260. Leah McFall - Home (feat. will.i.am)

Leah is holding up extremely well. I expected a drop down towards the top 500 at best by now!

The 50% Ed top 10 is a MESS. Just like free songs, instant grats shouldn't show up on iTunes unless they're chart eligible.

No other country bans these songs from charting. I doubt it would be worth the effort for iTunes to make them not show up on UK iTunes but show up everywhere else (and anyway, it is an iTunes chart and not affiliated with the OCC so I don't see why they would do this even if they could anyway, like it or not this is reflecting what songs people are downloading from iTunes at the moment even if it is automatically).

This sort of situation is only ever going to happen with very major albums, in all other cases even where artists release several instant grat tracks they are only going to briefly show up in the top 40 and then quickly drop off again (see Jack White, deadmau5, Lana Del Rey, Linkin Park, Morrissey...) And in any case it's only going to 'distort' the iTunes chart for one week, just like with the three 1D tracks.

If Jason Derülo would just wiggle :kink: out of the Top ten and was replaced by Here For You, then the entire Top ten would be made up of artists whom wrote or produced their own songs.

#14 Demi Lovato - Neon Lights

Taking out the four ineligible Ed Sheeran tracks, she's actually now Top 10, right?

There are 3 of them, so she's #11 I believe?

To be honest, other than a few people on this forum, most people don't care if a song on the iTunes chart can chart or not.

OTOH, wouldn't someone interested enough to check the iTunes chart in the first place, wonder why some of the songs high on there don't chart...

Oh, I was literally just about to do a combined update... Was in my plans to kill some time in my free periods ~

And the moaning about instant grats is quite silly IMO, they're a great promotional method and if you see that you can get x number of songs instantly when pre-ordering a brand new album, that's even more of an incentive to pre-order. Besides, anyone who really cares about them showing up when they don't chart will probably be on a forum like Buzzjack, very few outside of these communities will actually care.

There are 3 of them, so she's #11 I believe?

There's 4, putting her at #10. But combined, John Legend is ahead which puts her back to #11.

I agree that very few people will care about ineligible instant grats showing up on the iTunes chart. I do think however that there'll be plenty of Ed Sheeran fans annoyed by his whole release strategy/campaign thus far.

Really? I know I'd be really happy if I got a new Vamps track every day for a week. I'm purposely holding off listening to the new Ed tracks so I can hear the album in full but if it were The Vamps or Lily Allen doing this, for example, I know I'd be very excited

You're right. I completely missed 'Don't' for some reason.

SEE HOW CONFUSING THIS ALL IS?!

Yeah I don't think anyone other than avid iTunes chart watchers will care at all. Most people will just ignore all of these daily releases completely and wait for the album. People that want to get these tracks now will do so and just do 'complete my album' next week.

Well I'm sure there's a lot like yourself as well but I think his core fanbase and certain other demographics will be irritated by waiting so long for both the single and now the album and feel a bit manipulated by this drip feeding of songs. Ed Sheeran has a very """authentic""" singer-songwriter, sleeping-on-friends'-couches, releasing-independent-EPs type of background and I think all these delays and promotional tricks designed for commercial dominance will rub a lot of people up the wrong way. Personally, I don't care other than I would like to have heard the music sooner but I think the label should have devised a better strategy that was more suited to his target market (but then maybe I'm in disagreement with who his target market actually is, such is the scope of his appeal with '+').

Personally I don't see the point of pre-ordering a download at all - are iTunes gonna run out, or something...

If I'm not mistaken, are these tracks all appearing because everybody who has pre-ordered the album is being given these songs automatically and thus appearing on this chart as a result?

(Or is this blindingly obvious and I'm only just starting to get the concept of this whole "instant grat" thing?)

I guess people are forgettable and just doing it in case they don't remember when something is released.

I would never pre-order a download myself and find it odd that pre-order singles have almost completely killed off the 'fake versions'. It's not as if pre-ordering a single will allow you to have the song available to listen to. Surely people bought fake versions so that they had a version of their favourite song to download and be able to listen to in full there and then, surely pre-ordering doesn't solve that issue? Either that or people genuinely were just that idiotic and the majority of people that bought fake versions thought that they were the real deal

Unfortunately, I think that's the reason most of the time.
