So you expect the UK charts to be announced on Friday instead of Sunday then?

That doesn't mean it should be announced right after compilation. For example in Germany they compile it from Friday to Thursday but they only publish it for subscribers the next Thursday! (one week later!)

But a global release day of Friday won't necessitate a change the UK's chart compilation day.

It might even persuade record companies to take a less front-loaded approach to record promo, as 2 days sales will almost never be enough to get a song to #1 on release week.

I think he was referring to that.

That also has nothing to do with the article... See Rush's post above.

Sorry Umi I didn't even think about posting in the International Charts forum as I'm so used to seeing similar articles in here, but you are probably right that it belong in there just as much, if not more than in here.

I'd announce them on Sunday on R1, but track sales from Friday to Thursday.

I've often thought that if they'd published the singles and album charts on different days (thus different chart start days as well) that would be quite interesting. I think the album chart gets a little overshadowed coming out at the same time as the singles chart. Wouldn't it be more fun, if say the album chart came out on a Friday for example.

they used to do that back in the 70's - the new chart was announced Tuesday lunchtime on Radio 1 (singles) and albums on another day, Record Mirror published them for Thursday and Top Of The Pops on Thursday, with the final airing being the Sunday chart rundown.

We used to take radios to school to hear the new charts and new entries. That was quite exciting as there were no midweeks so evrything was new. I say go back to Tuesdays as a Tuesday to Monday sales day would split new singles sales over two weeks and sort out those that are hyped to the top from those that can sustain sales - and records would go up in week 2. get rid of mid-week it ruins the surprises of record positions - itunes might be a guide but at least it would be less certain..

That would just lead record companies to change the release date for singles. I'm sure you will remember that singles used to be released on a Thursday with the chart being based on Monday to Saturday sales (shops were all closed on Sundays). Then The Jam released Going Underground on a Monday and it became the first song for ages to go straight to number one. Soon afterwards, all singles were released on a Monday.

I suspect the BBC would prefer to stick to the chart being released on a Sunday as well. A weekday chart would have to be broadcast later than 4pm to allow the target audience to get back from school. It would then clash with various television programmes.

is this just happening for albums then or singles too? anyway I guess this means less fanbase #1s in the album chart and more long running Ed Sheeran type domination with big fan base releases going 3-4-down (see Drake), yawn

There's an international charts forum?

If this thread went in there I'd never see it.

The independents spokesman in the Music Week article doesn't like the idea, but surely they can stick to a Monday release if they wanted to, and get some benefit from being the only new physical releases on a Monday, and get some chart position advantage assuming the charts are still compiled on a Sunday-Saturday basis. Shops that sell books, games, DVDs and CDs will be used to stocking different new releases on different days during the week so could cope with having new music batches on both Mondays and Fridays?

I quite like the chart unpredictability you'd get from Friday releases in a Sunday-Saturday chart week.

It has now been confirmed. Assuming the chart week remains the same, anticipating albums chart entries for my commentary will become a lot harder :drama:

Surely the OFC, Billboard, ARIA, etc. will have to change the date they publish the charts on?

I think the chart day will change, my guess is Saturday?

Edit: Actually no that makes no sense, the most likely day would be Thursday, with sames from Friday to Wednesday being counted

Another question about this, will we see albums not being withheld from release anymore, such as The Veronicas and also Nick Jonas's album which we're still waiting for in the UK

That doesn't make sense either, do Thursday sales just stop counting? I imagine the chart would be announced on Fridays.
