Posted December 15, 201410 yr We reach the K's and, like the J's, we have almost 300 entries so this section is formed of 3 parts A reminder of the notes and conventions used in creating the data: 1. The first rule is that all rules have exceptions, common sense (and my own inconsistencies) may sometimes take precedence 2. Act names - I've tried to reflect the act names as given on the charts, occasionally this is different from that shown on the label or sleeve/cover. If the chart credit is undeniably wrong (e.g. "Elizabethan Reggae") then common sense has been used. An initial "The" from artists names has almost always been dropped, a separator of "And" is usually replaced with an ampersand. 3. Personal names - I have tried to show "real" names of performers where possible, middle names are not shown unless they have some relevance to the stage name (e.g. it would not make sense to show Rihanna's real name as just Robyn Fenty). Where the name an individual goes by is a standard short form of his/her given name (e.g. if someone known as Andy is really an Andrew), I normally haven't bothered showing this. Diactritics are shown where possible, but the software used in compiling the data has difficult with some non-ASCII characters, and the ý in Mýa. I have not shown artist names in anything other than the Latin script, so for artists whose "real" names are written in Cyrillic, Burmese or Korean for instance, I have used the transliteration as normally shown on the charts. Artists from Northern Ireland are shown thus, rather than being from either the UK or Ireland which hopefully will reduce arguments! 4. Dates of birth/death - Shown where I have found these while checking out other details. Any additional information gladly received 5. Band membership - Normally relates to their hitmaking period only. Changes in personnel before or after this are very rarely shown. Members are normally shown in alphabetical order (but with some exceptions - e.g. Crosby, Stills & Nash are treated in that order) for either the debut hit or the main part of the groups career, with changes usually noted in chronological order 6. Featured artists - This got complex! Where a combination of lead/featured artist ONLY had hit(s) together (e.g. Gotye featuring Kimbra) they are only shown as effectively one act. Where the lead artist has had other hits but the featured one isn't, the lead artist only has a separate full entry. Where either the featured artist has other credits, or both do, both have individual entries. The same (more or less) works with normal duos - for instance Simon & Garfunkel's hits are listed under both Art Garfunkel's and Paul Simon's solo careers. 6a The OCC has sometimes changed the credit shown on the chart during a chart run. In such cases I have tried to use the most inclusive credit. 7. Where a record has been in the charts as both a "normal" A-side and a Double A-Side (whether in combination with a track by the same artist or a different artist), it is shown with separate lines (e.g. "Last Christmas" by Wham!) 8. When a record has re-entered the chart with a different artist credit, I have normally amassed the two together (e.g. "Woman In Chains"). Which artist credit I have used depends on the song itself, and a note is attached showing that an alternate credit exists. 9. Remixes/Re-Recordings/Live Versions used to be charted separately and are shown as different hits, but current practice is for all versions to be collected and charted together, so for any chart runs of such tracks since the advent of the download era are normally added to the original hit version 10. Labels and catalogue numbers are completely omitted 11. EP/LP tracks are shown where known when the chart entry was credited to an EP/LP. If an EP was released on two different CD singles, it is usually the tracks of CD1 that are listed 12. Most of the "bio" information comes straight from Wikipedia (to save time), so there is the likelihood that a number of the entries contain mistakes. Please let me know of any of these, or if there's anything that you think is significant enough to be mentioned. I have tried to keep opinions out of them, and kept references to genres to a minimum as those tend to cause more disagreements than almost anything else. Honours such as knighthoods, OBE's etc. are shown. Oscars, Grammys & Brits are a work in progress and will eventually all be shown, less high profile awards (e.g. MOBOs, Mercury Prize, etc.) are unlikely to be listed unless a particular artist has achieved something extraordinary. 12a Close family relationships between hitmakers are shown where possible, and also in some cases to other famous people (e.g. it made no sense to write even a sketchy bio for Jane Wyman and not mention she was married to Ronald Reagan) 13. Cross-references ("See also....") are a work in progress, as are the marking of US number ones. Expect these to get more comprehensive as the series goes on 14. Alphabetisation - artists whose name is an acronym (and is pronounced as such), e.g. ABC are sorted as if the name is a series of spaced letters (i.e. A B C). All such acts are listed at the start of those with that initial. Where an acronymic (?) name is usually voiced as a word (e.g. ABBA) then it is indexed under that word. Numbers are treated as if they are spelled out, punctuation is ignored. Individuals are indexed firstly under their surname then their given name(s). For some artists, it can be difficult to determine whether a name is a given name followed by a surname, or whether the whole thing is to be treated as one name. In these cases (most of which involve seem to involve rappers), I have tried to use the sorting sequence used for that artist within Wikipedia categories. 15. Where an artist has had hits under two (or more) different names, they are merged (e.g. Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus). With some combinations (usually European production outfits), it can sometimes be difficult to identity which pairings work under which names! 16. Nationalities - I've tried to use the nationalities where people grew up rather than the place they happened to be born. Where there is some difference of opinion I have usually come down on one side of the coin or the other. Large groups are given under the likely most-common nationality (e.g. the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is shown as Austrian, even if a number of them may not have been). Club football teams of the modern era are usually shown as "Mostly British". Anonymous cover version acts may be shown without nationality. Where a country has changed name since the person was born, I have no hard and fast rule about which name to use but hopefully this should be clear either way. I was intending to reach part 46 (i.e Halfway) by the end of 2014 so even taking into account the time I missed recovering from my shoulder operation, I'm not too far behind. This will probably be the last part of 2014, I am going to spend the Christmas period bringing all the previous parts up to date, both with further information that has come to light since the original postings, and to include all the 2014 hits. So to Part 44. R Kelly's career has been blighted with several court cases and accusations, most of which have not led to convictions, but a lot of the mud has stuck. Ronan Keating has had a hugely successful career, both with Boyzone and as a solo artist. Kelis has had more Top 10s (9) than I would have given her credit for, but has not had a lead artist hit for over 4 years now. We also have a bunch of 2000s British bands in this group - Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs & Keane to the fore. The 80s are represented by Kajagoogoo and Katrina & The Waves (who of course made a Eurovision-related comeback in the 90s), The 60s by Eden Kane and the 70s by KC & The Sunshine Band. Others who reached number one - KWS, Peter Kay, Kitty Kallen, the Kalin Twins & Jerry Keller, plus the inimitable KLF, who I think I have listed all their hitmaking aliases, but wouldn't be surprised if one or two have slipped through the net. December 22, 201410 yr Author So I did have the time to put together another batch before Christmas. The stand out artists in this group include Kings Of Leon, whose two massive long runners account for a large proportion of their weeks on chart, Alicia Keys, Kesha (or Ke$ha if you must), and the Killers. Less tolerably, Jonathan King and all his aliases is also included, and Wiz Khalifa has racked up more success (mainly as a featured artist) than I thought he had. Chaka Khan had a number one that is perhaps more memorable for Melle Mel's rap than her own contribution, Carole King was way more successful as a songwriter than a singer (although she does have one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 70s. Kiesza may well be on the way to having the same career path after the follow-ups to "Hideaway" haven't really taken off. Ben E King reached number one 20 years too late after "Stand By Me" was featured in a Levi's advert, Nicole Kidman is more of an actress than a singer (way, way more) and the only other number one act in this group is Johnny Kidd & The Pirates As you can probably see, I drew a blank regarding the members of Kicking Back with Taxman, I'll keep looking though. Finally, thanks to all the contributors of these threads over 2014. I suspect there was some scepticism when I started that this might be a project too far, but with all the help from members of this forum, we are just about halfway through and looking strong to get the whole job completed by the end of 2015. I know there will always be minor disagreements about what should be included and what shouldn't, and how some things should be presented, but we're all generally moving in the same direction and working together for a resource that can be used by the members long term.

December 22, 201410 yr Just checked the Graham Betts book and he didn't know who Kicking Back with Taxman were either. I even looked at YouTube comments in case somebody had said "that's me!" Odd because they obviously weren't trying to be anonymous.
December 22, 201410 yr Thanks for your excellent work so far. I look forward to seeing this continue in the new year. As you say, no two people will ever agree on the ideal method of presentation etc. but yours comes pretty close to what I would have done. In hindsight, the only significant thing I would have done differently would have been to distinguish between different versions of the same song and different songs with the same name. Obviously, if you don't have that recorded anywhere, it would be a very big task to rectify that now. In the meantime, have a great Christmas :cheer:

January 14, 201510 yr Author Back again for 2015! I had intended this post to have been produced about 10 days ago, but my PC died and I have had to transfer all the data and software to a new machine and check to see if everything was still working. Anyway, here is the final part of the K's with the likes of Kool & The Gang, Gladys Knight & The Pips and Beverly Knight from the soul side of things, The Kinks, The Kooks, Kiss and Lenny Kravitz representing different guitar-based sounds, Sean Kingston from a short of hybrid soul-reggae land and Krafterk, firmly from Synth-land. Also reaching number one - Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas and Fern Kinney. Whatever happened to Fern Kinney? All parts from A to G were updated to the end of December (to chart dated 27/12/14). I'll continue regular updates of previously posted parts, with the relevant cut-off point shown in the thread sub-title, with H, I & J getting a makeover with the last January dated chart. L's to start next week, I think I'm OK for the first batch (of 5) but may have some queries about later acts which I will put out there next Monday (when I will be back on a regularly updating schedule).
January 14, 201510 yr Kinks - Supersonic Rocket Ship has its first week wrongly split from the rest. Kevin K*tchen's name (replace the * with an 'i') has gone a bit wrong... Alani Gibbon of Kleshay was also in Anotherside. Apart from that, great stuff as usual!

That'd be because the word 'kitchen' was added to this site's spam filter in an attempt to ward off spam accounts trying to sell kitchens (which seems to have worked as I haven't seen one of those threads in some time). It can be evaded by sticking tags in the middle of the word like so ki[i][/i]tchen
