant winner, 2nd year in a row that one of the best songs has won so I can't complain (and thank GOD it held off the Dutch song). I agree that it'd have done nowhere near as well if it weren't by Conchita but I'd still have been cheering it on. 17th is disappointing for the UK but it's still a better result than Engelbert and Bonnie at least. I do hope we don't give up on trying to send good songs as I do think we will get it right eventually if we stick to what we did with Molly.
May 10, 201411 yr I suppose, in a sense, I shouldn't be surprised. It took me a while to absolutely love Children Of The Universe and that's not taking into account the patriotism that likely made me want it to win. Anyone who just watches on the night doesn't have that growth time, nor are they British. I still thought it'd AT LEAST be on the left hand side, gutted for Molly. :( Think you're right. I'm gutted for Molly and gutted for me - not only doi I love the song to bits, I'm now £25 down on a bet cos she didn't go onto the left-hand side of the board! I'm going to stop betting on the UK! Doh :o
May 10, 201411 yr I never really got into Children of the Universe as a song, I got caught up in the hype a little bit, but I thought the winning predictions were always a bit extreme. I did fear, with us performing last, she'd underperform a bit tonight, and looking back, the performance just wasn't strong enough. I am surprised it didn't connect, considering it did seem far more contemporary than our previous entries but hey ho. I don't think this is the end for us per se as long as we stick to a similar formula, we got top 5 just five years ago so it's not like we're immune from success, it's just...gonna be hard to know where to go from here. May 10, 201411 yr I didn't watch the final, but I cannot at Austria winning. It was well sung, but that was it :( Polska 14th? :cheer:
May 10, 201411 yr Well, I'm absolutely distraught at the UK's outcome tonight. I really REALLY thought we had top 5 on lock. I can't answer what went wrong because I really don't know. I just HOPE the BBC don't go back to sending any old shit and put some effort in to it again. But I'm delighted for Conchita, it really was a stunning performance and after 49 years, who can begrudge an Austrian win!

Who would pick up the phone in large numbers to vote for that? Exactly this. After the performance I had a real gut feeling that was our top 5 chance gone, so I wasn't hugely surprised at the underperformance :( I did think 7th-11th was possible still though so it is still pretty gutting.
May 10, 201411 yr I was literally crying when it was obvious Austria won. Best. Year. Ever. I'm going back next year there's just no doubt about it. Dying

There's not much going in favour of that argument. But why of all countries we would hate the UK? If anything the UK is a pretty cool country and everyone my age (20-30) sees the UK as a great country and a great destination to visit (HELLO LONDON)! The whole "out of EU" thing doesn't work either, considering how much people inside the EU want to see their country get out of the Union at the moment  My question is, why would there be a political vote AGAINST the UK? You're not more isolated than Switzerland or Iceland for example.
May 10, 201411 yr I won't lie, I'm really really disappointed with how Molly did, she did a superb job and the song is amazing and now the BBC are going to send some Godawful old hasbeen again next year
