Bortolotti also founded the unsually titled Anticappella.

Two great things about Anticappella

1. They sounded exactly the same as Cappella

2. They had a hit with a song called 2 times the square root of 231

As for Cappella, Helyom Halib, Take Me Away and U Got 2 Know are good records but U Got 2 Let the Music and Move On Baby were not so good.

Culture Beat - Got To Get It

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh141/dirkdesaffel/fi4091475.jpg

Date 7th Nov 1993

3 Weeks

Official Chart Run 7-4-4-5-18-28-46-46-40-37-72 (11 weeks)

*Positions in red are the weeks when the track would be number 1 if just dance music was chart eligible.

Had you forgotten this ever existed? I did.

Upping the BPM to usher in a new wave of Euro dance to the Top 5 that had hitherto been less commercial in the UK, Culture Beat unleashed Got to Get It before Mr Vain had even left the charts.

Not a wild departure from Mr Vain but it did get a bizarrely positive review by Billboard magazine, saying that the song sports a "better chorus and aggressive, synth-soaked beats" that their previous single, "Mr. Vain". The song is a "blend of party-down male rapping and cute female-belting is familiar and fun."

I think we can all agree that it's no Mr Vain.

Culture Beat would be back in the Top 5 in Jan 1994 with Anything, which always felt like a difficult song to ask a DJ to play at a Club.

"Could you play Anything by Culture Beat?". "Sure" and the DJ plays Mr Vain, misunderstanding the request.

Further Top 40 hits came, none of them very memorable. They last charted in 2003 with a remix of Mr Vain.

I think I've broken the record for mentioning a previous hit in any of these commentaries :D

I remember liking Anything but wasn't as fond of this one at the time. Just watched it and the video is so dull, the guy in Culture Beat seems to specialise in just standing about in doorways and corners.

Cappella - U Got 2 Let The Music

Oh the memories! What a brilliant dance track. Actually 90% of the dance music at that time were so so good. I was a huge dance fan at that time.

I need to go to a 90s party pretty soon :kink:

"Inside Out" by Culture Beat is a lost classic.

100% agree with this. Was one of my faves from Culture Beat. Inside Out was such a gem.

I think the problem was with Inside Out that they were already on a downwards spiral at their career?

Got To Get It is a brilliant track, but not their best. Though in '93 I loved it! But I think I pretty much loved everything by Culture Beat  :music:

The Top 10 in the week that Got To Get It went up to 4 was quite dance-tastic but my faves were at the bottom.

10 was The Orb with “Fluffy White Clouds” (which had been around since 1990 but was finally getting a proper release), at 9 was the highest new entry from Urban Cookie Collective with “Feels Like Heaven”, the follow-up to their summer smash.. Time Frequency were up to 8 with “Real Love 93”, Goodmen were at 6 with the (later ripped-off by Simply Red) “Give It Up” and Capella as mentioned earlier in this thread were at 5.

“Got To Get It” smacks of 'will this do?' follow-up syndrome but came at a time when Torsten Fenslau (the founder and producer of the group) was killed in an car crash near to Darmstadt at the age of just 29. :(

I didn't know that track with such title. I only knew Move Your Body and Express Your Freedom.

Cappella's 1996 track "Turn It Up And Down" had a remix by legendary 90's remixer Todd Terry.

The Doobie Brothers - Long Train Runnin' (Sure is Pure Remix)

Date 28th Nov 1993

1 Week

Official Chart Run 10-7-12-20-27-27-30-43-65-74 (10 weeks)

*Positions in red are the weeks when the track would be number 1 if just dance music was chart eligible.

The Doobie Brothers were a highly successful American rock band of the 70s. The band went through a multitude of line ups with various permutations of 3 to 8 members from a pool of nearly 30 people in total, during the life of the band. The mainstays were generally Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and John Hartman who formed the band.

Although, quite dormant during the 1980s on the album front the band's profile was raised significantly in 1993 by a release of a comprehensive compilations Listen to the Music: The Very Best of The Doobie Brothers which eclipsed the previous two best ofs that the band had released - Best of the Doobies, 1976 and Best of the Doobies - Volume II, 1981.

To aid in this a Sure is Pure mix of Long Train Runnin' was commissioned as it was felt that the central guitar riff of Long Train Runnin' lent itself to a disco interpretation.

Sure is Pure were Danny Spencer and Kelvin Andrews and 1993 had already seen an array of Sister Sledge singles successfully remixed by the boys, who had gained a reputation as re-mixers of soulful dance releases both contemporary (Bizarre Inc's I'm Gonna Get You) and classic (Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive). Their magic worked again and Long Train Runnin' managed a week as the best selling dance track in the UK.

The Doobies would chart once more at number 37 with a re-release of Listen to the Music in 1994. Sure is Pure would continue to provide remixes for an eclectic range of artists from INXS to Saint Etienne to Mary J Blige.

I have Helyom Halib on 7".

Hey, that used to be my catchphrase!

Really didn't like Culture Beat at all...and, yes, I can't remember any of the follow ups to Mr Vain.

Liked the joke about asking the DJ for Anything though :D

I have no recollection of the Doobie Brothers remix(!) I remember the Soul Asylum track that was out at the same time called “Runaway Train” with its poignant video.

I think at the time I was obsessing with the first ever eponymous #1 ... oh dear : (

M People - Don't Look Any Further

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c32/tonyttt31/M_People_Dont_Look_Any_Further.jpg

Date 5th Dec 1993

4 Weeks

Official Chart Run 9-11-12-14-19-17-27-44-52-70 (10 weeks)

*Positions in red are the weeks when the track would be number 1 if just dance music was chart eligible.

At this point I had really had enough of M People so I was quite surprised that I didn't despise this song. It became obvious why this was so. It turned out that it wasn't written by them. It was a cover version.

The original was a hit in 1984 and was by Dennis Edwards, the lead singer from the Temptations who was joined by Siedah Garrett to compliment his soulful vocals . Swapping roles in this version, Heather Small took lead vocals and Mark Bell sang Siedah's parts.

This was the third single from its parent album, Elegant Slumming and wouldn't be the last. This is however the last time we'll be hearing from M People in this rundown as they would be outsold at every turn by a bigger dance single.

They would hit the Top 10 six more times and the Top 20 another handful. They finished up their chart career around the end of the decade with Heather embarking on a modest solo career in the noughties, of which she was very Proud.
