Jealous is amazing, really hope they swap the release over to that here in the UK when launching the album.. Such a strong pop song, incredibly catchy too, just can't stop singing it out. Not sure if he'd pick up good radio support either way though which is a shame.

Yeah you're probably right :( Radio lapped it up in the US though!

14 Beyoncé - XO

UK peak: #22

US peak: #45

My peak: #1

Beyoncé rounded 2013 perfectly with a surprise release of her self titled album, which sent the world into a buzz. This was the lead single, which began to impact in January 2014 and was one of my first big hits of the year. Penned by Ryan Tedder, this is a very safe song and obvious lead single compared to other "out there" tracks on the album that cross many genres such as Haunted and Partition, but it's so joyous and uplifting <3 It's a shame that the unconventional album release made it hard to this to smash though :( The video is one of my favourites on the visual album too!

Another one of 2014's first hits here was this gorgeous song <3 Katy was largely known for her club bangers (although the lovely Broken Record was the highlight of the last era and was a top 10 hit), but this led her Little Red album perfectly. Vocally, this is nothing short of stunning and perfect for her underrated voice, and the sparse instrumental allows her talent to shine. Add to that lyrics that anyone can relate to a certain point in their life, and you've definitely got a winning combination!

:D

XO is stunning, huge shame it was overshadowed by DIL and they couldn't both smash at the same time. Just a huge song which feels really heartfelt too, was my initial favourite on BEYONCÉ.

I obviously really like DIL as it's in my countdown, but it's so overrated :( it's a shame that it's the only real hit from the era when it's such an astounding album that there's like 6 or 7 better songs on the album.

12 Lea Michele - Cannonball

UK peak: #56

US peak: #75

My peak: #1

(2-3-2-3-6-1-3-5-7-10-10-10-8-11-16-20-24-27-30-36-41-48-55-62-65-69-72) // 27wks

Another early 2014 hit (sadly just in my chart, not the UK)! Lea is best known for portraying the once annoying, now essential broadway obsessed diva Rachel Berry on Glee, but she branched out in 2014 with a solo album. Instead of the show tunes she often sings in character, Lea's album features pop, rock, dance and R&B influences. This, the lead single, is a Sia penned track and whilst it isn't anything revolutionary (it's kind of typical Sia) it perfectly suits her voice and could be easily have been recorded by an iconic diva such as Céline Dion.

11 Demi Lovato ft. Cher Lloyd - Really Don't Care

UK peak: #92

US peak: #26

My peak: #1 (2013), #3 (2014)

(5-1-3-3-2-5-12-16-23-25-32-37-45-49-54-62-64-xx-5-3-3-3-5-6-9-12-18-21-26-36-45-49-56-61-68) // 34 n/c wks (first run in 2013)

The highest entry from Demi, who scored a year end #1 in 2013 with Heart Attack, is the 4th single from her self titled album (which was also my #1 album is 2013)! Featuring X Factor alumni Cher Lloyd, this is a thoroughly fun pop song which has Demi slating an ex and writing him out of her life completely by dropping any feelings she has and learning to just not care. It's a little generic, but it was such an obvious single from the first listen of the album - the chanty nature of it just makes it so catchy. It's impossible not to sing along. Having already peaked at #1 in 2013 as an album track, Really Don't Care re-entered to spend three more weeks in the top 3 and lengthen its chart run considerably in 2014.

Really Don't Care is her bestest song ever, I luv it SO much

10 Indila - Derniére danse

UK peak: N/A

US peak: N/A (#1 France)

My peak: #1

Kicking off the top 10 is the highest foreign language song and the highest BJSC entry! This was a landslide winner for Daehun (Oricon) at the start of the year, and also a megahit in Indila's home country of France. The best way I have seen this described is "a modern tske on Edith Piaf via Lana Del Rey", which is accurate imo. This song is just gorgeous, the French language is a perfect fit for Indila's smooth vocals and the waltzy instrumental, and when you really look at the lyrics they're really something special too. The song started to spread through some of Europe, but it sadly had/has no chance in England in this form. And I wouldn't want it to be translated to English, because in the process it would lose so much of the magic that makes it essential as it is.

09 Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX - Fancy

UK peak: #5

US peak: #1

My peak: (38-31-28-8-9-8-11-8-11-13-2-4-7-9-11-15-17-21-25-29-35-38-43-45-50-56-65-74) // 28wks

A more familiar song now, one of the biggest worldwide hits of the year from Igloo Australia - the highest entry for both her and Charli who have been seen in this countdown already! This was a huge grower, as I thought it would bomb and end her career initially  Once it hit me though, it was firmly set as amazing! The electro-hop instrumental, Iggy's fierce flow and Charli's Gwen Stefani etc. chorus all combine to create one of those perfect rap songs where I feel I just had to listen again and again until I knew all of the rap (now it's tough to resist rapping along every damn time!) - and it has one of the best videos of the year. In fact it might be the very best, how can it be anything less than incredible when it's inspired so much by Clueless?

08 Ricki-Lee - Mirage

UK peak: N/A

US peak: N/A

My peak: #1

(58-37-1-1-1-2-4-6) // 8wks *still charting*

The most floppy song in the top 10 is a gorgeous ballad from Australian flop pop queen Ricki-Lee - there is one more Aussie song to come in a second (a trio of Auspop *.*). Undoubtedly a career highlight, this failed to make the Australian top 100 with a single release :( Despite her vocal prowess impressing on Idol, this is the first time in her career since that she's really shown her voice off in what is one of the best vocal performances of the year in my opinions. This is so relatable for anyone who's ever wanted someone they couldn't have (ie everyone), and her powerful yet fragile voice emotes pretty much every word perfectly. I had to include the embedded video so there's no excuse to not listen as I've made it so easy :kink:

07 Jessica Mauboy - Never Be The Same

UK peak: N/A

US peak: N/A (#6 Australia)

My peak: #1

(23-8-1-2-5-6-10-14-18-21-25-33-36-42-47-51-56-29-34-40-46-50-54-57-62-15-21-27-39-44-49-56-60-66) // 34wks *still charting*

This is the highest Aussie song (there have been many!) and also the longest runner of the year! At first, I have to admit I was sceptical about this as a single choice, and thought Kiss Me Hello would be the most viable ballad single :o But pretty much as soon as it was released, this was a solid hit for me and it has grown to become my favourite on the album <3 Whilst Jessica is versatile enough to smash uptempo dance-pop, R&B jams and midtempo ballads among other things, I do always love her mid-tempo Jordin Sparks esque ballads. The video is lovely too. This had a couple of big resurgences to aid its chart run! The first was when she performed Sea Of Flags at Eurovision and I was obsessed with all of her stuff again as a result (when am I not tho?) and the next was after her epic duet with X Factor Australia winner Marlisa, who smashed this song herself at bootcamp! This is firmly one of my favourite Jess songs, although Burn is probably impossible to beat

I'm all caught up now Liam, yay!

From the tracks on this page: 'Crying For No Reason', 'Cannonball' and 'Fancy' are all incredible!

06 Taylor Swift - Blank Space

UK peak: #4

US peak: #1

My peak: #1

(15-6-2-2-2-4-3-1) // 8wks *still charting*

Just falling short of a top 5 double shot (omg spoilerz!!11!1) is the new queen of pop Taylor Swift. Her 2014 has incredible, and this rounded it off by being another huge hit! The song has been compared to Lorde, but has a spark that only Taylor can bring to songs as well as of course the usual lyrical magic! As always, Taylor has a knack of making you relate to songs that aren't even a situation you've ever faced... It's just so effortless and catchy and glorious! Despite all of the flawless tracks on 1989, this is among the best and a perfect single that was always going to be a hit from listen #1.

Blank Space :cheer:

Very impackful for a track released as late as that

04 Katy Perry ft. Juicy J - Dark Horse

This is actually a 2013 song and peaked then, but as a single it shone mostly in 2014! Whilst I love Unconditionally, it was a bit baffling this wasn't released as the second single... But still, this was third and at least got to smash. It's different from anything in Katy's discography, as it has a trap beat pulsing throughout, and soars above pretty much anything else on Prism (the pop perfection of Roar aside). This feels like one of those songs that couldn't be sung by anybody else for some reason, and I'm so glad it was absolutely massive after Unconditionally sadly flopped.
