Ok, I have tried to use three different devices to upload an avatar and the website becomes unresponsive. It is not a gif, and it's already sized to fit at 100x100. I have tried about 5 different avatars, and have been attempting to resolve this on my own (via patence~) for almost a week.

Any suggestions?

Are you using iOS8?

Yes...

I'm about to give it a shot on my friends laptop.

And no error message. It just never loads (I've left it up loading for almost 30 min at one point).

Didn't want to open a new thread for something so insignificant so here it goes. I have put up a new avatar a couple of days now and it appears fine in my avatar settings page, but it refuses to show up when I post? I tried re-uploading it and didn't fix anything.

Have you tried opening the image in a new tab and refreshing (or maybe even just refreshing the page you're on)?

I see this which I *think* is new:

It takes a while for it to actually show up

I think it's just a matter of needing to refresh the cached image as it uploads at the same URL; I just changed mine and that's all I needed to do.

This worked, thanks!

I know it usually takes a while, but this time it seemed like it was taking forever.

I tried uploading a gif avatar the other day, but it wouldn't move just stayed on one image. It was 150x150 so maybe they don't automatically resize like jpg/pngs?
I've done some testing and it seems as if you try to upload a gif that is bigger than 100x100, it will resize it but remove the gif functionality and just show as a normal picture. I don't know if this is what happened with you Cassidy but if your gif was bigger than 100x100 you'll need to resize it first (this site worked for me) and then you'll be able to upload it (as long as it's not larger than 50KB).
