I'll be worried in a couple of weeks if it's still doing as 'bad' as it is now but as it stands 24 hours after release and with next to nothing in terms of airplay and promo, it's doing alright! 2010-2012 was probably her peak in terms of releasing a single on the Wednesday and still getting the number 1 come Sunday.

I am not worried about this just yet. It has had such a muted release, mainly due to Tidal i'd say. I don't think even in a few weeks it will be a huge smash from her though (as much as i'd like it too), but it should do decently in the long run and hopefully set up the album release nicely.

I would love her to channel this sound throughout the album, this powerful-yet-vulnerable sound is what Rihanna does best for me (see also: 'Rehab'). Still can't get enough

Oh don't get me wrong, I am not writing it off, I just expected a bit more top 10 position with the Navy
First time hearing 'American Oxygen' and I do really like it. I agree what others have said though. This era leaves a lot to be desired - I don't mind Kanye as an artist but it seems too much Kanye influence isn't necessarily a good thing. Fair play to Rihanna for being a bit more 'experimental' this era but the songs need more substance IMO.

Next tuesday is its add date on pop!

Hot/Modern AC on monday!

Oops I love this #hotmess now, but I also loved Applause - it will be lucky to be half as popular as Applause was though tbf.

'Applause' wishes it was as successful as 'Four Five Seconds'...

(but I don't get the comparisons)

Applause was more successful than 45S and that had a combo of THREE famous people following a better-received era too.

I see Kathryn lurking. Ready for ha essay on why Applause was the saviour of Pop music during 2013.

(Anyway Applause was a song tailored for pop radio, FFS wasn't yet it did a lot better than Applause worldwide)

Edit: A tad disappointed :(

Total: 23w Sales: 2,580,000

Applause's US success sparing me the essay I almost went through with. FourFiveSeconds can only aspire, applaud and look up to those sales, let alone those 500 weeks in the top 10

OMG PREACH!!!

45S is begging and pawin at Applause's piece over those sales and those are the SINGLES - now imagine the difference in ALBUMS!!

Applause is one of the most phenomenal pop hits of our generation. It spurred the unforgettable Roar vs. Applause rivalry, a pop girl rivalry that has yet to happen again. It made artistry a talking point in pop culture, it is basically textbook lesson on the aforementioned. The David Bowie influence and 80s revival, it stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the MOR generica on radio in 013, an achievement in itself

Applause may have underperformed in the UK, but it went top 10 in almost every country on our planet and #1 in many of these. It was MASSIVE in the US, the biggest music market in the world, going against the negative publicity of its rivalry with 'Roar' and Gaga's GP decay of the BTW era. It was a CHART SAVIOUR and blessed be ha name!

If this is not tongue in cheek you are delusional.

I'm not one to compare such different songs but as you wish

FourFiveSeconds

54-15-06-04-06-05-05-05-05-08-09-13

Not too shabby for a song like that if I may say so.

But can we talk about how Applause sold 4 million+ worldwide, while Rihanna is already on 3.15 million and that hasn't even finished its chartrun yet?

And can we talk about how FFS outsold Applause in Australia (2x platinum vs. 1x platinum), Canada (nearly 3x platinum vs. 2x platinum), The UK (about twice as much), Switzerland and New Zealand (twice as much),as well as selling about as much in Denmark, Italy and Sweden ALREADY? Gagz only outsold Rih in Japan, South Korea and the US so far.

And how FFS managed to outpeak Applause in 24 of the territories it has managed to chart in? Applause only charted higher in Wallonia, Poland, Lebanon, Japan and Spain, whilst tieing in the US.

Applause only charted in Mexico, South Korea, Venezuela, Israel, Ecuador and Brazil while FourFiveSeconds didn't.

Please tell me again how Applause is the more succesful song, besides saleswise, given FourFiveSeconds has yet to die down

OMG THIS!!!

45S has THREE huge superstars and is stalling across the charts following no.1 smashes like Diamonds and good publicity. She is also just following the Kanye shitty crowd. Meanwhile GaGA came to save us from SCREEEECH!!! dross and other wannabe Adele clones which clogged the charts like diseased arteries of a screeching banshee. It was different. It was amazing. It barely even had a VIDEO!! It was rush-released. It had negative publicity and yet it was STILL one of 2 of the most talked aboot songs of the year, all over radio, and dividing opinion.

45S however went without note and won't be talked aboot in a month or 2.

I'm not feeling FFS, BBHMM or American Oxygen AT ALL and this comparison with Applause is SACRILEGIOUS tbh!

Guys, this is the Rihanna forum. Loon down a bit, pressed Gags fans.

Besides, FourFiveSeconds is more sonically interesting and innovative for me (read: better) than anything Gaga has ever done musically. That's my actual opinion. And American Oxygen is better than ~most~, to stay relevant to the topic.

oh and if we're talking chart performance I only refer to the UK where I seem to remember Applause being pretty flash-in-the-pan compared to the slaying chart run our Barbadian goddess has recently blessed us with with her lead single, but really, who gives a crap about that anyway as long as you're enjoying the music, and I am from R8 so far.

UK:

05-09-07-08-10-15-19-26-28-41-50-36-42-51-67-75-xx-75-73-xx [Applause]

05-04-05-05-05-03-05-03-04-06-09... [FourFiveSeconds]

That's just for the sake of interest because I actually do prefer 'Applause'!

To be more on topic, I've finally got around to hearing 'American Oxygen'. It's beautiful! Need to listen to it more to be firm about this, but I can easily see it becoming my favourite of the 3 singles quite quickly.
