Halloween - BJSC edition

We are reborn for the tail end of the month as JADAKILLNIA to bring you a bit of Halloween spookiness in Terra Avium. We are thrilled to present you with our explosive witch house discovery 'Blood Blood Blood' by Unison! We get to try out a new sub genre AND nationality, as the band are French! Expanding our diversity one step at a time. We were personally blown away upon first listen, from the initial harrowing build up of infant voices to the EXPLOSION of goodness that swiftly follows. We hope you enjoy this venture into a scary vortex as we very much look forward to hearing what all you other nations have brought to the table!

Wishing I gave 'Blood Blood Blood' a few more listens before voting, due to unfortunate timings I'd only heard your song once when I sent my votes whereas I'd heard everything else at least 2/3 times! Oops. At least it still got a point from me but definitely wishing I gave it more now, having listened a few more times ;o

Glad you didn't really need my support anyway, kind of surprised this did so well (as I know you are as well x), hooray for Jadakissnia rediscovering the formula to spinoff success after the misstep with The Pipettes :jump: x

Oh no! Well on one hand that's a bit of a shame but on the other I'm glad to hear it growing further in your affections! 1 point was still much appreciated as a point is a point! Helping me to get that iconic 169 points tally and all x

I must have played it about 20 times after finding it at first, I really love it so it was a shame to see the lukewarm Dubtrack reception initially. But yes this outdid the expectations of everyone I think, really happy to see it having other fans including yourself after thinking this would bomb! Seven can safely hang on to his wig after a bit of a floppy prediction of 38th. Yaaaay thank you <3 x

BJSC 80 entry announced

After much deliberation, this month we have settled on 'Unzip Your Skin' by Stranger Cat as our entry for BJSC 80. The project consists of American Cat Martino and Sven Britt, marking our second entry from the U.S. following Muhsinah. The origin of the group's name is pretty cool: "Often a cat would come to the sliding glass door to listen, meowing to be let in. When it appeared daily they called it Stranger Cat, and observed its alien supernatural powers, as she’d heard tell of the Foothills’ long history of UFO sightings and ghost haunts. One day they let Stranger Cat in. The plump feline ate all the kitty food and left." Iconic. Almost as iconic as the song itself~ It's very us, dripping in gorgeous synthy goodness and accompanied by rather brilliant vocals too. We hope those drawn into semi 1 enjoy our song and that we can possibly get a 6th qualifier out of it!

Surprise spinoff smash for Unison!

Unison1.jpg

We recently learned of our fate in the BJSC Halloween spinoff in Terra Avium, where for only one month we were rebranded Jadakillnia. However, to our surprise it was a positive fate! After a lukewarm initial response, a prediction of 38th was conjured up. However, to everyone's surprise we actually finished in 7th place with an iconic 169 points total! French witch house duo Unison provided our entry with 'Blood Blood Blood', and we are thrilled to see it surpassing our expectations and then some! This now marks our third top 10 spinoff finish out of a possible four, following two Belgian winners in Lasgo and SOLDOUT. Another huge surprise was receiving an 18 from FARC/DARC after never receiving points of any capacity from the nation previously! We are completely chuffed with the result in such a strong spinoff.

Our 18 was awarded to the magnificent 'Tubular Bells' by Mike Oldfield, sent by D'yermacabre. The BJSC masses had great taste on this occasion as Mike Oldfield was actually crowned the winner of the spinoff! This was generally a triumph for our favourites; 15 points were awarded to Hushkaspookia (James Newton Howard/Jennifer Lawrence - 'The Hanging Tree') in 3rd place and 13 points to Danaelantern (Brainbug - 'Nightmare (Sinister Strings Radio Edit)' which finished in 10th. Other favourites from the likes of Percemetery and DARC also smashed their way to the upper tier, so we're thrilled on the whole!

This was a genius idea for a spinoff, and we hope to see it back next year.

Thank you to the following countries for the points: Ouijanouija, Taaaarggh!no, Pusfland, Percemetery, Hushkaspookia, Mulgravecia, Deandracula, St. Disturbia, Daemon, Satana, Frandootstein, Ethanowla, N PHNTM, Cadevilicia, Ultraviolenceland, DARC, Fljotatrick-or-treat + Vülkeeria.

BJSC 80 RESULTS

'UNZIP YOUR SKIN' A STRANGER TO THE FINAL

http://i.imgur.com/u3tDZR5.jpg

It is official, we have ended the year with five qualifications. Unfortunately, it was announced last night in Aeroche that we had failed to make it to a BJSC final for a second time (following Muhsinah in BJSC 77), coming 24th in semi 1 with 42 points. Frustratingly however we were only a few points off qualifying! Our entry 'Unzip Your Skin' by Stranger Cat has broken our two-song qualification streak, though gives us a second eligible entrant for next months 'Rejects' contest; it will probably have a much better shot than 'Luv w Luv' of actually doing something though due to finishing quite a bit higher than that. We'd like to thank anyone who pointed us!

I guess we could've let the DNQ slide as we had a feeling in the waters on the night, but it turned out to be a bit of a shambles on the whole. Unfortunately we lost our 12 pointer for a fifth time (out of a possible seven!) so please don't send something that'll appeal to us in a big way for it is usually a curse. This 12 pointer in question was Pupok's best entry to date: 'Slow Dancing' by Schulkid ft. Valair. We assumed it would be a safe qualifier, especially being tipped with top 10 predictions! A huge shame to see it crash out at 26th. However, things didn't end there as of course we only went and lost our 10 pointer as well. Skall sent the very infectious 'Farewell G41' by Stephen Lopkin and it finished in 22nd - just one point off qualifying! I suppose it's a pretty good result as we presumed it would be even lower. We lose a couple of dance standouts in a very dance-heavy contest, but also a bit of swag brought by no strangers to our points Persephonia. They received the coveted 1 point with Yung Lean's 'Kyoto', finishing in 27th place. We groan at all you BJSC voters but remain happy at the silver lining of our semi two favourites making it through.

So I guess we'll see you at Rejects/The Best Of! We currently have something pretty special lined up for January - an almost 7 minute long spooky dance/classical fused banger that we cannot WAIT to unleash on you all (why does there have to be a break :'() See you all soon~

This was more of a tragedy than my own DNQ (as I knew that was coming whereas I thought this would have been safe) :snif: Here's hoping for quick justice in the Rejects x

Aww :( you being one of the good'uns as per though, thank you very much for the 8 points <3 Jadaphonia's ghosts to haunt the final tbh.

Here's hoping! x

Will it be based on just the main contest or will it include spin-offs?

Main contest! I found that tough enough, a whole other challenge to factor in spinoffs as well haha! A great 100 in the end.

~BJSC EOY - TOP 100~

100

Ronnie Flex ft. Mr. Polska - 'Zusje'

Jukanië | BJSC 78

First up on the list was recent DNQ 'Zusje'. This is already a prime example of Jadakissnia supporting charity cases as I gave this entry 6 out of its 7 points in the semi, where it finished dead last! Oops. Anyway, I cannot say it was the lyrics that pulled me into this as it's all in Dutch. 'Zusje' apparently means 'attractive young girl' and that would make PERFECT sense coupled with the video. The vid itself is rather cliché with the whole guy sees hot girl and plucks up the courage to talk to her at the dance eventually... save for double clichéness that it was all a daydream. Somehow though the video manages to be charming, and I liked the fact that both Ronnie Flex and Mr. Polska were in it. As for the song itself there is just something about it, I guess it's the rather cool uplifting production that switches up a bit that draws me to it. Like the video there's something charming about it. I imagine this will be its only EOY appearance unless there were secret fans in the other semi, but it did manage to get one reasonably big fan in me and snuck right in.

99

One More Time - 'Highland'

FSR Rontvia | BJSC 80

Next up we have the first song to make an appearance from the most recent contest. This is the second time an FSR Rontvia entry has hit me in a really big way (the other to come later on), though unlike that grower in question, this was extremely instant! This glorious track is so ABBA-esque, of course with the whole Swedish pop group thing but also the production itself. The whole thing is so grandeur, in fact I believe Cody said he could 'imagine it as a song in a Viking movie that would accompany them marching' and I totally get that analogy, as it has that whole triumphant feel to it. After chucking 7 points its way I was delighted to see this give FSR Rontvia another top 10 yesterday, a mighty singalong chorus that won't be leaving my head anytime soon.

98

IAMX - 'Happiness'

Botanikka | BJSC 79

'Happiness' is a rather dark synthpop track, perhaps not the most instant due to the 'screaming' parts, though I soon learned to appreciate these as part of the whole haunting package. The visuals are also extremely captivating, with even some disturbing imagery in places that works effectively to create a powerful message. These lyrics were some of the most gripping and thought provoking of the contest for me. 'Happiness' allowed me to point Botanikka in the contest for the first time, as we awarded this entry 5 points in the final. Overall a really impactful song when you're in the right mood to listen to it.

97

I See Stars ft. Cassadee Pope - 'The Hardest Mistakes'

Séyetana | BJSC 79

I did not expect something featuring a country star who originated from The Voice to be so good. Not dissing country in particular, but I just never would have imagined this sound at all from that description! I am aware this is a re-working of 'Electric Forest' but I have actually not heard that before. However, this is absolutely gorgeous! Cassadee's voice is so mesmerising on this, and the production is super cool too. The lyrics also really stand out, I particularly like "this life is just a perfect fit" and how she delivers the final word in a soaring fashion. We awarded this 6 points in the final, though on replaying it just now I imagine it could've been even more with repeated listens!

96

Club Cheval - 'Discipline'

Espen | BJSC 79

The first of quite a few entries from one of our favourite countries of the year now. At first for some reason this completely passed me by in the semis and even on my first listen of the final! However I soon realised the error of my ways and this quickly grew and grew. One thing I'm really liking from Espen is that they continually bring it with the production side of things, with this being no exception. The instrumental of this is so quirky and infectious and the lyrics are enjoyable as well - the whole thing feeling like a carefree 'put your hands in the air' moment. The video encapsulates this feeling quite well with all the partying going on, chucking in a couple of lesbian and gay kissing scenes 'cause why not. This grabbed 7 of my points in the end.

95

Asta ft. Allday - 'Dynamite'

D'yermak'er | BJSC 74

I was shocked to realise that I did not point this at all! I do apologise as this final remains the strongest one I've been in so far and I didn't realise its brilliance at the time. Yes, this only really hit me a couple of months after the contest ended. It got played a couple of times on plug.dj now with a simplistic but colourful video to accompany it, and it suddenly clicked. This is just so much fun from start to finish, Asta has such a fantastic voice and brings so much energy to it. Admittedly I found Allday's contributions to it quite jarring at first but I've grown to kind of appreciate his slightly odd enunciation, particularly of 'Snoopy'. One of the biggest growers for me since I joined!

94

Best Coast - 'Heaven Sent'

Isconia | BJSC 75

I remember listening to this for the first time and instantly thinking that it sounded a bit like Samantha Ronson's 'Built This Way' from the Mean Girls soundtrack. Already a huge compliment, as that was one of my favourites from said soundtrack. Anyway, Isconia received points from me for the first time (please come back!) with this rocky love song. I do love a good guitar and the lyrics are really quite adorable. The video is sweet in its simplistic ways with romantic touches too. While this was overshadowed in the female rock stakes that contest by Meg Myers, it is still memorable enough to be amongst my favourites. I am a fool for only awarding this 2 points but it was again a case of a very strong final on the whole.

93

Etienne De Crécy and Madeline Follin - 'You'

Espen | BJSC 75

Espen are back again in this section! My goodness how much it looks like I didn't appreciate it with just 3 points given. When something this amazing is this low down it really speaks volumes of the quality across the board of BJSC. 'You' is massive, there's quite an old school vibe to it while remaining so fresh at the same time. The entirety of this entry is so arresting: with the production being instantly infectious, Madeline's vocals being so intriguing and the video being superb (not because of the lewd bit at the end what do you take me for). Excellent.

92

Daniella Mason - 'Shade Of You'

Hushkanukia | BJSC 75

Some more Perseventyfive goodness now for y'all. It did not take long at all for Hushkanukia to receive points from us when they offered something this lush. 'Shade Of You' is such a stunning soft synth-pop song, the chorus in particular making such an impact. "I'll dive in 'cause that's just what I do" is a lyric that particularly struck me, so I was curious to know the meaning behind the song. Apparently Daniella says that it's about an inner conflict, though nothing specific and that she wanted to make the video quite abstract so that everyone could feel a part of the story with their own interpretation. Interesting! Perhaps I feel strongly towards it due to being just generally quite emotional and jumping into things head first, but who knows. This earned four of our points, though this isn't the last time Hushkanukia received points from us...

91

Vök - 'Waterfall'

Espen | BJSC 77

Can you tell we love a bit of Espen yet? A hat trick of entries from them today and yet this isn't even the last one to come. This one probably isn't as stand-out as 'You' or 'Discipline' but I have a bit of a soft spot for it. Once again it's another slickly produced entry from them, but in particular I love how the subtlety of the verses evolve into such a beautiful and explosive chorus. The video is a bit reminiscent of the 'Happiness' one earlier on as well: black and white visuals that are also a bit saddening to watch. We awarded Espen 7 points for this back in the summer.

"Discipline" is a GODSEND. I almost considered it but then went with another Canadian because I'm like that. Probably should've went that route.

Also Cassadee didn't originate from The Voice - she originated from Hey Monday.

Very charitable of you to put 'Zusje' in your top 100 x Nice choices so far though 'You'/'Discipline'/'The Hardest Mistakes' should be much higher!!1

Looking forward to following this, who doesn't love reading 100 BJSC essays ~

Oh righty! I cannot say I've heard of Hey Monday, I just recalled someone saying she was from The Voice before.

Thank you for pointing that out though, you learn something new every day x
