March 24, 201510 yr Yup and only 2 days of physical sales, as the physical doesn't usually come out to Weds The physical format will probably drop early to accommodate the change. I can see Simon probably making a few changes to the X Factor Final this year, most likely having the results show back to Saturdays.
March 24, 201510 yr This could actually be a good thing for me, as I have often more time on Fridays :cheer: so I may actually be listening to it :D
March 24, 201510 yr Why would you start a chart at 4pm Friday when kids are still getting home from school? It kills off most of the audience! Then to have the cheek of putting it on CBBC and thinking that will raise the profile of chart music!! Yes everyone over 15 is going to suddenly tune into the CBBC channel! It will appeal to the young girls who like One Direction and the other boybands and the like, that's all. The other thing that's not being discussed so far here is what will fill the slot currently occupied by the top 40 on a Sunday and compete against the Big Top 40 show, which will be faster and more comprehensive than the top 40 broadcast by Radio One. I really think this is VERY bad move for the BBC and will make the charts less important in the British public's eye. As some of the people on this thread have stated they can't listen to the show or catch only a part of it. We have gone backwards to the days of the top 20 and breakers. It's 2015 BBC!!! Not 1950!!!! Don't be daft.. 4pm is perfect if they want kids to listen in. Why do you think BBC One always used to have kids programmes on then (before CBBC Channel). Sounds like 4x many people listen on a weekday afternoon than a weekend according to RAJAR, so it means more people will hear the chart than before. I haven't got a problem with them just playing the top 20, so long as they still play any new entries from 21-40. I get sick of hearing the same ridiculously old songs every week. I suspect though that the show will be slightly less fast paced as the current show and the top 20 will take up most of the 2 hours, rather than squeezed in the last 80 minutes like now. They might want to keep some of Greg's other daily features in there to keep the show similar in format to the rest of the week. They don't want to alienate people who just like his regular show who might be bored of 2 hours of non-stop music, especially in the "drivetime" slot. Do they still do more regular news and travel updates during the day as well? Don't really listen to R1 much these days! I reckon this week for example, we'd only have had the new entries from Pitbull, Kygo, MNEK, and then the top 20. There's a chance they may even skip a song or two in the top 20 I guess, if 21-40 is especially busy.
March 24, 201510 yr The physical format will probably drop early to accommodate the change. I can see Simon probably making a few changes to the X Factor Final this year, most likely having the results show back to Saturdays. It depends how much the timing of the winner's single actually has anything to do with how they schedule TXF. Going by how it is usually scheduled, it would have been planned for 12th/13th Dec. I don't think they'll push it back a week just because the chart date has changed. It probably more to do with how ITV want to schedule it.
March 24, 201510 yr Chart countdown show back on BBC TV Source: MW The UK music industry has finally been awarded the weekly chart show-themed TV broadcast it's long been waiting for, thanks to CBBC and Radio 1. Broadcast live from Radio 1's Live Lounge on Sunday evenings from 6pm, the CBBC Official Chart Show will run 26 30-minute episodes from May 10 in line with Radio 1's Official Chart Show. It is understood that the CBBC programme will have an initial run through early summer and then continue in autumn. Later in the year it's likely to switch to Friday, in line with The Official Chart on Radio 1, which will be moved to Fridays from July, in line with the new global release day. Described as "an energetic mix of pop, gossip, user generated content interactive features and fast-moving entertainment", the show will count down the UK's favourite downloads and songs in video form, in line with Radio 1's broadcast. According to Wikipedia, "CBBC is a BBC Television channel aimed at 7 to 12 year olds." Who is this show going to be aimed at? There are two songs from the 50 Shades of Grey soundtrack in the top ten at the moment; the Earned It video definitely couldn't air on a kids channel at 6pm.
March 24, 201510 yr I suspect Clara always knew her appointment could end up being a short-term one. The first stories about a global release date appeared long before she was appointed, so the possibility of the chart date moving was known when she got the job.
March 24, 201510 yr They'll obvs have to be a bit careful about some of the videos they show, but I don't reckon the show will be too childish. The one they did in the early 2000s was really good. They're also going to put the show on the Radio 1 channel on iPlayer. It's going to be watchable basically.
March 24, 201510 yr I'm a bit more concerned that by trimming it down to 2 hours it'll give them an excuse to not play some of the newer/fresher stuff in the chart that they've banished from their playlist and keep playing the overplayed/stale stuff (ala All Of Me/Stay With Me) as they believe that's what their captive audience will want to hear. That could just be the cynic in me though, but it wouldn't surprise me.
March 24, 201510 yr I wonder what The X Factor and The Voice will do now, since they'll basically be releasing midweek
March 24, 201510 yr I'm pleased to see Greg is finally taking up this mantle - even before Jameela came along and (I feel) did the show justice I said he'd be perfect to host the chart, even though I only really listen to an official chart rundown when an artist I like is charting. Gotta say though, the BBC are shooting themselves in the foot a trifle - firstly putting it on in a timeslot where most people won't even be out of work, school, college, uni etc and will be home just in time to hear it end or begin with Dance Anthems. And, reciprocating with the comments above, the 'not every song played' element just smacks a little of when JK and Joel (bleugh) were bought in in 2005, and talked over the top of Rammstein in a supposedly 'hilarious' German accent for 30 seconds, (they were a new entry in the top 40 the week they started) and then skipped onto something overplayed and on the playlist. Now I'm not saying Greg would do the same thing - he's one of the few Radio 1 DJs who doesn't make me wish I had loss of hearing - but the idea of the big 'chiefs' trying to bast*rdise and commodify 'what the audience wants' is just well. We all remember what happened when Top of the Pops was revived to that final incarnation with Tim Kash - i.e. more of the irrelevant 'content' and 'banter' instead of, you know, the actual top 40. Moving it onto the CBBC channel as well is a bad move. Even BBC One or the red button would be the more ideal place for it, instead of on a channel which reinforces the idea that pop music is for kids only, and again, with a presenter who doesn't make me wish I was blind and deaf (I've had the displeasure of sitting through Friday Download once when Olly was on promoting 'Oh My Goodness', it was such patronising rubbish).
March 24, 201510 yr Listening to the chart on Sundays is a tradition for me, and it's going to be sad with the chart moving to a Friday especially as it's unlikely I'll be able to listen very often any more... Also not happy about the chart being condensed as I hate it when they skip songs even when they're old and have been in the chart for ages. On the other hand, Greg James is great! Sorry to see Clara go already, but at least she's not leaving Radio 1. :)
March 24, 201510 yr Heard about the date change on the news. I haven't checked out the chart for a couple of months now. The last one I checked out, I believe had only 1 new entry in the top 40. The thing is, 3 hours felt too long to me. An abridged top 40 appeals more to me. Even 2 hours is pushing it, lol I remember listening to the new chart on a Tuesday lunchtime. They played the top 5 plus others during a 75 minute show, now that sort of length would appeal to me, but I've kind of drifted off from it now. I think much more interesting music is played on R3 Late Junction and on World On 3.
March 24, 201510 yr Author I'm a bit more concerned that by trimming it down to 2 hours it'll give them an excuse to not play some of the newer/fresher stuff in the chart that they've banished from their playlist and keep playing the overplayed/stale stuff (ala All Of Me/Stay With Me) as they believe that's what their captive audience will want to hear. That could just be the cynic in me though, but it wouldn't surprise me. This is exactly what I expect them to do, sadly. I don't see why they can't use Greg's entire slot from 4 - 7, to get the entire chart in? Edited March 24, 201510 yr by Joe.
March 24, 201510 yr I say this is a good move for Greg James to do the chart show now it makes sense why they let him sit in for Clara when she was ill to see if he could do it and he did it well. I am so happy for him. Does anyone know what they will do with the old slot?
March 24, 201510 yr Is there that much in the top 40 that they wouldn't want to play? From some quick searching it looks like the only songs in the current top 40 they haven't playlisted are When The Beat Drops Out, I Don't Mind, Ayo, Believe and Time Of Our Lives, none of which seem anti-Radio 1 to me.
March 24, 201510 yr I wonder what's happening with the midweek updates then - do we still get the update show on Radio 1? I reckon we still get this but a day early, not really a hassle to shift, when its part of Scott Mills show in the afternoon.
March 24, 201510 yr Author There's going to be such a big difference between the sales rate on Monday midweeks and the Friday sales. Because it usually goes; Big Frontloaded/pre-order sales Sunday/Monday -> slight dip in sales Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday -> higher sales for weekend Friday/Saturday. Now the weekend and release affect will go into effect at the same time, so there'll be BIG sales counted in the Monday midweeks and probably not much of a sales boost / difference by the actual chart. (If that makes any sense?)
March 24, 201510 yr It's probably a good thing I no longer listen regularly because I cannot commit to Fridays. I actually have other things to do. Just because we have a global release date, it does not mean the show or the chart dates needed to be changed. It's been done to appease record companies who want their new releases to have a full week of sales in the first week. Fair enough, but I really think the charts would be more interesting if these tracks had just the 2 days in the first week and then climbed in the second. But that's just me. Shortening the chart is no good either. Loads of top 40 tracks from 2005 never got airplay on the chart because they missed the top 20. I'd hope the new entries would all get played. They really aren't trying to hide the fact that they want 15 year olds listening and no one else by giving it that time slot. I can't imagine anyone older wanting to commit to it and besides which a lot of these kids will be out with their mates on Zara Friday night whereas they may just be hanging around the house on a Sunday doing nothing. I think it's a mistake but then what do I know? Some people on here will be satisfied with anything and since I don't listen now, I don't really gave a right to complain.
March 24, 201510 yr If they're gonna move it to Friday's, at least broadcast it during Scott's show from 1-4
