#336. Modjo - Lady (Hear Me Tonight)

2 weeks at #1 in 2000 (#26 of 42 for '00)

I find this too repetitive and it doesn't really go anywhere. I don't like this near as much as other dance songs from this time period. But I do like it enough to rank it this high. Always makes me think of summer.

#340. Wretch 32 feat. Josh Kumra - Don't Go

1 week at #1 in 2011 (#19 of 30 for '11)

The most unlikely #1 of the year. And it wasn't even a dead week - it beat "Heaven" and "Moves Like Jagger" to the top spot. The production is very minimalistic; and it stands out a lot from other 2011 hits. This song is about him putting into words just how much this girl means to him and how he doesn't want her to.. well.. go. The backing "ooh-yeah-yay"'s work well. Josh's parts sound like they're a sample from another song; but they're not.

I agree with you on this one. It's very downtempo and minimal. But I guess that's what gives it its charm. Wretch 32's single chart run was very bizarre.

Traktor, his 1st single, peaked at No.5.

Unorthodox, single No.2, peaked at 2.

Then Don't Go, his 3rd single, peaked at No.1. It usually goes the other way round, right? Haha!

Yassssss, much love for Bom Bom!

Better yet, Nero did precisely the same thing in the same year. Me & You #15, then Guilt #8, then Promises #1!

#335. Mint Royale - Singin' In The Rain

This is my 16th birthday #1. This is a dance remix, released in 2005, of the Gene Kelly song. It went #1 after being used on Britain's Got Talent 3 years later. I like the production and it balances the old timey sound with modern dance music well.

#334. Iyaz - Replay

2 weeks at #1 in 2010 (#17 of 34 for '10)

I'll always remember this one girl that called into my local radio station's request show saying "I want to hear Sean Kingston's new song 'Replay'!" I can't blame her though, because they do sound similar. This song is very forgotten nowadays, isn't it? It's not the most original sounding song. I've always liked it, though. It's just a carefree upbeat catchy track.

#333. Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next

1 week at #1 in 1998 (#20 of 30 for '98)

So this is about the Spanish Civil War. Of all things to make a song about... that is rather random. This is a very chilling song. The refrain of the title really rattles you. Though I'm unsure as to what "this" is supposed to refer to. If I tolerate what exactly? The guitar chord that's used throughout the verses really adds to that chilling effect.

#332. Darius - Colourblind

2 weeks at #1 in 2002 (#18 of 29 for '02)

A song about all his emotions expressed in colours. And then being with this girl makes those colours go away. It's a bit cheesy, but I don't mind it. My favourite of all the Pop Idol #1's in 2002.

#331. Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah

My favourite X Factor winner, and my favourite X Factor winner's single. I feel like she does a strong job vocally, though that isn't my area of expertise, and I like how she makes it sound big and dramatic towards the end. Especially when she sang it on the show. Basically from the "maybe there's a God above.." part onwards.

'Hallelujah' is one of those rare songs that has multiple versions, and I like all of them. I like the undersated Cohen & Buckley versions but also appreciate what Alexandra does with it. Best X-Factor winners single by a mile.

#330. U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own

1 week at #1 in 2005 (#14 of 25 for '05)

Sometimes you can't make a song title long enough. I can probably add this to the ever growing list of forgettable #1's. Bono wrote this about coping with the loss of his father. It's decent enough, but it sounds like a typical U2 song. Actually it sounds like a Coldplay song, the more that I think about it.

#329. JLS feat. Dev - She Makes Me Wanna

1 week at #1 in 2011 (#18 of 30 for '11)

It's just really catchy, I guess. The "oh oh oh oh oh oh"'s and the "direct me to the floor..." bit are great hooks. I'm still unclear as to what she makes them wanna do, though. I'm not the biggest fan of these songs with incomplete sentences for a chorus (just look at Nicole Scherzinger's last single.) I always forget that Dev is in this song, and she sort of comes out of nowhere. Of all artists to feature, she just seems utterly random. And then of course they have to go into naming a bunch of places in the world, which is one of my pet peeves in music. It just screams lazy lyrics. And the production is so 2011. But putting all that aside, it's still a really catchy song lol.

#328. Professor Green feat. Emeli Sandé - Read All About It

2 weeks at #1 in 2011 (#17 of 30 for '11)

Ignoring that this is basically a "Love The Way You Lie" clone, it's not that bad. I hated how this blocked "Earthquake" from #1, though. It feels a bit odd listening to Part I and not Part III lol. This song is (obviously) about Pro Green's hostile relationship with his father growing up. How his dad was never there and never supported him, etc etc. It's a very emotionally charged song; he raps with such anger and frustration in this. And then we have the Queen Of Overexposure doing the chorus; which is an emotional deceleration of "I'm going to express all my anger and I don't care what anyone else says about it." I find that chorus kind of weak, though.

#327. Rihanna - Take A Bow

2 weeks at #1 in 2008 (#11 of 20 for '08)

Ignoring her features, this is my least favourite Rihanna #1. In both the UK and the US. Probably one of my least favourite singles of her career too. It's just sort of.. dull. After the club banger "Don't Stop The Music", she decided to lead off her Rih-release with a ballad. Showing how her singles can be diverse, I guess. Rihanna had done a ballad(-ish) before with "Unfaithful", but this time it's about her boyfriend being unfaithful instead of her. What saves this song from making me fall asleep are certain key lines, like "please; just cut it out" and "how about a round of applause." And of course the overall b**chiness of it. He screwed up; he's trying to apologize; Rihanna sees right through it.

#326. Doop - Doop

3 weeks at #1 in 1994 (#8 of 15 for '94)

Lol I have a soft spot for this. I kind of like this instrumental for some reason. Though, it's get a bit tiring by the end of the song. When the "doop doop doop doop doop" part starts, I just lose it. It's so stupid, that it makes me laugh every time.

Yes! This! I was obsessed with this track when I was in high school! It's such a random No.1! Also went to No.1 right through my 2nd birthday! Finally found the CD single in a charity shop and bought it! All things considered, this is placed quite high in this chart!

#325. My Chemical Romance - Welcome To The Black Parade

2 weeks at #1 in 2006 (#14 of 24 for '06)

I HATED this song in 2006. I've grown to not hate it, but still not that big on it. The song is about his father dying and this is him grieving, and wanting his memory to live on. I think it's a well written song, but my problem is that I don't like when this goes into screamo mode. Just no. I find the bridge especially grating.

#324. Oasis - Lyla

1 week at #1 in 2005 (#13 of 25 for '05)

"Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey Lyla" is a really good hook, and it easily gets stuck in my head. My only problem is that this song relies on it so much that the song just doesn't go anywhere by the of it.

#323. Tony Di Bart - The Real Thing

1 week at #1 in 1994 (#7 of 15 for '94)

Initially, I found this kind of boring as far as dance songs go, but the more I listen to it, the more I like it. There's a certain subdued nature to the production that I like, and the background female vocals really add to this. Tony's parts are rather blah though.

#322. Cover Drive - Twilight

1 week at #1 in 2012 (#20 of 36 for '12)

Well here's one of, if not the, most forgettable #1 of 2012. For some I really liked Cover Drive that year. This island sound, is just so fun, summery, breezy, upbeat, I guess. "Explode" (minus Dappy) and "Turn Up The Love" are jams. The "ooh la ooh la"'s and "twil-la-la-la-la-la-la-twilight"'s are really catchy. But what I really like is the use of the word "twilight." This song is about these two people that like each other, and are about to confess their feelings, and want to make things official. Twilight happens both after dusk and before dawn. Dawn is a metaphor for this soon to be new relationship. And the two of them are in this twilight phase that happens just before that. I don't know if that was their intention, but I like my interpretation.
