'Tough Love' is sublime  a shame the rest of the era didn't live up to this but i am glad we got this at least! 'Hunger of the Pine' is fab too, very brave and odd and kool and urban and good ~

'Thinking Out Loud' i use, and i have given in to my disdain for Ed by listening to 'x' now :magic: 'Drunk In Love' is a beast.

Marina das smelly FLOP #6 :o :o :o :o :o :o i am shocked at the position of this song in your EOY countdown :o :o

Love all the last few, even 'Giant In My Heart' which is a huge improvement on 'Hideaway'. Shocked 'Froot' has been ousted to #6 though!

I'm thinking 'Changing' and 'Crying For No Reason' could be contenders for the top spot :o

Oh yey, you like 'Giant in My Heart'! Too good to deny~

:o

Froot is a lot lower than I expected here. Contrary to every one else I'm not hugely feeling Marina this era despite liking her previous too. Froot is nice but a bit too weird for me, Happy is also nice but a bit boring and Immortal is bloody awful, not sure why she decided wailing like a banshee was a good idea but I think that'll be one track I skip. Hope she pulls it out the bag regardless because she's a fantastic artist.

Oh no, that's a shame to hear!

As you can see, she's remaining perfect for me so far. 'Immortal' isn't as as good as the other two for me yet but that's a tough accomplishment to achieve anyway.

Wait WHAT!

Number 6!?

NO FWOOT, this is too sad, I can't believe this

omg I'm sorry

Six is a VERY respectable placing, we're long past even the 11/10s. These are all very special moments and it's hard to place them all. 'Froot' was not frooty enough to be the Top Froot of 2014.

It might not have lived up to it but it's still grown on me very strongly, 'You & I (Forever)' and 'Champagne Kisses' in particular!

Representing Alt-J as a band then B-)

Stanning for Ed more than me then considering four 'x' songs are in my Top 200 and I've not even listened to the album yet ooops

I'm scared Marina will get dropped because of her floppy placing in my EOY

05. Sia - Chandelier

There’s not much more I can say about ’Chandelier’ that hasn’t already been said across the internet, and indeed on this very site (in fact it’s probably best just to read Haus’ commentary when he unleashes it!). I do have to admit however, that on the first few listens, I wasn’t overly impressed by it and I didn’t seek out to listen to it again until the breathtaking video. It has to be one of the videos of the year and, what made it more special were the TV performances that helped to replicate it. Of the song itself, it contains one of, if not the, most powerful choruses leading into my favourite part ‘I am holding on for dear life, won’t look down, won’t open my eyes’. It may get criticisms over the cracks in the vocals but that’s what makes it more special (although I wouldn’t like to see this replicated by other artists).

04. Sigma feat Paloma Faith - Changing

It’s always exciting and interesting when an artist tries something completely different to what you are used to from them as a one-off. One of my main highlights have been Florence’s collaborations with Calvin Harris as her voice unexpectedly works so well on a dance track. (As I said though, one-off please x). Therefore, it was very exciting to hear Paloma was going dance and the result, ’Changing’ was better than I ever expected. Her vocals really do elevate the song and work so well. The reason I’ve placed it so high, and why I love it so much, is that it feels so anthemic for me due to the vocals, the strings and, most importantly, the lyrics all combining together. The lyrics may not be too hard to read into, and indeed, there may not be many of them but, in a year where my life has considerably changed after I have indeed been 'going through the same things’ and at a moment when I’m realising that it will be changing even more drastically in the upcoming years, they do scream out to me. It feels like an anthem for the position of where I am in my life and that is why it resonates with me so much.

03. Mark Ronson feat Bruno Mars – Uptown Funk

Mark Ronson has produced two of my all-time favourite albums in his time as a lead artist (‘Here Comes the Fuzz’ is alright too) as well as contributing to some big hits. However, I had come to doubt whether they would ever be a return as a lead artist again. So, I was over the moon with the unexpected news of a new single premiering with Bruno Mars and when I heard it, I was immediately hooked. I would still never have dreamed a comeback would have been a tenth as big as ’Uptown Funk’ has been though and I’m thrilled. It’s affecting the nation in a similar vein to ‘Happy’, although sounding even bigger and, of course, better. The production is obviously perfect, throwing us back to the time of FUNK and Bruno owns it throughout, it’s so good to hear him in a fun song not singing about love. Also, THIS is how you do brass breakdowns (none of that demo-inspired rubbish as seen in another No. 1 this year). The whole things so infectious, cool and FUNKy :funky:

Clean Bandit feat Jess Glynne - Rather Be

vs.

Katy B - Crying for No Reason

It's been a constant battle throughout the year between them both and so it couldn't be any other Top 2 but which will be the ultimate winner? Will Katy fall at the final hurdle for the second year in a row? :o

:heehee: @ your commentary for 'Chandelier' BUT you really did take all the words out of my mouth with what you said there. And i am glad you appreciate the cracks in the vocals too because that's what makes it even more special for me.

'Changing' is k, if a little basique~ :heehee: @ Paloma in the video still.

OOH v funky~ start to the top 3 :funky: i hope phresh songs such as 'Happy', 'Counting Stars' and 'All Of Me' feature similarly highly when you do your 2015 countdown

ARGH the top 2. ALL my love and support going to 'Crying For No Reason' for the win but #2 would be ok for her too ~ give it to us :o

I knew your commentary for 'Chandelier' would be perfect and it didn't disappoint! Only Sia can pull the vocal cracks off!

As an expert in phresh music, how could I deny those songs to feature in the 2015 EOY! :music:

Well it's TIME!

02. Clean Bandit feat Jess Glynne – Rather Be

It has been a VERY close battle between ‘Crying for No Reason’ and ’Rather Be’ as they really are on par with each other for different reasons and it really could not have been any other Top 2 in terms of representing my 2014. It was a battle between what it meant to represent my 2014, a song surrounding in glorious memories or a song that shines in it’s amazing quality. It was the latter that won and so I’ll explore the former here…

‘Rather Be’ really does represent the happiness that I felt throughout the year. The beautiful string opening that transitioning into the glorious dance beat perfects Clean Bandit’s sound taking it to a whole other level. The mix of instruments as it builds into the chorus is what makes it so magical for me. The whole thing just sounds so refreshing and unique with everything elevated by Jess’ glorious, understated vocals. It’s impossible not to sing along to the chorus without a massive grin on your face. Perhaps that’s just me though because this song is surrounded full of memories for me that begin right at the start of one of my favourite ever years and last throughout. There was no place that I’d rather be.

01. Katy B – Crying for No Reason

Yes, ’Crying for No Reason’ may not have been surrounded in as many memories but it is the best song of 2014 when taking in quality and it's allowed Katy to gain my EOY No. 1 after just missing out last year! Katy’s style is dance music so it was a surprise when she unveiled a slower and more intimate side to her. The first minute was the most stripped back we’d heard from her before the song transitions into a more powerful electro beat. It complements the song so well and so it’s nice to have the instrumental at the end to allow it to shine through. The highlight though is the lyrics and Katy’s perfect vocal, showing herself to be amongst Britain’s very best. Each lyric is essential, highlighting the pain that she is going through. My favourite part is the middle 8 where she’s speaking directly to her lover, admitting her problems and asking for forgiveness. I love her when she's doing her dance stuff but CFNO and 'Still' have seen her explore an amazing different side to her that's beautiful to see. 'Little Red' is one of my favourite albums of 2014 and I'm excited to see what she brings in her next chapter.

Seriously wonderful winner  i have so much love for it as a song, and i am secretly GUTTED that i included it in last year's countdown and went on to snub it from this year as it's a clear top 10 for me. But oh well, it has its glory here which is what matters.

She is fab doing the dance stuff, and who knew she'd be fab at this side too? Stunning in every way and a perfect ending.

Keep it phresh keep it kool keep it k :funky: :music:

SMASH it Kathleen!!! :w00t:

Obviously love your #1 but would have been happy enough with a 'Rather Be' win too - both clear highlights of the year for me as well.

Loved reading the countdown, very well done! Probably the most overlap that mine has with any other :o (haven't checked fo sho) and I've really liked a lot of your inclusions which missed mine (or in the case of Chloe Howl and others, were accidental omissions :drama:). :D

Wonderful top 10, really can't find much fault with any of it nor the rest of the chart! Crying for No Reason was really good, even if it didn't make my top 100, seemed like quite a different and definitely a lot more emotional style for her.
Worthy winner out of the top 10 for me, Crying For No Reason would be a stunning ballad ordinarily anyway but adding the electro element to it really just gives it that huge edge over a lot of songs this year. Glad it was a rightful smash.

Pretty flawless top 3 I must say, Uptown Funk is going to be a fantastic challenger for my 2015 chart, I have loved Crying For No Reason for ages, very poignant and vulnerable side to Katy B that was great to see, and well, Rather Be is obvious.

Very nice to see Circles so high up too, it's really been one of my favourite discoveries from BJSC this year, with so many feels attached to it. I should have commented before now but your commentary has been very interesting to read so wd on that. ^_^

What a SOLID top 5, amazing! Incredible choice for the top, it didn't actually hit me until release (oops), but 'Crying For no Reason' is extraordinary! Really interesting production accompanied by a very relatable tale. Some epic inclusions throughout, including Klaxons which I totally wasn't expecting as I didn't realise others on here appreciated their latest stuff so much, yay!
