And let's be honest here - Nicole Scherzinger's fanbase is mainly gays isn't it? I can see why Radio 1 have taken a look and thought that the audience is too narrow to result in appearing on their radar. Lady Gaga has the gays and the little monsters. Not saying it's right of course but you know.

I think it's a pretty fair point that if Radio 1 want to pull in pop fans, there are better artists to play than Nicole. If you assume there are a limited amount of spaces available for pop songs (as with any genre) on the playlist, it's difficult to justify playing Nicole (who hasn't had a proper hit since 'Right There') over more successful and popular pop artists like 5SOS or Katy Perry.

here is a thoroughly good opinion piece on the radio 1 playlist and its mechanics :: http://songbytoad.com/2014/05/the-bbc-radi...ke-controversy/

i think people need to accept that internet gays do not have and nor should they have identakit taste to what radio 1 puts out. we have no keeley from scunthorpe calling in to request the new jake bugg single coz she's well bored revising.

furthermore it's inconsequential if radio 1's audience is older than it should be as it still has to stand by its publicly funded remit. furthermore i think it'd do some people well here to stop pinning all their hopes and dreams on the act they love garnering chart success through a radio 1 playlisting and when they fail to gain that spot on the list calling the playlist and radio 1 out...

That is such a stupid statement to make, good lord. It is like saying Arctic Monkeys fans are mostly strraights, completely irrelevant. Audience being too narrow?! There are more than ten gay people in the UK you know. Jesus christ.

Erm... think you didn't get the gist of what I was trying to say.

I even SAID it wasn't right! It's just that I could see Radio 1 thinking in that way.

OH. I suppose, but then it would be a very stupid way for them to think. It doesnt even bother me that much really, I dont even like Nicoles song that much. Maybe Im bored.
Radio 1 purposefully try to avoid music that is seen as 'gay interest only'. I think it was Aly that posted something here once about Time Bomb not being playlisted due to Aled implying some reactions on Twitter meaning it wasn't Radio 1 friendly. I think it's because some pretentious w*n**rs who listen regularly would find those songs 'not cool enough' and 'well gay lolz'. Terrible really.

I don't think it's much to do with being against gay interest (well, in general gays do support the acts in question more loyally than most but..), more that pop singers especially, once they get to a point where they're not going to pick up many new fans and are only ever going to have an ever-dwindling fanbase with every new single they put out, Radio 1 sees no need to support them further, and I can understand that, when your remit is to promote new and exciting new music, who needs to include a song from a singer (that everyone already knows about) who is currently releasing a song that sounds pretty similar to all their other hits?

Pop music also tends to have an ever evolving sound and so it's easier for veteran singers to fall into the trap of producing 'dated' sounding music which is the sound of the scene they burst out on. I don't even know if that's a criticism of Nicole's song or not as I haven't heard it but it should be asked of every pop record.. does this fit the climate enough to be a hit in 2014? If even from the start the answer is likely no, they won't touch it.

I think Nicole's new single is actually pretty unique, I can't think of many other pop songs that sound like it.

But they did randomly dump her straight after 'Right There' when she was arguably at her peak.

music comes and goes in fazes, look back to the era of 'landfill indie' being the darkest for an 'internet gay' and even now a lot of the 90s rehash dance appeals to the 'internet gays'.

i doubt radio 1 sees it in such terms anyway, the subculture of our site as well as those few others represents an absolutely minute demographic of the population. radio 1 is carving out its own ilk to audience and remit slightly alien to us as a site. besides as i've already said, people only want the radio 1 playlisted status as they want to see the songs they attach themselves to (and use charts as the total barometer of success) to do well. the box, kiss, capital and even gaydar radio all exist to fill the niche.

do many of us really listen to radio 1? i mean whenever i inadvertently catch it is all music i either think is terrible or tired of months ago, when you have blogs, spotify and even (and somewhat integrally) bjsc why do you need or want it?

The A list and B list seems to be slightly different in the Radio 1 website.

'West Coast' is gone instead of 'Snap Out Of It'; 'Stolen Dance' climbs to A instead of 'Satisfy'.

Why is Jungle (Aug 3) playlisted when some big songs from Jul 20 /Jul 27 haven't? Is there a particular reason, I thought R1 usually playlisted songs in order of release.
Is it not the Jungle remix of Jamie N Commons thats out on the 3/8? It does seem very far away but maybe they want to support it ALOT?!
