Whilst in HMV today I couldn't help but noticing the total running time of Beyonce's Deja Vu 2-track CD single is 12 minutes - is this chart eligible or not?

No it isn't - 2 track CD's are maximum 10 minutes long.

not necessarily, it depends on the dealer price of the CD with 2 tracks, and the other available formats. A CD single can have just one track and be 19 mins 59 secs long, and still be eligible for the charts. Similarly it can have 2 tracks and run to 12 minutes and still count. A maxi single doesn't need to have 3 tracks.

Deja Vu is available in 3 formats:

CD single - 2 tracks

CD single - 5 tracks, all mixes of Deja Vu

12" single - 4 tracks, all mixes of Deja Vu

Format one (2 tracks running to 12 minutes) is eligible if it has a dealer price of £1.79 or more, and the other CD version isn't classed as a maxi-single but rather a remix single. The rules aren't clear on how the 12" version fits into all this, but it is clear on how CD versions are to be treated.

Incidentally. just to confuse things further, a "2 track CD" format doesn't have to have 2 tracks - that is the maximum, it can have just one track, so long as it doesn't exceed 10 minutes. Similarly a maxi-CD can have the same track, running to 20 minutes. A remix single requires at least 2 tracks (a track and a remix of that track) and can run to 40 minutes.

It is possible to release 2 versions of a song spread over 3 formats. So, take a hypothetical song called "Hung Up" ;)

You can have:

2 track CD

Hung Up (original) 9:59

maxi single

Hung Up (blah blah remix) 19:59

remix single

Hung Up (original) 9:59

Hung Up (blah blah remix) 19:59

all perfectly legitimate, so long as the "2 track" single costs the dealer £1.20 to £1.78 and the other two versions cost the dealer at least £1.79.

I ask this question because I thought we might have had a repeat of the 'Love Generation' 2-track CD controversy, except perhaps the OCC hadn't noticed this time...

It's just that I don't see much difference between the formats of 'Deja Vu' and 'Love Generation', what exactly is it that caused LG to be disqualified where DV isn't?

it probably IS ineligible for the charts, just overlooked. As it sells for £1.99 I can't imagine it being sold to retailers for £1.79, there would be no profit to the record store. But there is the possibility of it being eligible.
does it really matter as long as we can hear the song
