Umi's Chart Highlights

  • "Rude" tops the Hot 100 for a 4th week but its dominance is threatened by Sam Smith, who rises 3-2 with "Stay With Me". "Rude" drops by 6% in chart points, which allows Sam to close last week's points gap of 16.4% to 9%.
  • As "Bang Bang" storms into the top 10 at #6, it becomes the second highest début of the year. Predictably, the only song to beat it so far is also an Ariana Grande song: "Problem", which started at #3.
  • Alongside that, "Bang Bang" notches up the second highest sales start of the year in débuting with 230,000 sales. Again, "Problem" is the only song to have it beat in that department, having started with 438,000.
  • "Fancy" extends its run at #1 on Streaming Songs to 12 weeks, pushing it past "We Can't Stop" as second longest runner at #1 on that chart. "Wrecking Ball", with 13 weeks, remains the only song ahead of it.
  • "Latch" is #10 this week, but the only component of the chart it is in the top 10 is Radio Songs, where it is currently #5.
  • Digital track sales this past week totaled 20.4 million downloads, up 5 percent compared with last week (19.4 million) and down 10 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (22.8 million).
  • Year-to-date track sales are at 695.3 million, down 13 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (798.1 million).

Jessie debuted at #6?! :o

Didn't quite expect that for some reason

Jessie matching her previous USA career high in one week! :o
I'm surprised 230k is enough to début at #6 considering poor 'Problem'! Great start.

7 song by UK artists in the US hot 100 !!!! that must a record.... great news for British artists worldwide... Hopefully we'll see a lot of new UK artists doing well... i think next will be the Vamps and Ella Henderson....

Unfortunately Katy Perry seems to have chosen the wrong single, hence the flop of 'This is how we do' it's not doing well on sales and streaming and airplay seem to be shy... 'Walking on air' was the obvious choice.... 'Unconditionally' should've been scrapped or left as the 5 th single...

It's great, but I doubt it's a record, since there were those "British invasions" in the US in past decades which I assume were on a bigger level than this.

As for the next one, I agree Ella Henderson will probably do well there with Ghost, but I don't think it's started being promoted there yet, so it might take a whille. The highest on the Bubbling Under chart I think is the acoustic version of Latch by Sam Smith, but I assume since the original version of the song has peaked his cover of it will probably start falling too.

I am extremely uneasy about Jessie J's sudden return to relevance . 'Bang Bang' does sound like a hit so it's not that surprising but then it's Jessie so it's obviously upsetting nonetheless.

Jessie J and Meghan Trainor in the top 10 is good to see. The latter will probably overtake MAGIC! in a few weeks

Clean Bandit making progress

To be honest I'm not too impressed with how 'Bang Bang' did. I might be underestimating it but only 230k first week really shows the hype on the internet wasn't completely reflected by the public. And with it being so reliant on Ariana and Nicki, I don't think it will do much for Jessie J as a name in the US.

Yeah I agree that it's selling off the names of the other two (and the fact that it's a decent song, in fairness) and I don't think it says much about Jessie's appeal in the US. Still, it's her song technically so I think 230k is a great result for her, all things considered.

It's definitely good! I guess I'm fine with her getting another big hit as long as it's just a temporary revival :kink: And with the amount of money being spent on 'Bang Bang' I can't imagine they'll go out all guns blazing with single #2.

Grande is the "it" girl right now but neither Minaj nor Jessie J has had a big radio hit in the past couple years. I think a lot of the draw is the song itself. Never underestimate what Max Martin can do for your career.

For those who follow the points closer -- any realistic chance Sam Smith could sneak in a week at #1? He's selling more than Rude and is currently #1 on pop radio.

Nicki's name carries weight too, though. 'Pills N Potions' may have flopped but it was still purchased by 100k+ people first week. And Jessie's name isn't entirely worthless, mostly just because she's someone well enough to turn it into a well known trio, which is better than a duet.

But I'm sure the song does play a part too of course.

As for Sam, look at the chart highlights. I don't think Sam will pass MAGIC! next week, but the week after he will be #1 unless someone (Meghan?) can rise fast enough to overtake.

I do think Ariana's and Nicki's combined fan base shot it up to #1 initially but obviously the hype of three artists and the song itself will have played a part
