September 9, 20159 yr Well done Iceland and Austria - Austria could be a dark horse next summer IMO. Gwan Ireland too - hope we can get that playoff place or even beat Poland!! Does anyone know the Craic with the best third place on Wikipedia it says the best ranked third place team qualifies and alluded that meant Croatia at present which means the third place with most points AND highest rank goes through which sounds ridiculous?
September 9, 20159 yr Well done Iceland and Austria - Austria could be a dark horse next summer IMO. Gwan Ireland too - hope we can get that playoff place or even beat Poland!! Does anyone know the Craic with the best third place on Wikipedia it says the best ranked third place team qualifies and alluded that meant Croatia at present which means the third place with most points AND highest rank goes through which sounds ridiculous? The best place third team is worked out as follows. The group with 5 teams nothing changes. The groups with 6 teams, the games against the team finishing 6th are discounted. (Basically deduct 6 points from all the third place teams) and whoever has the most points goes through automatically. If there is a tie for points, I think the team who has the highest coifesiant (sp?) will go through.
September 9, 20159 yr God knows how it will work out. So do the best third places team not qualify without a playoff?
September 9, 20159 yr There is a league table for all the teams that finish in 3rd place in their qualifying groups and the team that is top of this table will go straight into Euro 2016 and all the other teams will be in play off matches. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2016_qualifying
September 10, 20159 yr Yeh and it says Croatia are top of that because they are he 'highest ranked' third place team?
September 10, 20159 yr Yeh and it says Croatia are top of that because they are he 'highest ranked' third place team? It actually says Ukraine will go through now. And they are the "highest ranked" 3rd place team based on points won against the teams finishing 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th. In groups A-H the matches played against the teams finishing 6th are discounted ass Group I only has 5 teams.
September 11, 20159 yr That makes more sense, Ireland have a decent amount of points but didn't beat the Scots and drew at home to the poles and away to Germany so prob won't make it!
October 8, 20159 yr Northern Ireland have qualified for Euro 2016! Edit: So have Portugal Edited October 8, 20159 yr by Hazza Chapman
October 9, 20159 yr Great for Northern Ireland but how lucky are they that Greece have crashed and burned so spectacularly? At least it'll finally stop Greece being seeded first in future qualifiers - I've always thought they're a very weak top seed, they just keep on achieving that seeding by winning weak groups...no more now!
October 9, 20159 yr Author Fantastic to see Northern Ireland qualify for Euro 2016. They truly deserve it. Albania could make it on Sunday if they beat Armenia in their final game.
October 9, 20159 yr Defending champions Spain and also Switzerland have booked their place at Euro 2016 tonight.
October 10, 20159 yr Wales have qualified for Euro 2016! I am glad that they've made it to a major international tournament at last after decades of disappointment. Holland are in grave danger of missing out on Euro 2016. They have to win their final group match against Czech Republic and hope that Turkey don't win against Iceland. Edited October 10, 20159 yr by Hazza Chapman
October 10, 20159 yr So Scotland (if we don't include ROI) are the only Home Nation not to qualify :(
October 11, 20159 yr Author Italy also qualified last night. Fantastic to see Wales qualify for a major tournament. The most happy you'll probably ever see even though they lost the game against Bosnia.
October 11, 20159 yr So, going into the last game, we have: Group A Czech Republic and Iceland qualified. Turkey will be through to the playoffs if they win against Iceland or Netherlands don't win. The Netherlands need a win against Czech Republic and have to hope Iceland come to their aid. Group B Belgium and Wales through, dogfight between Bosnia, Cyprus and Israel for the playoff place. As the former two play each other, whoever wins that will probably get it as Israel play Belgium. Group C Spain qualified. Slovakia and Ukraine fighting it out for who goes through in second. As Ukraine play Spain while Slovakia play Luxembourg, the Ukrainians probably have a harder task. Group D None of Germany, Poland or Ireland are definitely through in the top 2 yet. Germany are playing Georgia while the other two play each other. Germany through with whoever wins the other match. The only way Germany could get knocked into the playoffs is if the other match goes to a draw while Georgia start firing in the goals. Probably not going to happen. Group E England and Switzerland are through. Between Estonia and Slovenia for the playoff place. Technically. However Slovenia are 3 points ahead, and are playing San Marino, while Estonia have to take on Switzerland. Not really much room for an upset here. Group F Northern Ireland through. Between Romania and Hungary for the next one. They play the Faroes and Greece respectively so Hungary have to hope the Faroes can cause a shock. If they don't end up the best 3rd-placed team that is. Group G Austria through. Russia will be through if they get a point against Montenegro, otherwise Sweden could win and steal that place instead as they play sixth-placed Moldova. Group H Italy through. Norway are in second with Croatia in third, but Norway play Italy while Croatia have the luxury of playing Malta. So it could easily end up the other way. Group I Portugal are through. In second, Denmark have finished all their matches and so are on a disadvantage against Albania, who will qualify directly if they beat Armenia. The best-third placed team looks likely to go to Hungary, especially if Greece continue being abysmal and lose to them. The third place in Group C is another possibility. So, already qualified: France, England, Czech Republic, Iceland, Austria, Northern Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Wales My guesses at who's likely to join them automatically: Slovakia, Germany, Poland, Romania, Russia, Croatia, Albania, Hungary Potential playoffs line-up then of: Turkey, Bosnia, Ukraine, Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark Too many Scandis that will probably go out in the playoffs :(
October 11, 20159 yr Author Thank you very much for doing that, Iz. It would be nice if Norway can draw against Italy or even beat them and qualify although it looks very likely it will be Croatia. :(
October 11, 20159 yr Author Albania are 2-0 up against Armenia and looking strong to qualify for their first ever major tournament. And Northern Ireland are 1-0 up against Finland thanks to a Craig Cathcart goal.
