My favourite memory regarding DenDen discussions about the GH artwork - some people were convinced that you could actually see the girls in the letters  I’m sure someone said the E was one of the girls in a bikini 😭 I wish I could look back on those threads. Some of them were so wild!

Hahaha I remember that one well!

  • I look back on The Greatest Hits with a little bit of sadness really. The album itself has done well enough in the long run seeing as it is over 800,000 copies now in the UK and apparently on over 1 m

  • The product description on the Rough Trade site matches the exact text from the 2020 release, so it might just be a case of Rough Trade accidentally attaching the CD/digital artwork on the product pag

  • Yeah I agree with most of this. I was quite shocked that yet again they didn't do much promo for ithe GH and relied solely on their band name. I don't really get the hate for Headlines but as a single

Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) was released 17 years ago today! 5th November 2007 was its digital release date.

17 years though... :drama:

Still a CRIME that the Greatest Hits is not over 1million copies YET :nono:

Headlines is a cute girl, could have been better. We don't acknowlege the video :smoke:

“Headlines” is why it’s not a million seller lol. Had they dropped some cool and unexpected track like “Somthing kinda ooh” that Girls Aoud did, they could have sold over a million too. With “Headlines”, casual fans weren't gonna rush to buy it.

Agreed.

They have just released the Greatest Hits on YotoPlay (its a thing for kids... apparently quite popular lol)

Cute! I was a bit confused about it when I first saw it a few weeks ago, but since then I've learned more about the Yoto player and what its function is for parents/kids (the target market for it). Basically to reduce screen time for children and have more control over what is listened to (compared to streaming sites) and easy to use. I think it's nice if a new generation hears Spice Girls this way, with a physical product. Interestingly the track list leaves off Voodoo lol.

The new artwork for this Yoto release:

Interesting that they decided to go with a different picture for it. I'm nitpicking but it can be seen where graphic designer cut around the image of them, leaving a darker shade of white around them but then adding a solid white the rest of the card's artwork. Maybe it's not as noticeable on the physical card. I've turned the solid white part of the artwork into black, to make it clearer where the editing happened:

Nevertheless... I like the picture they've used! Although it's from the photoshoot that is associated with Stop's artwork, this particular shot wasn't used for either CD1 or CD2. If they'd used this for the 2019/2020 Greatest Hits vinyl releases, at least it would have seemed like a "new" picture rather than being the very familiar picture from Spice Up Your Life CD1 (a choice I was never too thrilled about... to me that picture is 100% Spice Up Your Life and imo it looked lazy to reuse it for Greatest Hits).

I'm not great at Photoshop but I wanted to see how this "Yoto" artwork would look as a vinyl artwork, so I had a go and made this:

Oh I quite like this version, thanks Jay!

I would LOVE LOVE an updated GH with this new cover for sure, maybe for its anniversary?... BUT I still want the original cover on vinyl, that is a MUST at least once... It's such a legendary cover imo

Me too! Crazy that they've not done a vinyl with the original cover yet
By the way, today's date 25th November marks 17 years since we found out that Headlines was at #11 in the UK chart :teresa:

A dreadful day  I believe it was this that made them scared of ever making new music ever since... :(

What a BOTCHED release though... it was truly awful how they went on about it. Headlines isn't even a bad song, just the whole package was so dissapointing.

PLUS, the fact that two girlbands of the time managed to outsell them that week with their (much much better!) own singles... tragic really

Edited by Mr.X

A tragic week  I looked back at some midweek information from then and saw it was midweek #9 for most of the week!

It was only 400 or so behind #10... I feel like if there had been a CD1 and CD2 set (which was still a thing in 2007!) then they'd have probably held on. But the release schedule of download one week, then Greatest Hits and then finally the cd single... silly!!

Also found out that Children in Need aired on Friday 16th November, three days before the CD single came out <_< so if anyone was at the shops on Saturday, it wasn't there to buy.

Think it would have made way more sense to release Headlines CD on 12th November and Greatest Hits on 19th November... Greatest Hits would still have easily made it to #2 in that week too, and maybe Headlines would have got Top 10 a week earlier without Greatest Hits taking away any potential sales from it.

I will never ever get over Headlines going to #11.

It was the total wrong single in the first place and everything about it's promotion was hideous, the video, the lack of performances except on CIN, the choice of a slow ballad and not an upbeat proper single.

But then they totally botched up the release choosing to release it a week after the album release and then doing the whole on download first and the physical two weeks later!? Wtf? If they had released the physical in the same week as the download they would at the very least have managed a #3 position which would have been much more respectable and kept an unbroken top 3 streak. Who knows if we had the whole close to #2 thing then fans would likely have gone out and bought another ten copies, I'm ashamed to say I would have done at that time lol.

They and Simon were just too cocky and lazy, convinced they would achieve a #1 off the back of it being 5 Spice Girls, a CIN single. #3 I could live with as it is at least better than Downtown which achieved #3 the year before!

And I say all this as someone who genuinely enjoys the song Headlines, it's a beautiful (album) track.
The Headlines debacle (as it shall forever be called ) was a miserable time. :( The fact that they missed the #1 with the album and then ruined their top 2/top 10 streak with a messy singles release. :( They should've just released Never Give Up On The Good Times if they couldn't find a good enough comeback single.

I hated Westlife for that, they deliberately moved their album forwards a week to fight with the girls again causing the girls to move forwards a week against Leona, a battle they had NO chance of winning! If Westlife had released in their week and left Spice Girls alone then all 3 would have achieved #1 albums. That would at least have helped soften the Headlines blow a little, and if they had released Headlines properly all in one go then a #1 and a #3 would have been a resounding success!

Apparently Kevsie is saying that it's not legit, but not elaborating on how he knows.

The product description on the Rough Trade site matches the exact text from the 2020 release, so it might just be a case of Rough Trade accidentally attaching the CD/digital artwork on the product page, but it's just the usual version with the Spice Up Your Life picture artwork. If that's the case, that's a shame! I really want the GH on vinyl with the original artwork!
