"Come With Me Now" was a massive grower for me having not liked it at first. "I Want To Know" is another great Kongos track if you haven't heard it.

"Coming Home" is also brilliant, "Best Day Of My Life" not so much.

Lazaretto was what made me think twice about Jack White, I've never been that keen on him but I really took notice of that track. Would You Fight For My Love is even better for me though, that humming

Every Other Freckle is the clear highlight of This Is All Yours for me too, I agree, very weird but it all works so well. the 'ooooo devour me' parts are heavenly

New York Morning

Elbow

Album: The Take Off and Landing of Everything

Up next, we have the world’s classiest band with “New York Morning”. The song is classic Elbow wistfulness, which ranks up amongst “Lippy Kids” and “Asleep at The Back” as one of their most beautiful, introspective songs.

I'd say I've found 'The Take Off....' their most disappointing album, and whilst I've loved four of its singles this is the only one of them which I've continued to love and go back to so often. It definitely is one of their best ever.

Budapest

George Ezra

Album: Wanted on Voyage

One of the biggest songs of 2014. “Budapest” is the sort of song that is going to be regarded as a classic standard 20 years from now, and it’s not hard to hear why. Just simple, heartfelt & supreme.

Gooey

Glass Animals

Album: Zaba

One of the most sensual songs of the year from Glass Animals, whom I had the pleasure of seeing whilst in Nebraska. “Gooey” is a wonderful little electronic song, even with its strange lyrics, referencing peanut butter and Winnie the Pooh amongst other things.

Dripping Down

East India Youth

Album: Total Strife Forever

More electronica now, this time from Mercury nominated East India Youth. “Dripping Down” is a fantastically layered song that builds into something brilliant.

Where The Wild Are

Southern

Album: Where The Wild Are E.P

We’re back to Northern Ireland now for the sibling duo, Thom & Lucy Southern. The band first released “Where The Wild Are” back in 2012 in a more breezy form. This year they re-recorded it as a blues-rock song, taking the song in a different direction and making it even more awesome. The band have been building up a big following this year, and recently signed to Jagwar Ma’s record label, so here’s hoping we’ve got a lot more in store for the band in 2015.

Centre Straight Atom

Kassassin Street

Album: N/A

Kassassin Street are a Portsmouth based electro-rock band. Their song “Centre Straight Atom” is a fantastic example of Kasabian-esque in-your-facery. Another group who deserve to smash next year.

Stitch Yourself Up

Little Matador

Album: Little Matador

Little Matador is the side project of Nathan Connolly, best known as the guitarist from Snow Patrol. But hold that to one side for one moment, for “Stitch Yourself Up” has nothing of Chasing Cars about it. It’s a primal, guttural rock song with a real bite.

Solo Dancing

Indiana

Album: No Romeo

Up next is “Solo Dancing” from Indiana. It’s a song that transcended the blogs to crash straight into the charts earlier this year, and it’s no wonder why – it’s a fantastic sensual, yet incredibly smart pop song that builds into something fabulous.

Changes

Faul & Wad Ad vs PNAU

Album: N/A

The first sax-house song to become a hit in 2014, and by my estimation, the best. French duo Faul & Wad Ad took a sample of a children’s choir from a song by Australian duo Pnau (one of their side-projects, Empire of The Sun, topped my countdown back in 2009 with “Walking On A Dream), and turned it into “Changes”, an incredibly summery, life-affirming dance tune.

Ambulance Song

Rainy Boy Sleep

Album: Waiting Games

Derry singer-songwriter Rainy Boy Sleep signed to Universal Records Ireland this year, and his debut release for the new label was “Ambulance Song”, which like the song before it employs a children’s choir to great effect. An absolutely gorgeous chorus on this to boot too.

Cucurucu

Nick Mulvey

Album: First Mind

Congratulation to Nick Mulvey and “Cucurucu”, which is the highest placed song on the countdown to make the UK top 40. The song is a gorgeous folk song, which from unassuming beginnings builds up into something explosive and brilliant.

Solo dancing is very good and I used to love Budapest but I am so bored of it now

Changes is amazing and I love the saxophone in it

Parallels

Eels

Album: The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett

I'm genuinely surprised that "Parallels" by Eels was never really pushed as a single/buzz track/stream enticer in 2014, as it's the best song that Mark Oliver Everett has committed to tape in yonks. The song is a tribute to his quantum mechanist father's Parallel Worlds Theory, with the song imagining that there is a timeline out there where he is still alive and happy. A song that is absolutely stunning in its simplicity.

Something Right And Something Real

In An Instant

Album: Light You Know and Love E.P

After getting us incredibly excited with a batch of demos last year, Bangor boys In An Instant finally gave us their first set of official tracks this year, with the highlight being "Something Right & Something Real". The song sees the band meld rock with electronic production in such a way that hadn't been done so successfully by a local act since fellow Bangor boys Two Door Cinema Club.

Red Eyes

The War On Drugs

Album: Lost In The Dream

The 2nd track from The War on Drugs to make the countdown. "Red Eyes" is a driving rock tune that has one foot in the 80s and one in the here and now.

Call Sign

Go Swim

Album: Animal E.P

"Call Sign" by Go Swim can best be described as a manic version of "Inhaler" by Foals. Vocalists Steven and Julianne perform dual lead vocals, singing manic, alternating lyrics which both compliment and oppose each other at the same time, whilst the rhythm of the track changes from intense to danceable almost at the drop of a hat, without feeling jarring or out of place. It felt like a real breath of fresh air when it came out in February, and many months later it still retains that intensity and instantness.

Old Man

Billy Lockett

Album: N/A

It takes a lot for a song to make me cry, but Billy Lockett managed to do that with "Old Man", a heartfelt tribute to his father, who died earlier this year. It is an absolutely gorgeous piano-pop song that had all the hallmarks of a monster radio hit about it, and although it did not become the ultimate smash that it deserved to be, it did touch a lot of people emotionally, myself included.
