Hello! Been wanting to do some topics like these for a while and have finally got round to it! So as a small introduction I first started getting into the charts around mid-2004 & decided that to "commemorate" 10 years of following them I will be posting my top 50 personal hits from each year dating back to 2005.

Pretty simple but just a brief overview every song I rank must have hit the UK Top 40 for the first time in said year. So for example, for my 2005 list I eliminated songs like (Is This The Way To) Amarillo, Somebody Told Me & I Predict A Riot. I'm hoping there are no residing errors but I'm sure one or two may have crept in so feel free to correct & I will adjust accordingly. But otherwise hopefully you enjoy the lists and just a small "warning" as such, I feel some songs on my lists (particuarly near the top) are very un-Buzzjack-like, but hopefully it should make for some interesting feedback :P

May or may not be able to post regular updates but the aim is to post in batches of 4 up to the top 10 then reveal more gradually. Anyway, enough talk let's get into it! Hopefully any viewers/readers will enjoy & feel free to comment & criticise

First lot from 2005 coming up soon...

50. Daniel Bedingfield - Wrap My Words Around You

Peak: 12

Top 40 weeks: 3

Yep! Kicking off this countdown we have D-Bed with his 2nd single from his 2nd album Second First Impression. Now, I actually love most of his songs, particularly his earlier singles, so I was quite glad he came back in 2004 with new material, although it paled in comparison in terms of both overall quality and success. That said, I do like this track and it has a very singalong chorus. Confined to the forgotten pile by most but I still give both this and Nothing Hurts Like Love the occasional play. Would love some sort of huge comeback from him but in fairness (and I couldn't believe this either) he does have a number 1 single this very year, albeit uncredited, as a vocalist on Secondcity's I Wanna Feel so yay for that! Knew he still had relevance :D

49. Lovefreekz - Shine

Peak: 6

Top 40 weeks: 4

Next up we have a (in my mind) largely underappreciated track from Mark Hadfield, otherwise know as Lovefreekz. This catchy little dance number samples Shine A Little Love from Electric Light Orchestra and I really like the way it's handled. I like the general production on this and particularly the breakdown part at about 1:57 onwards. A shame he didn't really have any other success, mainstream at least, as I thought this was a very good introduction! Overall it's quite a simplistic track but sometimes it can work wonders and this is one of those times where it definitely does.

48. Eminem - Mockingbird

Peak: 4

Top 40 weeks: 7

For me, Eminem has always been a hit or miss artist. Some of his more recent output (e.g. The Monster, Not Afraid) I'm not too keen on but there's no doubt he's a great rapper and has some absolute gems in his discography (Lose Yourself, Without Me) and in my view this is also one of them. This is Eminem on form. I love the way it really tells a story (the verses are pretty much spoken word) and paints the picture loud and clear. It all flows well into the chorus too and in summary this is a really powerful hip hop track. It was his 4th single to be released from 5th album Encore and one of the last before his hiatus (at least as a main artist) at the end of that year. Since his 2009 comeback, as said before, he's been hit and miss for me, but this track is one that definitely stands out from him overall.

47. Girls Aloud - Biology

Peak: 4

Top 40 weeks: 8

And now on to something a bit more light-hearted! This was the 2nd single taken from 3rd album, a different Science, Chemistry and probably one of my favourite tracks from them. A very bubbly pop song, I like the infectious beat right at the start of the track (sampled from an Animals track I believe) with Nadine killing it on vocals! It has quite an unusual structure too which for me made it stood out in the largely dominated pop market at that time. I've always found the video for this more memorable than some of their other earlier ones too

I agree, right up there with the best! And in answer to your first question they are in fact all on the list but one (or two) may be appearing very soon...

46. The Pussycat Dolls (feat. Busta Rhymes) - Don't Cha

Peak: 1

Top 40 weeks: 23

So next up we have one of THE iconic pop songs of 2005, lead single from debut album PCD, Don't Cha. I've always found this an enjoyable girl group track, full of energy and attitude, and one which has definitely stood the test of time better than most. It was quite the statement from Nicole but she really pulls it off and I'm sure the lyrics have been very relatable to many girls up and down the land! It's just full of hooks and certainly a song few forget in a while. I enjoy the Busta raps as well and feel they integrate into the rest of the song a lot better than the majority of sing/rap tracks of the time.

45. Kelly Clarkson - Because Of You

Peak: 7

Top 40 weeks: 16

Up next is Kelly Clarkson with 3rd single from 2nd album Breakaway. Now on the whole I'm not really a ballad person mainly due to the reason being, although I usually don't mind the songs, they're never really tracks I'd actively choose to listen to. This one however is an exception. This is a really powerful ballad with strong, emotive lyrics and Kelly really sells the story very well. It was a change of direction from most of her earlier material but it really paid off and this is another song that is well remembered even to this day. For me, she was at her strongest in this era and this won't be the last of her on this list...

44. Kelly Clarkson - Behind These Hazel Eyes

Peak: 9

Top 40 weeks: 10

...And just like London buses, 2 Kelly Clarkson tracks come along together! This was her previous single from same album Breakaway and for me just edges Because Of You. Showing a more rockier side of her, I really like the chorus especially on this one. It's a very punchy song and features her trademark powerful vocals. To me, this always felt a little underappreciated and overshadowed by Since U Been Gone and Because Of You at the time, but it was more of a grower and is therefore now my favourite of the 3. It was actually very close to her having all 3 on my list but SUBG just missed out on a placing.

43. Coldplay - Fix You

Peak: 4

Top 40 weeks: 11

Making their only appearance on this list we have Coldplay with 2nd single from widely acclaimed 3rd album X & Y. I really like this track and for me it's one of their best. I like the organ at the start with the very sombre tone, all eventually building up into that uptempo instrumental outpouring at about 2:53. The lyrics really come across as a strong message and I largely imagine this is a Coldplay favourite at their concerts. It seems remarkable that a song like this only had such a short chart life (at least in the top 40) but it's a very well established and remembered track and is a definitive highlight in their discography.

42. Kaiser Chiefs - Oh My God

Peak: 6

Top 40 weeks: 4

Kicking off this next batch it's the Kaiser Chiefs with their debut single from first album, Employment. Originally released in 2004 it limped in at #66 but following breakthrough single I Predict A Riot it was re-released before the album and shot to #6. I really like all of their early material and in particular every single released from said album. This has such a singalong chorus and was definitely good output during the indie rock boom which occurred around this era. Those clashing piano chords right at the start always stand out too. It was to be covered by Mark Ronson & Lily Allen just 2 years later and whilst I do like their spin on it, it has nothing on the original.

41. Mariah Carey - We Belong Together

Peak: 2

Top 40 weeks: 12

Ah yes, good old Mariah Carey! Very much another hit and miss artist for me. Singer of some of the most famous ballads in Hero & Without You and idol to many X-Factor hopeful. Her output in the noughties was very up and down but with this track, her 2nd release from 10th album, The Emancipation Of Mimi, she struck gold for me. This is a very well crafted R&B song, with a simple but effective production and very relatable lyrics. It shot to number 1 for a remarkable 14 weeks in the US but narrowly missed out on top spot here to 2Pac's Ghetto Gospel. This is one of my favourite Mariah tracks and one in which her marmite-y vocal acrobatics very much add to the song, belting out that last verse and chorus with complete conviction, you tell him girl!

40. BodyRockers - I Like The Way

Peak: 3

Top 40 weeks: 21

Now hands up who doesn't remember this banger?! Yep, debut single from Dylan Burns and Kaz James, collectively known as BodyRockers, released this gem in mid-2005, a track I always found a favourite from car windows. I like the downbeat intro (with the singer listing all the positives of whomever the target may be) slowly and very gradually building up into that infectious instrumental breakdown which explodes the track into life. Even 9 years on, I still give this the occasional play and I feel due to it's selection in many adverts/commercials since its release it's quite a recognisable tune even though many may not remember the group's name! They did actually release a follow up track but that was to only chart in Australia so for them in the UK at least, they will remain a (very good!) one-hit wonder.

39. Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc

Peak: 2

Top 40 weeks: 20

Don't call it a comeback! Up next we have lead single from musical project Gorillaz's 2nd widely-acclaimed album, Demon Days. Now, as a child I found Gorillaz a really unique and rather peculiar band, and very much unlike anything else around. Songs like Clint Eastwood and 19/2000 really stood out to me and they had (and still have) a very distinct sound. So when I found out they were releasing new material I was very eager to see what they'd bring, and what a tune this is! I really like the fuse of many different genres in this track as well as the general flow and production. Another track whereby it's use in many TV shows and films have helped it linger more in the memory than most through the years. It experienced a rather unusual chart run here, spending a month near the 20ish mark before shooting to number 2 and at the time becoming their highest peaking hit. DARE would soon take that honour and whilst I quite like that track too, this has the upper hand for me.

Feel good inc is so amazing, I love that song

Behind those hazel eyes, don't cha and fix you are also great

Because of you is my favourite song ever  It is just the most beautiful and amazing and fantastic song to ever exist

Kill me, but I really really dislike 2005 for music  It doesn't help that it was a crappy year for me, but for me there's fewer classics in '05 than there is in any other year of the noughties. Almost everything I listened to back then was either 90s dance music or underground hard house and trance on late night Radio 1.

It did, however, give us Pendulum's 'Hold Your Colour' which is one of the best albums ever made, Erasure's 'Nightbird' which was a fantastic return to form and gave them a deserved top 5 with Breathe (in one of the lowest-selling top 40 weeks ever, but hey, still impressive) and there were some good indie rock tracks around, otherwise out the ones you've mentioned I'll give you 'Because Of You' and 'Biology' as the best two so far. Will check out this thread though to see if there's any classics I've missed or forgotten!

Not at all! The mid noughties were definitely not as strong an era as many others and the fact that there was so little music doing well in my preferred genres made the list harder to compile. I had to stretch out to music in other fields for the first few lists but saying that for my later lists it was a lot harder to rank, particuarly at the top end.

But regarding Hold Your Colour I absolutely couldn't agree with you more it really is one of my favourite albums ever from my favourite band ever! :D
