Backstage Access Episode 7.5: Next Month's Teaser

 

After weeks of predictions at the bottom three (including us predicting ourselves at the bottom two), MIIA ended up defying all expectations and placed 33rd (pending deductions). Sure it's the worst we've ever done but considering we were only aiming for that magic eight (which we SCRAPED), we'll take this as a win.

 

If there was one main country we'd like to thank, I'd never though I'd say this, but THANK YOU USFLAND. We had been aiming for your points and when it seemed like we gave up on you guys, you rescued us from a DNQ. We are in your debt. Just send a strong qualifier.

 

Next month's plans have been 90% solidified, and the main choice is a Years & Years styled track. Will this be a return to form (sorta)?

Finally kicking off this countdown! We have whopping four songs from BJSC 80, including the first from our good bros from Flynnonda. We'll get to that later. First off is Son Lux, who missed out on my votes back in 79. A small snippet of it playing in Quantico was enough to land it in this countdown. Don't say I never support Tartford.

 

We got Lim Kim, Owsey, Chelsea Lankes & SPELLES telling BJSC 80, the latter being the highest of the four. Lim Kim I knew from being one of Yu's potentials, the next two appear together, the former growing on me ever so slightly, and SPELLES just screamed Dance Moms lyrical routine so that sold me almost immediately.

 

Hip-hop has done fairly well in BJSC this year and two of its essentials appear on this countdown: Seyetana's tribute to good kid, m.A.A.d city era Kendrick with "JAY Z" appears at #146, while Empire gets a slot at #143.

 

Persephonia has been on and off this year with me (I think the only song I didn't get was "Ocean", the others not in this countdown were okay), and two of their songs appear in this batch: Audialist's "Burning" was an interesting CSI-styled ambient track and ended up getting points from me, while San Holo's "Hiding" is the only one of Brayden's tracks in this countdown that was in a contest I wasn't part of, which is tragic because it probably would have scored high for me.

 

Daehun recently got my 18 with "Hurt Locker", but they gained my love just a bit earlier than that: AOA's "Heart Attack" was the biggest casualty for the Lupine voters in Semi 1, and it lands at #147. How the hell did it take Daehun THREE MONTHS to qualify with K-Pop again? This isn't their highest K-pop entry.

Another Harry track, another Michael track, and the first from Jade and Spadam! A lot of underrated tracks appear in this batch, though let's put a spotlight on one that earned a lot of it during its contest: "Time". A first top 10 for Jadakissnia, and something very chill and brooding. This solidified Jadakissnia's status as a country to beat.

BJSC 75 is the main contest on focus this batch, with three entries: also joining ONUKA are Terra Avium's future bass/glitch hop beauty "Ferrari", and Flynnonda's most underrated DNQ of 2015 (I'd say ever but Panama Wedding happened), MORRT's "Dive Right In". Also focused a lot are 76, 77 and 80. Beaverdonia managed to get a Latin hit into the BJSC final for the year with Sofia Reyes (the video of which costars Kendall Schmidt), and Oliver Nelson's "Found Your Love", Danaelanda's lowest ranking in the top 150. Both chill songs for margaritas on the beach. Nice. For 77 we have CanCon one hit wonder Jocelyn Alice with "Jackpot" representing Harmonica, and another unfair DNQ, Funkin Matt's "Rapture" - one of two times that I got a Usfland entry. We also have LarsM's "Shivers" and SVË's "BLKNBL" from BJSC 80, the latter being Avalonia's best entry.

Then we have Kero Kero Bonito. Clearly one of the best Trifoski entries, and one that didn't deserve a meager low top 20 placing. In fact, I thought this was gonna go top 10. The work of the agenda indeed.

Some high-pointed BJSC 74 tracks fall out here, most notably "Stay" which I ended up forgetting until TBO, oops. It also isn't the end of Seyetana, but there's still another song for the rock-infused (among other genres) country. It was my favorite Seyetana entry for a while but then another song higher in this countdown happened (and Nao Hiiragi but that's another story).

The latest Paul Kalkbrenner track also falls within that same mainframe, though I have listened to it a bit more over the past few months, as I have with Noémi, a beautiful trance track that sends me back to the days when I was just starting DDR.

"Shade Of You" was a song that I gave commiserations for due to the chorus sounding somewhat like Britney Spears' "Perfume", while Teen Wolf shipping anthem "Wolf" did get points from me, though not a whole lot. They're not the only Hushkanukia entries in this countdown. I also have to give a hand to "Pretty Green" - though I wasn't in this contest, it sure made gaming experiences a hell of a lot more lively. We also see some unjust DNQ's in the form of Sarai and Red Velvet. So glad Daehun got back on their feet so I could give them that rightfully deserved 18.

Aaaaand we have another Harry track. You know the feeling when you eat something so delicious that everything seems to move in slow motion (and people around you seem to talk in a really deep and sultry voice) and the flavor just seeps right into your mouth? That's what "Cause I'm A Man" feels like. I don't think we have to worry about Flynnonda dropping out of this countdown yet - there's one more song by them that really defined their BJSC career this year.

Drum N Bass. Not that common of a dance subgenre, but the various tracks that do come into this contest have gone well. And they sure make nice running anthems. Let's take "Egeya" for example - a bit of a dirty drumstep background production combined with a Baroque-sounding voice is a bit of an oddball combination, but it works out so well. We also have the as dirty "Pull Me Under" at #111 and the cleaner Chase & Status carbon copy "Get This Right" at #119.

It's a bit of an indication of how strong the contest is that certain songs that I didn't point in their respective contests appear here. Halsey I ended up getting into after BADLANDS was released, so that sorta counts, and "Egeya" got a commiseration. The big surprise I'm talking about is "Resonate", which ended up growing on me after a gaming sesh. There will come a day when I will finally award Quintessa points. Hoping it's this month.

Halsey isn't the only BJSC 75 song to appear: Adam Rickfors (a Daehun reject) also appears at #116. BJSC 77 makes multiple appearances as well with FLETCHER's "War Paint" at #118, the movie short theme song "Lava" at #117, and Lemaitre's take on the production to Conor Maynard's "Royalty" at #113.

Oh yeah, to wrap up we've saved the ikonek Greek children's song "Η Καμήλα" for last. I wanna say "best Beaverdonia entry EVER", but we have a song that has translated into a European hit coming up.

It was eventually time for another genre change and shift of focus as Oxford-based Pixel Fix delivers an indie pop flavor to this month's contest in Danaelanda. Of course, a bunch of countries opted for a dance sound, while ours is a bit in between the seasons. Hopefully it sticks out enough to usher in a return to form for our country.

 

A little bit more info:

 

Oxford-based indie pop trio Pixel Fix has returned to the music scene with brand new single “You Settle Me” and it’s another great and brilliant piece of atmospheric electronic music.

This new song arrives after the promotion of the band’s latest single “I Want You the Same”, released back in October and it’s confirmed as another taste of their upcoming full length album due out sometime this year via Sony Music.
