Reception

fter the single was released, The Saturdays were forced to re-record the lyrics of Issues. Radio stations refused to play the song until it was changed. The song lyrics where changed and it was added in the radio playlist. The original lyrics were 'can't decide if I should slap you or kiss you'. The band were forced to change the lyrics due to the sounding similarities between 'slap you' and 'stab you' which they were worried might promote violence. The music video version features the lyrics "slap you or kiss you", while the radio were playing "leave you or kiss you". The single has the radio mix of the song.

"Issues" received mostly mixed reviews from pop music critics. James Masterton of Yahoo! Music described the song as a "drippy mid-Atlantic love ballad" that lacked the "spark, energy and sheer excitement" of the group's past singles. Stating that the single was not as fun as the band's previous two singles. In a review for Allmusic, Jon O'Brien called the track "dated" and wrote that it "sounds like a Max Martin reject from the '90s".

Vanessa White opens the song with the first verse, she sings the first bridge with backing vocals of Mollie King and the second with backing vocals of Frankie Sandford. White and Sandford take lead on the chorus as Una Healy and Rochelle Wiseman take lower harmony's and King takes higher harmony's. Wiseman takes the second verse as Healy takes the middle 8 with backing vocals of Wiseman and King. The final chorus has adlibs from White.

Aww I LOVE this one! I wonder if they'll have an acoustic version as a B-Side?

I think 'Work' would be a perfect last single off the album! :w00t:

Issues is the one that's currently getting the most downloads on iTunes that's an album track. So it's only doing the sensible thing, surely?

Noooooo! :( 'Work'? :(

'Issues' is a weak ballad with bad lyrics, if they wanted a ballad they should have gone with 'Fall' perhaps.

I didn't know that about Issues johnjo! What's nice about this album is that there's not that ONE song which HAS to be released or the album won't sell - I would have picked Chasing Lights last week of December, but I still think this will work. I hope it gets a better produced single mix, maybe a bit slower, as the bridges when they are singing over one another can get a bit messy. But it's a wonderful song. I hope they release 'Work' in about March/April - then they will have made fantastic single choices..

Oh dear at the suggestion they should release 'Fall'! An album track if ever I heard one! :heehee: It should be 'Why Me Why Now' though. That's the best song on the album and it'd be extremely suitable for a New Year release.

I woudnt partically like Fall or Why Me Why Now to be singles really, there is much better on the album. Keep Her is another one i woudnt mind to be a single.

i think they ought to create a new song after a third release for the album. by next march a fourth release will be 'old hat' and wont sell well. their best chance of survival is to get some good quality tunes out early in the new year...

interesting choice of single, I do love Issues but I can't help but feel that Work, Keep Her or Set Me Off could have had more hit potential

I see this one failing to make the top ten

oh, and I also prefer Fall at the moment :o

Changing it to 'dump' is stupid.

They should just say smack?

Amazing cover!

Absolutely amazing cover - I really hope the Saturdays continue to be one of those bands we always fear won't do well and then blow us away with their success - Issues is off to a good start for sure! I really think they need to release both a remix to radio and also an acoustic version like the live performances to iTunes, especially as the success seems to have started so early, we don't want it to peak too soon. I'm sure they have something up their sleeves.

Whoever at Fascination employed that cover designer needs to pay them double time and get them on the GA team too..

Brilliant. Their artwork has been incredible this era. To THINK the same team do it as do GA's! :heehee:

For anyone who doesnt know there is a request for a Saturdays forum happening at the moment, so please go and vote for one.

and ten years behind the rest of the world digitalspy and the rest of the mass media pick up on the stab/slap/leave issue

The Saturdays have been forced to re-record their new single 'Issues' after complaints about its lyrics.

Radio stations were threatening to snub the single after believing that the lyrics could encourage knife crime.

A line on the track was originally recorded as: "Can't decide if I should slap you or kiss you."

However confusion mounted after some people thought the "slap" was in fact a "stab", prompting threats to boycott the single.

A new version of the song has been recorded with the word "leave" replacing "slap".

"It was innocent enough and wasn’t meant to be controversial. But to avoid any controversy in the current climate the girls decided to change the lyric," a source told The Sun.

The single is released on January 5.

Hello old news!

:w00t: :w00t: This is so going to go Top 3! Just pre-ordered 2 copies from HMV :w00t:

I'm shocked. :o

I still don't like this song, but I really want them to do well so let's hope this does do as well as it's looking set to. :o

#34 already is a fantastic achievement considering there's still weeks to go and it's in the christmas rush.

They couldn't have chosen better for third single. A big hit for them that attracted people into purchasing their debut album. Fond memories with this one.
Least Favourite

Not Mollie saving this poor piss ass performance.

EDIT : Okay and Rochelle.

Edited by Hurricane

I liked it at the time but I'd never listen to it now.

A very successful single for them though.

how dare una steal vanessa's opening lines.

Una is bad. Real bad.

Hype around a song where the lyrics were misheard and caused a controversy...

Me too! I still absolutely adore this. It's a song Atomic Kitten could have recorded for their comeback single and it'd have smashed. Radio lapped it up.
