Only CD sales, without downloads and streaming.

Amarillo was no.1 the week downloads got included into the chart so I can't think where you get that from. What is dishonest about paying for a download anyway?

Most "Amarillo" sales were physical or I am wrong ?

Can you name me the current prices for digital songs and a singles prices from past (for simple from 90s and/or from 00s) in UK ?

For simple in Russia current prices : 1 song - 0,2 - 0,3 euro; it's much cheaper than a price of physical singles in late 90s and early 00s (minimum 1 euro - per song, 2-4 euro for single with B-side and/or non-album tracks)

It's normal to pay for a download, but it's not honest to compare downloads with old physical sales.

If we are going to go there, "the unfairness" goes deeper than the price of the download... it's more of a case of availability actually. Most songs are available for purchase even now, that wasn't the case with physical singles.

Were there any X Factor winners that sold more than 1 million physicals?

65 (38) QUEEN (2,823,000) 1984 2.3741

BEST SELLING YEAR: 1991

Perhaps more revered post Mercury’s death than before, 1991 was of course the year that the former frontman died and gave the group its highest sales tally. However back in 1984 the group were experiencing something of a resurge in popularity after some years in the chart wilderness (almost), the album “The Works” generating 4 top 20 singles including classics “Radio Gaga” and “I Want To Break Free”.

Atomic Kitten who were brought back from the precipice of being dropped by their label when Andy McCluskey (of OMD fame) penned “Whole Again” for them, further concern was warranted when Kerry Katona (by far the star of the group at that point) left to have a baby with Westlife’s Brian McFadden. The group replaced Katona with Kerry Frost re-recorded the track and released “Whole Again” to spend 4 weeks at No 1 and by the end of the year they were the biggest girl group in the land.

Back to the year that Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart broke through with the classic “Sweet Dreams” (which went all the way in the US though it stopped at No 2 here), the band accrued four top 10 hits during the year as well as two high selling albums. Noted for their strong visual imagery the group became one of the most consistent hit making acts of the decade even if they never bettered this performance.

I don't know for a fact but I imagine Shayne Ward is certainly there or thereabouts.

62 (120) SPANDAU BALLET (1,907,000) 1983 2.3955

New Romantics turned 80s soul band Spandau Ballet hooked up with Producers Jolly & Swain to give them a new sound which turned the band into international stars with the title track to the album “True” which even went top 5 in the US. It was written about Kemp’s crush on former Altered Images front woman Clare Grogan and was followed by the single “Gold” which naturally gets an airing at countless sporting events since.

Selling a cool 1.7M singles during the year the Vengaboys were second only to Britney Spears and could boast two chart toppers in the form of “We’re Going To Ibiza” and “Boom Boom Boom Boom”. In reality the group were little more than a front for Dutch producers Danski and Delmundo to make their own brand of europop that was, for 12 months anyway, wildly popular.

Something strange happened in 1994, for the only time during their rivalry East 17 turned the tables on arch rivals Take That selling more singles and albums than their Mancunian counterparts. This was the year that the east end bad boys scored their only No 1 in some style grabbing the festive top spot with “Stay Another Day” along with two other top 10 hits and parent album “Steam” shifting almost double platinum.

Arriving with the 950,000 selling “C’est La Vie” was indication these Irish girls meant business in the world of girl groups, underlined by follow up “Rollercoaster” which repeated the peak if not the sales of their debut. Their first album surprised some by making No 3 and shifting half a million and the stage was set for a Christmas hit and what d’you know “To You I Belong” sneaked a week at No 1 before the Spice Girls arrived for the big day.

They were so much more than “Come On Eileen” but let’s be honest it’s that single that is largely responsible for this placing, that track sold over a million in the year. They were lead by charismatic frontman Kevin Rowland who was always good for an opinion to the newspaper and of course were also made famous by a TOTP gaff when a picture of Jocky Wilson (darts player) was used as a back drop when they performed their version of “Jackie Wilson said” though some suggest this was a deliberate ploy!

After the demise of Bros, NKOTB were very much the next big thing until the emergence of Take That, they had a fantastic 1990 during which they scored 8 top 10 hits drawing level with Madonna for most top 10 singles in a year. A world tour plus two healthy selling albums saw them sell over a million in both singles and albums during the year before the bubble burst.
