By the looks of things, her music is still available on Deezer and Google Play for premium users only.

It's a wise decision. She's selling in huge amounts, with or without streaming.

More artists should follow her lead.

What exactly makes it a wise decision aside from the fact that she's selling quite a bit? Not sure it's wise for a runner winning a race to shoot themselves in the foot just because "they're doing well anyway".

It's not exactly wise when she had about 16 million listeners on Spotify which is probably making her lots of money. Plus she's still selling lots of albums

I remember reading somewhere that artists get paid very little through streams. Spotify say in that article that they think Taylor should allow them to use her music so that fans can access it whenever/wherever; I personally see Spotify as more of a hindrance as it uses up my data allowance on my iPhone - whereas if I download a track, I can listen to it however many times I like!

However it's good if you pay for Spotify premium because you can listen to music offline and therefore not use up data.

It doesn't use data allowance if you use sync tracks to your phone so you can play them offline (and then turning data off) (as April said basically)

The Spotify article that Rush linked to says they pay 70% of their revenue to artists so going by UK chart logic (1 sale = 100 streams), if her 16 million listeners listened to 1 of her songs in the past month, that's equivalent to 160,000 sales which will make over £100,000 for her. In reality it'll be more as some people will play multiple Taylor Swift songs.

I imagine it's much worse for less famous/independent artists who don't get many streams but Taylor is getting paid lots from it

As someone else has said, an artist makes next to nothing from Spotify. It's essentially giving away their songs for free. I am 1 of the "12 million" that listen to her on Spotify, but I can go out and buy her CD's or download her album(s).

As Spotify becomes more and more popular, album sales will keep decreasing. Unless Spotify find a way to more it profitable for the artist I can see more and more artists following Taylor's path.

album sales will keep decreasing anyway. Ever heard of YouTube? I imagine lots of people listen to songs there and don't buy them. So if a song isn't on spotify it'll 99.9% be on YouTube so people who weren't going to buy it anyway will still not buy it.

Surely artists don't make much money from single downloads anyway? Wasn't it said a while back that Lily Allen only made £8000 from "Somewhere Only We Know"? In reality, they make most of their money from albums, tours, endorsements and merchandise anyway.

For example: Rochelle Humes. The Saturdays sell next to nothing, which has to be divided amongst five artists as well as the label etc. However, she's well off because of her endorsements and solo projects (such as her clothing range and presenting jobs).

Good point April! I'm just thinking back to an article I read a while back where there was a singer moaning about making like £100 or something from millions of streams, but can't for the life of me remember who said it or what thread the link as posted in.

Touring, appearances and merchandise have always been the main money spinners for the actual artist though, I believe!

I imagine The Saturdays must have made pennies individually from one of their standard hits, if that. The fact they didn't have writing credits will have seen to that.

This. Touring is the where the big dollars are these days. Lily probably would have made more if she actually wrote Somewhere Only We Know but still it's not enough to live off of.

Well she'd only make $300.000 from 100 million plays appaz, so it doesn't really add much to her. She's against streaming and I think she's trying to male a point with this

no Cheryl yet

Back in the days before streaming or itunes, I remember Jamiroquai was on Top Of The Pops and he said something about not even been able to afford bus fare. Even back in the days of physical sales labels took most of the money
Any sign of Cheryl today?
Yes, she's #50
