Kendrick Lamar’s new album To Pimp A Butterfly has broken streaming records on Spotify. Tracks from the follow up to Good Kid, M.A.A.D City notched up 9.6m streams on the album’s first full day of release, more than any other LP has recorded in the streaming service’s seven year existence. This beats the previous record holder, Michael Buble’s Christmas, which garnered 9.5m streams on Christmas Eve 2014.

The news comes off the back of a surprise release for the record, which was expected to arrive a week later and may have been released by Interscope without Lamar’s full knowledge. At the time of its release, Anthony Tiffith, CEO of Top Dawg Entertainment, which represents Lamar, tweeted to say: “I WOULD LIKE 2 PERSONALLY THANK @Interscope FOR f***ING UP OUR RELEASE... SOMEBODY GOTS 2 PAY 4 THIS MISTAKE !!!!”

Despite the confusion, the record has been gaining rave early reviews. The Guardian said: “the full 80-minute epic itself is an ambitious and at times overwhelming reflection of its multi-faceted complexity.”

On Tuesday, Kanye West tweeted to say: “KENDRICK IS AN INSPIRATION. THANK YOU FOR THE VIBRATIONS AND THE SPIRIT. YOUR MEANING, MESSAGE AND EXECUTION ARE GIFTS TO THE WORLD.”

I am so glad this is doing well. I knew there was decent buzz around this release, but to be honest I'm quite shocked at how popular he is now!

HOUSE KEEPING! ¡ABRE LA PUERTA! ¡ABRE LA PUERTA TENGO QUE LIMPIAR EL QUATRO!

That 2nd half of 'u' though. Amazing.

Listening to this for the first time in lesson (ha too swag for school) and this is so far incredible! Thematically, sonically, vocally... so so impressed, especially after my best friend said he wasn't impressed.

'King Kunta' is an early favourite, love the interpolations. 'These Walls' also sounded very good! Second listen now, can see why it's already so critically acclaimed! :D

oh and couldn't remember the title of the other one that sounded brill the first time but it is 'u'! INSANE. The vocals and production and how they change up throughout *.* wowwww, stunning.

Gosh that streaming news. Continuing to shock me at the response to it (not that it's doing so well but i assumed his release would be met with a muted response here). Outshining Drake's latest one and proving once again that this release strategy can do absolute wonders.

So from what I gather from other sources this is what happened this week.

The record company were meant to change/reveal the title/tracks of the album on Monday, to help boost pre-orders and continue to generate Buzz. As it was untitled before. There was an error and whilst revealing it they put the entire thing up for sale. Because of this, the entire campaign was rushed forward?

Solid album and I found myself enjoying it way more than I expected. My favourites at the moment are u, Complexion (A Zulu Love), The Blacker the Berry and especially King Kunta.

They've obliterated i though! and Mortal Man drags/is boring.

Really pleased with how good this is though, I've never paid much attention to him :o

Have you heard 'good kid, m.A.A.d city' and/or the singles from it?

Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe and that's it :o

Ahh then you really have to start with those singles! 'Swimming Pools (Drank)' is incredible as is 'Backseat Freestyle' though a little more divisive. Also go back to 'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe' because that's probably his best for me.

The whole album is really, really strong and it's a tough/long listen (but well worth it) so you need to be committed before going for it

I'll listen to those three today and get round to the album eventually. :cheer:
Backseat Freestyle is divisive? Better than anything on TPAB imo. Swimming Pools is also very good and already in his top five for me :o

YAY!! I guess divisive isn't the best word, but it's very OUT THERE so i assume some will just be turned off because of that. 'Swimming Pools' is a lot safer and slicker and should have been a smash.

Glad you like though, the singles were phenomenal from that era and 'King Kunta' is doing a very good job of living up to them now

The 'Momma' lyrics  That second verse is just spectacular. After all that bravado, self-confidence... "not to ever forget until I realized I didn’t know shit, the day I came home". Chills.

Also 'The Blacker the Berry' i have always liked but it really is the central song of the album for me now. Not the best, but the most important for sure.

*Alongside 'Mortal Man' of course. Wonderful to hear the message of the album said so frankly at the end of a mammoth listen. 12 minutes but i HAVE to listen right to the last second every time.

(triple post, apologies !)

I agree King Kunta is fantastic, hoping it's the next single because it's one of the most instant songs.

Does For Free? grate on anyone else, for some reason it just makes me irritated.

'good kid, m.A.A.d city' is incredible throughout (well actually 'Compton' is a pretty weak ending but everything up to that is brill), and it's a concept album so really demands to be listened to in full, the singles are taken out of context. You must listen Josh ;o

(and I still must listen to 'To Pimp A Butterfly' oop)

Nothing on this album has topped Swimming Pools (Drank) or Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe.
'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe', 'Backseat Freestyle', 'Swimming Pools (Drank)' and 'The Recipe' are ESSENTIAL but 'King Kunta' and 'u' are already up there. <3
I suppose I need to wait and see how it holds up with age, but I'm actually thinking I might like TPAB more than GKMC. GKMC was already a big, ambitious step forward from Section.80, but I think TPAB is another step forward from that! Only real 'negative' is that there are less obvious standalone cuts (though The Blacker The Berry is definitely my favourite song of the year so far), but from start to finish just so, so, so good.
