The really impressive achievements are Elton John's first week on one day of sales, and Shayne Ward's first week on (I believe) sales just from Wednesday-Saturday. Incredible. I wonder if anything will ever break the million barrier again? Very unlikely!

658K in a day?!

Had that come out timed to the start of the chart week sales would have been over 2 million.

First post amended to include Band Aid 30. Coincidentally it appears to be the 30th fastest selling single!
Wake Me Up, 9PM and Flat Beat being in this list though  Dance music represent!

Flat Beat seems like an even bigger anomaly of a hit with those kind of opening sales :o I know the music video and the guy in it went viral / song was used in an advert but still those are amazing sales.

Things didn't go viral in 1999..did they?

549,823 PURE AND SIMPLE, Hear'Say

555,622 WHEREVER YOU ARE, Military Wives Choir

These are in the wrong order! :P

'Don't Look Back In Anger' sold 250k despite being the fourth single on an album which had already sold a couple of million. That's frankly ridiculous.

Not really cos in those days people bought singles for the B-sides/bonus tracks too, and that particular single had 3 iconic B-sides.

Can't believe how much it sold - its a pretty awful dreary track too.

RIP the classic b-side :(

The Robson & Jerome version of 'Unchained Melody' sold so well & so fast because

they were 2 of the most popular cast members of the ITV Series 'Soldier Soldier',

which was on TV at that time. (1995). They sang the Song on the Drama, & a great

many people urged them to release it as a Single. They did, & it ended up selling

well over a Million, & stayed at No.1 for 7 Weeks. On the back of it all, their 1st

Album sold over 2 Million in the UK & they had 2 further No.1 Singles & 1 more

No.1 Album.

To be fair, the original version of 'Cum On Feel The Noize' is pretty iconic. Oasis got to do their version on TotP although I suppose that wasn't until after the first week sale.

By Slade? Yeh great classic track. A boy in work asked last xmas was that the only song Slade every made it big with and i laughed saying no it was their last No1 but they had songs like Cum Feel the Noise and when i sang it to him he knew what it was immediately even though he didnt know it was by Slade!

Wasn't Cowell involved with Robson and Jerome? I don't remember their album selling that well.

The first Robson & Jerome album was the biggest seller of 1995! Even though it was released late in the year.

Admittedly, Jagged Little Pill and Morning Glory both outsold it in the long run but it was big at the time.

And yes, of course Cowell was involved, he did a lot of those sort of TV tie-ins back then.

Viral in a much more traditional sense in that it got a lot of TV play and people talked about it in real life.

Not too far off though, it was in December 1999 the first major hit based on an internet fad got released.

The Hamsterdance? Or was there an even earlier culprit?
