:hi: all and welcome to the thread where I will review every single top 40 hit of 2008. I will aim to start later tonight and it will be great to see some discussion about what you like/don't like and what you're expecting i'll like.

A few things first though:

1. The song had to debut in the top 40 so stuff like songs which let's say peaked at #65 in 2008 and #5 in 2009 will not be counted

2. Likewise songs that are in the top 40 but were not released in 2008 will not be counted- e.g. Bleeding Love and other 2007 big hits

3. As I am doing all top 40 singles instead of just top 10 singles there will probably be a few I don't recognize at all so I will probably not review them :)

I hope to get this started later and I hope you enjoy

BASSHUNTER- NOW YOU'RE GONE

http://images.digitalspy.co.uk/08/02/150x150_Basshunter_nowyourgone_artwork.jpg

So kicking off my review's of 2008 is one of the biggest hits of the year in the form of dance anthem Now You're Gone by Basshunter. This is definitely one of my favourite song ever and remains such a tune. The vocals are quite nice but the beat is amazing and was such a fun one to dance to at school discos and parties. The song is so loveable and danceable and was an absolutely amazing debut from Basshunter. I remember hearing this a lot at the time due to it being on the music channels a lot and also because my sister was a gigantic basshunter stan for a year and played it all the time.

Nowadays it still sounds great but maybe not as good as it used to be

BRITNEY SPEARS- PIECE OF ME

http://a2.mzstatic.com/us/r30/Music/v4/24/92/88/249288f9-99f0-eee7-3644-3acdf91d4f49/cover170x170.jpeg

I was shocked to see this appear as I always thought this iconic hit was 2007. Anyway Piece Of Me is an absolutely amazing Britney classic for me which is nearly up their with her holy trinity of toxic/baby one more time and a 2008 song set to appear later on in this thread. One of the best parts of Piece Of Me are the absolutely amazing lyrics and I love the subject of the song which is really interesting and Britney's amazing lyrics makes it even more compelling. Britney's vocals are great as usual and the production is perfect and is such a jam. I would have loved to have seen this be a #1 single as it is amazing and this was the highlight from an amazing blackout era for me

MIKA- RELAX TAKE IT EASY/ LUPE FIASCO- SUPERSTAR

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/tr/8/8e/Superstar-lupefiasco.jpg

I don't know Conquest by the White Stripes so not reviewing it :)

I have combined these 2 songs together as 1 I don't remember too well and the other one is beyond awful

One of Mika's smallest hits Relax Take It Easy made a minor splash at the beginning of 2008 and I don't really remember it though it was a quite song if I remember. However Mika has some absolute gems in his discography from that era such as the amazing Grace Kelly and the beautiful Happy Ending and the fun Lollipop. Eeew superstar on the other hand. That felt like it was around everywhere on release and was a beyond absolutely terrible song with awful vocals and just being an absolutely terrible track. I am glad it doesn't seem to be remembered too well nowadays as it was so awful.

KANYE WEST- HOMECOMING/ ROBYN- BE MINE/ KELLY ROWLAND- WORK

http://www.popjustice.com/images/stories/sotd/bemine.jpg

I Fought The Lloyds by Oystar is not being included as I don't even know the artist yet alone the song. Same goes for Waving Flags by British Sea Power. And I couldn't tell you how Moving To New York- The Wombats sounds either or quite a few others- gosh never heard of some of these in my life :o

Another combined post though I actually like most of these songs- just don't have much to say about them. Homecoming was a better Kanye effort but not one of his bet if I remember correctly- also it is another song I thought was a 2007 song. Buzzjack's favourite Robyn makes her first appearance in this thread with the ok if nothing special be mine which is definitely one of my least favourite Robyn songs and pales in comparisons to the likes of with every heartbeat and dancing on my own. Last off is the 2nd most relevant member of Destiny's Child- Kelly Rowland. Though going a bit off topic, Michelle Williams from Destiny's Child released the song We Break The Dawn in 2008. It will not be included in this thread as it failed to make the top 40 I believe but I need to give it a mention as it was such an amazing fantastic track and was definitely one of my favourites of 2008- it really deserved to smash :( . Anyway back to Kelly and like Robyn, Work is a good song but pales in comparison to some of her other stuff.

ADELE- CHASING PAVEMENTS

http://991.com/gallery_180x180/Adele-Chasing-Pavements-423720-991.jpg

What happened to this artist- she seemed to disappear after this 1st era. Anyway on a serious note Chasing Pavements was the beginning of the start of Adele's long reign at the top of the charts. Tbh I actually hated the 1st era back in 2008 apart from this before I started loving it a couple of years later. Chasing Pavements however was always a great song and I remember seeing the video quite a big on the music channels and really enjoying it. I love the lyrics and Adele's vocals are amazing- especially the chorus which is beyond fantastic. However Adele hit way bigger and better heights with the 2nd era with excellent 11/10 songs such as Rolling In The Deep, Someone Like You, Rumour Has It and Set Fire To The Rain. Chasing Pavements was a great introduction and definitely one of the better songs of 2008

RATING: 9.5/10

Oh god, I'm already enjoying 2008 more than I thought I would! This was a great time in my life so all of these songs hold a special place. Not keen on the Britney track, and I can take or leave Basshunter (though I was obsessed at the time).

I used to love that Basshunter track but its quite horrible to listen to now.

I quite like that Britney song. It's the only one of hers I like.

I do love that Lupe Fiasco song though.

I'm suprised you don't remember what 'Moving To New York' goes like. I heard that everywhere at the time.

Hopefully we will agree on more later  You only like one Britney song :o :o

I don't recognise moving to New York by title but I have a feeling it would be one of those songs I'd recognise when I hear it :)

More upcoming now

DAVID JORDAN- SUN GOES DOWN/ JAY SEAN- RIDE IT/ MARY J BLIGE- JUST FINE/ BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE- SCREAM AIM FIRE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/31/SunGoesDown.jpg/220px-SunGoesDown.jpg

A quadruple post this time as I either hate or don't remember any of these releases which all came out on the same week. Let's start off at the best as Mary J Blige released another good yet unspectacular song with Just Fine. I like a lot of Mary J Blige's music but she is one of those artists where I don't really love anything in particular by her. Sun Goes Down was quite a bit hit if I remember correctly but I barely knows how it goes apart from the verse which is ok- I only remember the verse as we had to sing it in primary school as part of a 2008 megamix. I always used to think then sun goes down was by empire of the sun. Jay Sean and Bullet For My Valentine both respectively inflicted another horror upon us with two awful songs- just like all of BFMV discography and all of Jay Sean's discography bar the quite good nowadays Down.

HOT CHIP- READY FOR THE FLOOR / ONE NIGHT ONLY- JUST FOR TONIGHT/ ADELE- HOMETOWN GLORY

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/06/Ready_for_the_floor_cover.jpg/220px-Ready_for_the_floor_cover.jpg

Gosh early 2008 was really a lot more unspectacular than I remember :( Anyway two of these 3 songs recently appeared on the BBCR1 one hit wonders countdown- one surprisingly and one unsurprisingly. Let's start off with the unsurprising one which is crappy boyband One Night Only with quite crappy but bearable track just for tonight as one night only became one hit only as who knows if they released anything else. I really like Hot Chip and was shocked to find out last week that they were a one hit wonder as they only had 1 top 20 :o Anyway Ready For The Floor remains an excellent track and fully deserving of it's top 10 status. Last off is that lady Adele again with Hometown Glory which I was expecting to review a lot later on but it charted for a few weeks in January/February before smashing that top 20 impact in August. Anyway Hometown Glory is definitely one of the standouts from 19 and is a beautiful emotional track which Adele provides beautiful vocals for- I am glad it did very well in the end.

FEELING- I THOUGHT IT WAS OVER

GOLDFRAPP- A&E

TIMBERLAND/KERI HILSON/NICOLE SCHERZINGER- SCREAM

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7c/Aeukcd2front.jpg/220px-Aeukcd2front.jpg

Going off topic a bit again- the absolutely amazing stunning rockferry peaked at 45 this week.

The biggest new entry this week was also the worst by far in the form of the utterly unlistenable awful painful I thought it was over by the feeling who gladly I can't name you another song they song bar this horror. However it somehow became a quite big hit which was a shame as they had no feeling for my ears as I thought it was over for my hearing [absolutely disastrous joke #1 completed- bit like this song]. Goldfrapp always make quite good music and A&E was another good record by them and Timberland teamed up with Keri who hit big in 2009 but disappeared Hilson and The Pussycat Dolls Nicole Scherzinger for an average effort from all of them in the forgettable scream. Anyway really hoping some of my favourite 2008 songs are upcoming as I know there are a few I love coming up soon which will get a bigger separate review :)

DUFFY- MERCY

http://cdn.pianosheetmusiconline.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Mercy-Duffy.jpg

Now this was the main song I was waiting for as we hit a massive upturn for probably the last song tonight  As some of you know- I stanned for Duffy heavily and that Mercy is one of my favourite songs ever and this song is literally everything. Mercy is in my favourite 10 songs ever- possibly even top 5 and is the lead single from Rockferry which is also one of my favourite albums ever. On the topic of Rockferry some of my non single highlights include the beautiful Distant Dreamer, Rockferry and Syrup And Honey which are all 11/10 tracks. Duffy was gigantic in 2008 and seemed like she was going to be one of the biggest artists around but however she released some tripe called Endlessly [though leaded by a very good lead single in hindsight in the form of well, well, well] and has unfortunately disappeared from the music scene as her 2008 rival has turned into one of the biggest worldwide successes.

Anyway back on topic I absolutely adore the biggest selling single when forgetting X-Factor 2008 existed and I rooted for this so badly at the time. It was so amazing seeing it spend 5 well deserved weeks at the top and a long time in the charts for an amazing track  The start of Mercy already gets me in love with the track with the banging beat and the euphoric and iconic Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love Duffy's vocals on this track and her voice is so beautiful on this. The lyrics are amazing even if I did the song wrong a lot when I was younger [i never sang release me but don't remember what I sang instead]. The production is pitch perfect and that I'm begging you for Mercy part before the last chorus is beyond amazing and is one of the strongest parts of the track. I love the video as well as it is simple yet works perfectly and I remember blasting this through all of 2008 with some other tracks to come up later and eating ice-lollys with friends while singing and dancing along to this iconic track. I also own this on physical CD and expect a lot more Duffy stanning later with 2 beautiful classics and another amazing track from her in 2008.

Mercy is my favourite song of 2008 so it gets the 11/10 rating as it is beyond amazing and probably the song that got me into music

Hometown Glory is in my top five from 19 so I'm glad you also like this one too! Cold Shoulder > Right As Rain > Hometown Glory > My Same > Chasing Pavements!

The Feeling shade? :o I can't bear to see such hatred :( (of course you're opinion as I'm joking there) I guess ITIWO wasn't that liked in comparison to their other stuff but 'Never Be Lonely', 'Fill My Little World' & 'I Love It When You Call' were all magnificent. The first two were in my top 40 songs of the last decade. Admittedly I thought it was over spent 6 weeks at #1 on my chart at the time so sad to see you not like it or them for that matter as they usually made such feel good happy music, hsving said that the guys voice I can understand as he's not the best singer is he lol.

ADELE praise on the other hand  really want new music from her asap feels like she's gone for 10 years now lmao.

H20 Ft Platnum- What's It Gonna Be

OneRepublic- Stop And Stare

Paramore- Misery Business

Flo Rida- Low

http://a5.mzstatic.com/us/r30/Music/v4/d7/01/21/d70121bb-2259-b1c9-d3c7-f76e926bf493/cover170x170.jpeg

Dance music was beyond amazing in 2008 and one of my favourite dance tunes from the year comes from the #2 peaking chav anthem smash one hit wonders H20 and Platnum with what's it gonna be. It is such a danceable tune and I love the vocals and the dance beat- it is so easy to put it on repeat and not get bored of it. One Republic released another song like all of their songs as it is quite good but nothing better than that. I remember always hearing stop and stare on the music channels and it is a pretty nice song albeit quite boring as it lacks something and is a bit too MOR though it is bearable. Misery Business is one of the better Paramore tracks [though nothing compares to the masterpiece of still into you] and is a good song and I used to hate low so badly but nowadays it is quite fun and bearable. Also quick mention for something good by Utah saints which I really liked at the time but don't remember how it goes at all nowadays so not reviewing it properly :P More later

H20 FT PLATNUM RATING: 9/10

ONE REPUBLIC RATING: 5/10

PARAMORE RATING: 6.5/10

FLO RIDA RATING: 3.5/10
