Global will integrate data from YouTube, streaming services and social media in its Vodafone Big Top 40 chart this summer.

The new data will be combined with downloads and radio airplay in a bid to “more accurately reflect the way people listen to and engage with music today,” according to the company.

“More and more people consume music and interact with music on many platforms including downloads, streaming services, YouTube, social media and radio,” said Global founder and executive president Ashley Tabor.

“The new chart that reflects how people listen to music and interact with music in 2014 and beyond. With the new Vodafone Big Top 40, however our listeners are getting their music fix, we’re there and we’re counting their music choices and we will continue to add new relevant data sources as consumption and interaction habits continue to evolve.”

Presented by Marvin Humes, The Vodafone Big Top 40 draws more than 2.4 million listeners from 4-7pm on Saturdays. 2014 is the chart’s fifth birthday.

I'm a real traditionalist - I think only sales should count...

You do realise this is the "Big Top 40" yes?

will be interesting to see how this affects the chart, I think they should take airplay out of it as well as the streaming addition but I doubt it

(and before you ask I do realise this isn't the official chart)

I think they already did remove airplay a while ago without anyone really noticing.
Looking at the latest Big Top 40, it looks like they still use Global airplay as well as iTunes data, otherwise how would Idina Menzel be so low and OneRepublic still top 40 for example? I also wish they wouldn't do the 'top 10 on iTunes at 6PM on Sunday evening is the top 10' business.

But that makes it interactive and they are using modern technology!!1!

Of course they won't play anything that isn't still adult contemporary, unless it's in the top 10 and they have to. I'd imagine it'll make the chart even more confusing and songs will fly up and down the charts while the show's on more often.

Although yay at them getting another opportunity to brag about how they are ahead and how they're better than everyone etc.

I would like them to add "likes" on Facebook and also any tunes that I'm humming in my head- then I MAY start listening to it......
Looks like they have lost .3 million listeners, at 1 point they were up at 2.7 million listeners, Perhaps Jameela Jamil is doing a good job brining listeners back to the Radio 1 Chart, shame we don't know the current Rajar figures.

Why do they say it's only presented by Marvin when there's some woman with him as well? It's the same on their website

Anyway I don't really care what they do because how can anyone take a chart seriously that is based on one thing for 11-40 and another thing for the top 10? It renders the whole chart meaningless and the only reason they do it is to appear a week ahead of Radio 1.

It's a shame that with this, and singles being released on Sundays, the official chart is now out of date even before it is announced!

It's Kat Shoob, the original presenter that teamed up with Rich Clarke in June 2009 when it started.

Often they play a starter Top 10 that is not the 4 pm update that the claim, it's probably the Top 10 as of 2 pm or 3 pm or between 12 & 4 pm, so you could be listening and they say "This is the Top 10 Right Now", you look at their website and see a Top 10 on the front page totally different. you say to yourself, no it isn't, your website says so.

In the days of the Nescafe Network chart between 1984 & 1987, they were ahead of the Official chart then the sales stopped by say Thursday or Friday, so as to give Kid Jensen a Top 30 to countdown on Sunday, whilst Radio 1 were counting down a repeat of a 5 day old chart, The network chart then is an equivalent to a Thursday or Friday Midweek chart now.

Given that the Official Chart is a weekly chart then it is not out of date when it is announced. It is a list of the best-selling records in the previous seven completed days. The Big Top 40 doesn't cover a whole week so does not qualify as a weekly chart regardless of what they do and do not count

Only not quite because the major chains such as Woolworths were under exclusivity deals with Gallup so their sample base was missing around 30-40% of the market on any given week.

Just had a thought, The Big Top 40 are doing now what BBC Radio 1 done only 1 week or 2, then abandoned the Idea because it was naff, claiming the chart is still being compiled as they are on air, if you are old enough to remember, back in October 1987, Bruno was claiming on the First Sunday chart, that it was still being compiled as he was on air, they soon abandoned the Idea of saying "There is some movement in the Top 10 at the moment" and other claims, really they had the chart at 12:30 pm that day already.

I know that, but you have to admit that already having a pretty good idea of what next week's top 10 is going to look like before Radio 1 have announced this week's is a bit odd.

It's interesting, but surely this is a bit risky? The Big Top 40 Show clearly favours adult contemporary and pure pop music (I honestly think the whole point of them including airplay in it is to keep "safe" songs in the chart, whilst non radio friendly songs will get pushed out unless they're in the top 15 or so in sales). Including streaming would possibly make artists like Arctic Monkeys or Meridian Dan do better in their chart.

Also, this makes it seem more likely that the OCC really are going to add streaming. To me this seems like they know what's going on behind the scenes, and The Big Top 40 Show are rushing to add streaming a couple of weeks before they do in the official chart, so they can claim to be the first to do it?

The Big Top 40 including airplay in its chart since it started never translated to the OCC including airplay so I'm not sure how you come to that conclusion :P

If anything it probably makes it less likely as I don't think the OCC would want to look as if they're copying the Big Top 40.
