Good to see Jess Glynne getting TOTD today. Hope it can be another solo Top 10 hit for at the very least. :)

Radios 1's defence for why they don't play living for love is fantastic.

They don't ban anyone and the best part is their example of an older act being on the playlist is Paul McCartney. He wouldn't be on there if it wasn't for Riri and Kanye

Exactly, what a cheap answer. Paul has had new albums and they haven't touched him.

I don't get why Radio 1 would have to "defend" not playlisting Madonna anyway. They're not Capital therefore they don't have to play every song that's gonna be a chart hit, plus it's well-known that R1 think their target audience don't want to hear old popstars (see also Robbie Williams/Take That)
What did they say?

Radio 1 does not ban anyone – please don’t believe the papers.

The tracks played on Radio 1 are chosen on musical merit and their relevance to our young audience on a case-by-case basis, and whilst around 40% of the country's 15 to 29-year-olds tune into Radio 1 each week, an artist's age is never a factor.

In fact, Paul McCartney currently has two tracks - 'FourFiveSeconds' and 'Only One' - on the Radio 1 playlist.

TOTD 17/02/15: Slaves - Feed The Mantaray

another rock band R1 like to support then, not a fan.

Paul doesn't really even sing on said tracks.

The artwork made it look better than it was re-TOTD

They are laughable sometimes, Paul McCartney is only being playlisted because of Rihanna and Kanye. Also he doesn't even sing on the songs. The only two acts that (that I can think of) have been playlisted when there over 40 in the last year is Pharrell Williams and Mary J Bilge so why use Paul McCartney as the example when you have two examples that I much more justifiable and at least they actually sing on the records that they have been playlisted on

that statement would've looked a lot better without the Paul McCartney sentence tbh, it's so obvious why he's currently on the playlist.

I'm glad R1 are continuing to support new artists instead of giving in to the papers / Madonna's fanbase anyway, she isn't relevant for their target audience (15 - 29 year olds), there shouldn't have to be any more reasoning beyond that.

I agree that it's good that they are supporting new artists and Madonna doesn't really need the exposure but i disagree completely that she is irrelevant for 15-29 year olds. She is one of the most talked about artists of any generation and i know for a fact that amongst my circle of friends she is still incredibly "relevant". It is impossible to judge the relevance of something across any singular age gap because we all have different things that we find relevant, let alone 15 years worth of people.

Having said that, 'Living For Love' would look and sound totally out of place on the playlist and i don't think they should feel the need to have to play it at all (but then if they're all about diversity it's more of a reason to play it :P).

Anyway it should be judged on a song-by-song basis, not a "Madonna is irrelevant to young people, therefore none of her songs will get played".

I actually don't think Living For Love would sound too out of place on the playlist. I think radio 1 listeners would enjoy the song, regardless of the artist. Also, it's produced by Diplo and MNEK and Alicia Keys were also involved, who are all easily within this radio 1 demographic.

A huge portion of Madonna's fanbase is appeals to 18 - 30+ year old gay men, and lots of those people probably listen to Radio 1.

Even Pharrell isn't too strong of an example either, I don't think. It's pretty hard to call someone who sells/streams 2 million with a song irrelevant and Pharrell's age isn't publicised anywhere near as much as Madonna's - if you were to tell most people that Pharrell was 41, they'd probably think you were having a laugh!

I'm not surprised Radio 1 have snubbed Madonna but I don't see how she's suddenly become 'irrelevant' to their target audience as most of the people who fit into the 15-30 age bracket would have listened to Radio 1 when '4 Minutes' was A-listed.
