At #13 is "Only Your Love" released in June 1990, making this their first for that decade and marks an end of their long stand standing collaboration with SAW, and there fore went into a new and exciting direction with record producer Youth. The song itself samples "Loaded" by Primal Scream and "Fool's Gold" by the Stone Roses and received great reviews, and was the lead single to be taken from their 5th studio album (and first with new member Jackie). But sadly the song wasn't as successful as hoped reaching #27 on the UK charts and fared no better elsewhere, becoming their last single of the 90's to chart in Australia at #51 and last to chart in New Zealand at #49. But despite that this does make this one of their most interesting sounding songs and it does hold up very well today.

At #11 and just lingering outside the top 10 is "Na, Na Hey, Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)" another one of many Bananarama covers, released in February 1983 and taken as the 5th and final single from their debut album "Deep Sea Skiving". The song itself has been covered many times throughout the years and was originally by band Steam in 1969. After the disappointment of their last single "Cheers Then" which only managed a #45 peak, this put them back with a bang into charts with a #5 peak, becoming their 4th top 5 hit and did well in other countries by reaching #4 in Ireland and hit top 40 in Australia, New Zealand and Belgium. In the USA it was successful on the dance charts, but failed to crack the top 100, peaking at #101. Their debut album was released just before this and became a success by reaching #7 on the UK charts.

Now kicking off our top 10 is the last of their debut album era singles to feature here, is the most successful out of the bunch "Shy Boy" , released in June 1982 as the 3rd single from their debut album and 4th single overall and became their 3rd top 5 hit in a row by reaching #4 on the UK charts and becoming the album's most successful and biggest selling single. It was written by Steve Jolley and Tony Swain and marked the first of many studio collaborations between them and the girls. The song was rumoured to be about pirate comedian Mark Gould, whom Bananarama demanded as their Christmas present in 1983. The song was also originally titled "Big Red Motorcycle", but the girls hated the lyrics and had them changed to "Shy Boy". The music video was directed by members of the 80's group Ultravox and the nerdy guy was played by Terry Sharpe who was Sara's boyfriend at the time. It became a success worldwide by becoming their breakthrough in Australia by peaking at #2 and hit top 10 in New Zealand, Belgium, Ireland, France and Canada. In the USA it became their first single to chart by peaking at #83.

At #9 is another last of an album era, "Preacher Man" released in December 1990 as the 2nd single from their 5th album "Pop Life" and was given a remix by Shep Pettibone who's worked with many big names such as Madonna, David Bowie, Diana Ross and the list goes on. Originally "Tripping On Your Love" was slated as the 2nd single and promo copies were sent to radio stations, but Sara contracted meningitis and it got delayed several months, and afterwards London Records decided that "Preacher Man" was a better choice and "TOYL" got pushed to the fourth release, which proved to be a better move as this became the most successful single from the album by reaching the UK top 20, the only single from the album to make the top 20 and was their last top 20 hit for 15 years. It didn't fare so well worldwide apart from Ireland where it reached #11, and top 40 in Belgium, and top 50 in Germany, but didn't chart in Australia. But you know what, I just love this song and along with it's strange and wacky music video, it's just a treat and definitely ranks as one of their all time best.

At #8 is the last of the Jacquie O'Sullivan era to feature here and funnily enough it was also the first to feature her arrival. The fabulous "I Want You Back", released in April 1988 as the 4th and final single from their 4th album "Wow", originally recorded with previous member Siobhan and was originally titled "Reason For Living", but they didn't like the chorus, so they revised and rewrote it as "I Want You Back", however elements of the original recording can be heard on the album version. This was their first release without Siobhan and has become one of their biggest hits by reaching #5 on the UK charts, becoming the album's 2nd most successful single and became successful in other countries, in Australia it was released as the 3rd single, "I Can't Help It" was pushed to 4th over there for some reason and became a big hit by reaching #3 and also made top 10 in New Zealand, Spain and Ireland, as well as top 40 in Germany and Netherlands. It wasn't given a USA release and several years later Keren stated in an interview that she doesn't like this song and wouldn't care if she never heard it again.

At #7 is the last of their single from the 90's to feature here and first single as a duo, "Movin' On" released in August 1992 and was the lead single from their 6th album "Please Yourself". After losing another member Jacquie who left the previous year, Bananarama decided to carry on as a duo and London Records sent them back to SAW records after the underwhelming sales of their last album "Pop Life". This was seen as a step back for the girls going back to their pop sound, Pete Waterman and Mike Stock attempted to create an ABBA like sound for their 6th album, but couldn't match their earlier success, and Pete Waterman would later use that idea for the band Steps who had a lot more success with it. Their comeback single was met with a mixed response and peaked at #24 on the UK single charts, and became the most successful single from that album. It also managed top 40 peaks in Belgium and Netherlands and made a small impact on the German charts. This song was covered by Steps on their 2nd album "Steptacular", like they did with the first album which included a cover of "Last Thing On My Mind", but this wasn't released as a single by them.

At #6 is the ever fantastic "Look On The Floor (Hypnotic Tango)", the last of their duo era singles to feature here and so glad that this did so well. Released in November 2005 as the 2nd and final single from their 9th album "Drama" and peaked at #26 on the UK charts, becoming their 25th top 40 hit and last to date. The song contained an interpolation of the 1983 Italian disco song "Hypnotic Tango" by Mine. The album was released just after this and marked their first release in the UK in 12 years, during that time they recorded 2 other albums "Ultra Violet" and "Exotica", neither were released in the UK and only released in select countries worldwide. Worldwide the song was a small success by charting best in Spain at #12 and making small dents in Australia and Ireland. In the USA it wasn't given a proper release but became a surprise dance hit by reaching #2 on the dance charts and was given an Angel City remix and got included on the soundtrack to the Adam Sandler movie "You Don't Mess With The Zohan". There was another single planned from "Drama" and it was gonna be "Lovebite", but got cancelled, before any remixes or promos were made for it.

Kicking off the top 5 with a bang is one of their most famous and well known songs "Robert De Niro's Waiting", released in February 1984 as the 2nd single from their 2nd album "Bananarama", their first single in 10 months and became one of their biggest hits reaching #3 in the UK charts. The song is often thought of to be a tribute about the actor in title, when in actual fact the lyrics cite one of their more serious tones date rape, about a girl who day dreams about her favourite actor, as a way to escape reality. It is also rumoured that Robert De Niro himself arranged a meeting with the girls, after he heard the song on the radio. Worldwide it also performed well by reaching top 10 in Germany (their breakthrough there), Ireland and Swiss and top 40 peaks in Australia, Belgium and Netherlands. In the USA it became their 3rd song to chart on the top 100, making a small dent at #95. In 2001 the girls re-recorded it with a Latin sound for their 8th album "Exotica", which was only released in France.

At #4 is another of their signature tunes "Cruel Summer", released in April 1983 as the first single from their 2nd self titled album "Bananarama", the song marked their first change in direction with a darker lyrical tone which cited the misery of the oppressive heat and wanting to be with someone as the summer went by. It became another success for them in the UK by reaching #8, becoming their 5th top 10 hit, but worldwide it wasn't a success on first release. But in 1984 after it was featured on the smash hit movie "Karate Kid", even though they didn't allow it to be on the soundtrack, the song still became very popular and became their breakthrough hit in the USA by reaching #9 and worldwide it became a success by reaching top 5 in South Africa and France, top 10 in Ireland and top 40 in Germany, New Zealand, Belgium, Australia and Canada. Since then it was remixed several times and in 1989 it was given a New Jack Swing mix and re-released with new member Jacquie and hit the UK charts a 2nd time reaching #19, as well as hitting top 20 in Ireland and charting better in Germany and Swiss than it's first release by making the top 30. It has also been covered many times and most successfully by Ace Of Base in 1998 who took it back to the UK and USA top 10.

Right then now at the #3 spot is their signature tune "Venus", which is a song that has been part of their repertoire since they first got together, the song was originally sung by Shocking Blue in 1969 and was a big hit for them and Bananarama had the idea of turning it into a dance music type song, but their producers didn't like the idea for a while, until they started to work with Stock Aitken and Waterman, in which this marked the first song they did with them, and they didn't think that it would have made a good dance record either. Due to the girls almost finishing the sessions for their third album "True Confessions", this was only added at the last minute, and after the girls heard Dead Or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)", they had an idea of what they wanted the song to sound like and the end result was met with excellent results. Released in May 1986 as the 2nd and lead single from their 3rd album "True Confessions" which got released just after this, the song became their biggest worldwide smash, in the UK it reached #8 surprisingly, (always though that this was #1 for years}, becoming their 7th top 10 hit and hung around the charts for several weeks and ended a slight slump in sales for them, as they're previous 3 hits all missed the top 20. But in the USA it became a #1 smash hit, they're first and only chart topper as well as topping the charts in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Swiss, as well as top 5 peaks in Belgium, Netherlands, Finland, France, Germany, Italy and Norway. Because of this success the girls would work with SAW again for their next album, which was pretty much the obvious way to go and brought them even more success.

At the runner up spot is my personal favourite Bananarama track, the excellent "I Heard A Rumour" released in July 1987 as the lead single from their 4th album "Wow" and became one of their most successful and well known hits. After the success of "Venus", the girls decided on doing an entire album with producers Stock Aitken and Waterman and has been cited by Pete Waterman himself as one of this favourite songs and carried on from the more glamorous image they portrayed in "Venus". In the UK the song climbed to #14 and becoming a big seller, but fared much better in the USA by reaching #4, becoming their 3rd and final top 10 hit there. Elsewhere it managed top 10 peaks in Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and Swiss and top 20 in Netherlands, and finally top 40 in Australia, Belgium and Germany.

So there you have it Buzzjack your favourite Bananarama single is none other than the ever brilliant "Love In The First Degree", released in October 1987 as the 2nd single from their 4th album "Wow" and is another SAW production which saw again massive worldwide success. In the UK it reached #3 holding a three way tie for their highest charting single there along with (Robert De Niro's Waiting and Help) and marks they're biggest selling single. The song was also nominated for a Brit Award where they also performed it live, and makes this they're final live performance with Siobhan before she left the group. The music video is also one of their most iconic as it plays off Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock". This definitely marks the most successful single from that album and worldwide it hit top 10 in Australia, Belgium, Ireland and top 20 peaks in Netherlands, New Zealand, Swiss and Spain. In the USA it was released as the album's third single following "I Can't Help It" and made the top 50. In 2007 the song saw popularity again when it was featured as a mash up with Basement Jaxx's 2005 hit "Oh My Gosh".
