Because calling a woman artist a whore as a term of abuse is no better than calling a black artist a 'N' as a 'joke' term of abuse.

It isn't acceptable.

Though his choice of words is questionable, it's very clear that John did not mean the comment as abuse. To call him misogynistic because of an off the cuff remark is assuming he thinks that way of all women which I'm sure you well know that probably isn't the case.

Don't talk for someone else. He called her a whore, that's abuse.

If someone had called a black artist an 'N' would you say the same?

A mod should remove it if he hasn't got the manners to delete it.

I'm talking for someone else only as much as you are. Do you actually know John as a poster? I'm not defending his use of words but I am defending the intent behind the post.

Come on then 'defend the intent' of calling a woman artist a whore.....

I don't think he meant it in the way you're suggesting. There.

Wow. I am astonished this is still going. It was an off the cuff remark and one I was unaware would cause such an issue for anyone on here. I am sorry that you have been offended by my comments Jimmy. I personally do not equate what I said wih racism, sexism, or any other ism of that ilk. In my view the term, at least when I use it, is simply a derogatory term as any form of expletive would be. Would you have been equally as offended had I used the word bitch?
It's PC GONE MAD
I knew right away that it was not meant to be taken seriously, but I do agree we should avoid using such names. Bitch is as far as I would go.
Why? In effect you're in favour of censoring people for saying what they want to say - it's obvious it's in jest. It's not like Janet Devlin sits on Buzzjack and reads this.

Yeah, she's too busy being a whore and stuff.

That's just John's humour, which lots of us will know. I can pretty much assure you he didn't mean that Janet is actually a whore, however is can see how posters who aren't familiar with the Lounge would misconstrue that. But he's a global mod, he wouldn't have got there if he was on this forum being incessantly misogynistic :P

Let's just draw a line under this whole debacle, and discuss Creatures Of The Night nicely!

Oops. I clearly am wrong for having said it , and whilst I personally am not and never would be offended by such language. Clearly Jimmy is/has been. Basically, in future, i will refrain from using such terms and I apologise for having done so on this occasion.

I think it is necessary to draw a distinction between the use of words like "whore" and the infamous n word, given the former is a derogatory noun that happens to be applied to women (but does not mock the concept of womanhood itself) whereas the latter attacks the person for their race itself. If I was to call Jason Derulo a dick that would hardly be sexist just because it's a male-specific insult, but if I was to say "haha he's a man" then the insult would be his sex, yes.

John was not attacking her for being a woman and use of gender-specific nouns does not make one sexist, so please realise the flaw in that accusation. Whether or not his post was still a bit much is up for debate but accusations of sexism are serious and shouldn't be thrown around without basis.

I don't get how you can't call cowels music real music. Acts like Leona and Sam Bailey are undoubtedly talented whether they sing their own music or not and I'm pretty sure that eventually cowels label let's the artists write their own music if they want to anyway. Janet Devlin is good imo. She was my fave to win until she got the boot :snif:

People who moan about "real music" and the like are just music snobs really, it infers that the music they like is what everybody else should like because it's REAL and it's totes credible!!1!

Although I agree with your point, I also find the terms 'music snobs' and 'credible' to be overused and equally derogatory. They may not put there points across very well about music they don't like but by using those terms you attempt to invalidate their opinions as much as they do yours.

Such INTELLECTUAL DEBATE coming from a JANET DEVLIN thread of all things!!!!

It works the other way round as well.

Everyone should just be as open-minded as myself.

Basically that. People should just leave people to like what they like.

What utter rubbish.

Try calling a woman a whore in the street or in the workplace and see if that is taken as specially offensive to women or sexist.

It is offensive and unacceptable and there was no need for it.

If that's the attitude of moderators and the comment is still there, I will go elsewhere to discuss music.

Have a look at yourselves.

The music video for 'Creatures of the Night' has just been released and it is amazing! It's so wonderfully creative in how they've managed to create a whole new world that they call 'Janet's Wonderland' (according to her mailing list email) and it links in so well with the song being about Janet's insomnia which she talks about in the video I posted in the original post. Such a creative video, perfect for the song and for Janet!
