Yaaaaaaaay so glad that's finally finished - I was really running out of positive adjectives and adverbs towards the end there! I've definitely enjoyed doing this though, despite how much time it took me and I really appreciate the interest in it and all the comments throughout! Thanks! :D

Yep, I definitely didn't call that #1. Or Years & Years #2 either, both are lovely songs but if I was going to think anything for your #1 it would have been Katy B.

Very lovely noahstalgic countdown Noah, I've enjoyed reading it (and I should have commented before now) and I like how you make it clear how you like the song (funnily enough it was the other way round for me with Magic, I started to prefer A Sky Full Of Stars as it came out even though I really loved it at the beginning, but I agree with you on the lovely lyrics it has). Relax now - that's what I did when I finished mine!

Can very much get behind that number 1  Was a really great song and was a great harkening back to their Parachutes era. I can't say anything you haven't already said about it, it's simple and brilliant. Take Shelter's good as well, I've been getting into Years & Years lately, their new single, King, is really great.

I like most of what I do know in that top 20 and even for those I haven't heard, I've really enjoyed your rather perceptive commentary on all of them, nice job!

'Magic' is very lovely, and like you it really didn't grab me until a few listens in. I haven't really returned to it much (or anything off the album) but it was v pleasant.

Don't think i've heard your #2 song :kink: i will get on it soon though as i now trust your judgement! Edit: listening now and liking :music:

'Crying For No Reason' is stunning, obviously. A part of me is slightly dubious that as this was so well recieved, she'll continue to do ballad after ballad in the future (see the release of 'Still' directly after it), but really, it's another area she shines in so i guess i wouldn't mind it too much. I need a '5AM' style comeback from her though *.*

Fantastic countdown, very enjoyable to read and so insightful. Here's to another year of Noahstalgic wonders~

This. was. excellent.

Crying For No Reason never clicked with me the way it did for everyone else, but the intro is undeniably powerful, especially the final line "now the pain is hitting me full force" which indeed hit me full force :heehee:. I'd compare that pause to the aforementioned peak moment of Yellow Flicker Beat, actually! Such a sigh of relief to see her land another proper hit, but too bad it didn't give much momentum to her next single.

Take Shelter was a much-appreciated recommendation and Magic is such a worthy winner. There's a subtle anthemic (or triumphant? :o) nature to it that makes it sound perfect for ending a countdown. (Makes me wish I'd put the band of the same name as my #1 :magic:)

Had happily forgotten about this thread after it took up an inordinate amount of my time over the last while but the comments haven't gone unnoticed so thanks! :D

Appreciate that! Was a real struggle for some of them cos it's hard to put into words why certain songs appeal to me and I'd just blank. Had to listen to some of them like five times in a row to think of anything that made any sort of sense!

And that's interesting - 'A Sky Full Of Stars' was a huge grower for me but yeah, obviously it never got near 'Magic'.

Ha, I was thinking it'd be a bit underwhelming for a lot of people but I knew you'd approve at the very least! Not really familiar with the 'Parachutes' era as a whole so hadn't considered that.

'King' is superb and I have high hopes for its hit potential.

That's great to hear, thanks!

Yeah that's an appropriate word for it and I didn't particularly want my #1 to be a song that could be described as 'pleasant' but it just wins me over in so many other ways that I can't deny it and go with a more ~inspired~ choice! :drama:

Amazed you hadn't heard 'Take Shelter' :o but not surprised that you like it! Still their best for me, despite loving 'King' more and more each day.

Yeah, well I think the fact 'Still' did nothing may (hopefully) discourage the ballad strategy and I agree completely about a '5AM' style comeback. That's my favourite song of hers. I thought at the time that 'Still' was too similar to CFNR to catch on but it does sound single-worthy and flopped surprisingly hard. In a perfect world 'Aaliyah' would have returned her to the top 10 and given Jessie her first one.

Cheers, loved reading yours for the same reasons!

You're great with the moments, aren't you?! Yep, that 'full force' one is a stunner - nice to see you appreciate it despite not being a big fan of the song.

Haha, it is indeed subtly anthemic and triumphant but I feared I'd absolutely rinsed those adjectives dry throughout so didn't mention that! I agree though - it makes for a nice conclusion I feel.

Thanks again for all your thoughts!

Your number one is gorgeous, a personal chart number one for me as well! Great stuff.

eek noah, apologies for not dropping by again. i just forgot to keep checking back in this subforum :(

magic is really stunning, never ever liked much from coldplay but this took me by surprise completely. i wasn't against it hanging around in the charts at all, it was so simplistic but the vocals just made the track feel really warm. liked ink and true love from this era too although ASFOS was AWFUL :( still not a converted coldplay fan though oops.

never really got take shelter either, it never left any impression on me at all and i think desire and also now king are just revamped versions that are much much better. i seem to be alone in thinking that though as everyone on here seems to like take shelter lots!
